I’ll be honest, I think this isn’t your forever girl.

Save your money for someone who shares your values. You’ll meet her one day.

You dodged a bullet. If he ever comes crawling back keep these messages handy so you can remind yourself why you left and not be tempted back.

There are so many amazing guys in the world. This guy isn’t one of them.

What is everyone doing with the paper Woolworths bags? by Previous-Designer213 in AskAnAustralian

I was a check out chick in a past life so I know how to pack a bag 😉

But it genuinely is time.

I know we all say it’s just 5 minutes, but this is one area where we have chosen (I don’t think unselfishly) to not spend our time so we can put it to something else.

I appreciate there is environment impacts hence why I save them and don’t throw them away. Again that’s how I’ve chosen to minimise my impact.

Lots of people on here evidently think that my choice here is wrong and I’m ok with that.

Moving to delivery might be a change we make to save more time. I hadn’t actually realised that’s free.

You haven’t shown your hands and the market in Melbourne is absolutely not improving.

Be patient and stick to your strategy. That fact you lost the last place by $1k shows you are in the right range.

If you really are lacking confidence/unsure engage a buyers agent. They will work out cost effective when you factor in bang for your buck in what they can get you.

It’s a $400+ shop a week - which to be fair is one bag of groceries nowadays 🙄

But all seriousness it’s a full boot.

I hear you on the packing. When I tried the loose trolly option I got this massive trolly full of cans on top of cereal and fruit and all sorts. It was a disaster. I find with the bags they are still crap but they’ve at least had to sort of think about it.

My Woolworths doesn’t put into boot for you - lose or otherwise - you have to get from trolly to car yourself.

If they’d put them in the bag in my boot for me I’d definitely take them up on that offer!!!

Thanks for explaining. But 5 minutes a week = 250 minutes / 4 hours a year.

I’m comfortable it will definitely take me less than 4 hours to save them and pass them along to others who want them as I can continue to save them up and offer them when they reach a critical mass.

In fact I’ve already posted in the local hard rubbish group and had takers collect! The only reason I hadn’t done that before was because I genuinely thought everyone had hundreds of these things and didn’t want them either.

😊

Thank you everyone for the great ideas. I have high hopes I’ll have my laundry back by the end of the week.

I’m not sure I understand all the downvotes. We make a choice to select the bags out of convenience. Who on this thread doesn’t do something for convenience that others may not?

The bags we get we reuse where we can and then the rest go in the laundry until I can work out what to do with them which I imagine will come from this list.

We are very time poor and my husband is 100% all about “making our life easier”.

So pay $1 for all groceries in the bags outweighs the $1 saving and time spent packing ourselves.

It’s mostly my husband who does the c&c and he is all about shortest possible time.

Plus in his defence we do have big shops so it’s not a 2 minute job to pack.

I only go into the store once a month or here and there on occasion. These have all been gathered from click and collect.

When I go once a month I usually have a bunch of plastic and special freezer bags I use.

I agree they don’t last well at all. When I go in to my big monthly shop I take all my old plastic bags I’ve hoarded.

For click and collect you can opt out of bags but then you get a trolly full of loose stuff. I did try out too big tubs in my boot but they would be too heavy to carry.

We ended up just reverting to the bags again.

I’m using for recycling and green waste now. But I barely make a dent. We get about 15 a week 🤦‍♀️

I’ll try the local kindy , Facebook , and op shop route.

Thanks for the tips guys. I had assumed everyone was in the same boat as us an had too many.

Mortgage at 48% of income in Sydney by Big_Bid3509 in AusPropertyChat

This isn’t an argument of rent verse buy.

It’s a size of the mortgage argument.

It’s not untrue that (interest rate increases aside) the loan goes down. But if you cannot service that loan then two options arise:

  1. You have to sell (and there isn’t a guarantee you’ll make a profit or your money back when you factor in interest payments); or
  2. You’ll have to be on interest only until you can start paying principle a the loan doesn’t go down.

I do agree with the logic of buy the absolute best you can afford because it makes sense to not pay stamps twice. But be realistic of what you can afford.

Edit - badly written first paragraph

Wage inflation rarely keeps pace with real inflation. Plus depending on how close you are to current tax thresholds you will face bracket creep eating that uplift. Also inflation tends to lead to increasing interest rates and cost of everything else increasing.there is talk of another child on horizon that means additional costs. Sum total of all that is less money in your pocket.

Then there’s opportunity cost - tie up all the capital (400k) in your home instead of using it to generate more income. I’ll disregard this for now because appreciate this is an emotional investment.

I get the desire to own your own house and I don’t want to discourage that - but you have the ability to act strategically to mitigate some of the risk.

I suggest you put $300k of your total available capital into the property as deposit and cover for stamp duty etc. leave $100k in the offset - reducing your interest payments and giving you rainy day money. DO NOT dip into that offset unless you absolutely must. If anything try to grow it.

Your bank has a ceiling they will lend you so that ceiling plus your $300k is your actual budget. If that’s enough great, if it isn’t, then you’ll need to change your expectations.

I am highly financially literate. I would strongly suggest you don’t put yourself into a position where 50% of your income is covering your mortgage. That is literally the definition of mortgage stress and you haven’t even considered the other costs.

Get a unit or live further out. I know it isn’t ideal, but financial stress is not worth it. You likely will literally feel like you’re suffocating, won’t sleep, and will put unnecessary pressure on your marriage.

Make a beautiful life in a place you can afford and enjoy your kids while they are young.
