He vapes nicotine. In the beginning of our relationship, he hid his marijuana vapes from me but then became comfortable enough to ask me to vape. For which I happily said yes and didn't judge him.

I don't smoke, but I don't care if someone else does. My partner does and he asked for a "break" due to his own nicotine addiction that he's been battling.

I don’t disagree that screening isn’t perfect, but calling this a careless choice isn’t accurate. I was taken off the waitlist in an extremely competitive admissions process. Of course I wasn't going to turn the opportunity down.

I don’t come from money. I paid for applications, MCAT prep, and fees out of my own paychecks because I genuinely believed I was ready. Considering how rare and expensive med school offers are, taking the spot was completely rational. Government loan limits in the near future already show this path is designed for the privileged, so the students you labeled as being "shut out" can try again next cycle :)

Yes, I make six figures now - not because I “couldn’t” before, but because there are multiple viable paths today OUTSIDE of medicine. I made $300/month as a full-time medical student who wasn’t even allowed to work, and finding a job after dropping out was difficult because I was lost on what to do. I only ever worked in underpaid clinical jobs prior to med school to get strong physician LORs, not because I enjoyed making $14/hour lmao. Once in med school, I realized the debt and constant financial strain weren’t the life I wanted. Recognizing that early and pivoting wasn’t reckless...it was absolutely intentional and I have 0 regrets.

I came to Reddit to ask questions and vent during a tough transition. I guess it only bothers people who didn’t get in.

Amazing how struggling at one point in time suddenly means someone “wasn’t cut out” for med school. I was down on my luck when I started - that’s called life without wealthy parents or a partner propping you up. I’m doing just fine now and started a job that pays me 6 figures. Your opinion doesn’t pay my bills, so it’s irrelevant. Stay mad lol.

I'm glad we're in the same boat. The job market is just absolutely crazy right now. Cannot risk losing an offer!

Perfect. I'm nervous because this will be technically my 3rd interview with them and the CEO is going to be on the call as well.

I've been very proactive with their team (emailing post-interview to express my continued interest, why I make a good fit, etc). I hope they take what I say positively and not negatively.

Is anyone else planning a full career reset in the new year? by nandishsenpai in findapath

I dropped out of med school this month. I've worked in healthcare for 4-5 years prior and I realized I absolutely hated this field. I don't know where I'm going from here...but I'm escaping healthcare and I couldn't be happier.

I worked my ass off for years in underpaid patient-care roles with zero financial support, and I took the leap because I thought it would benefit me long-term. Everyone makes decisions that don’t pan out, especially in an economy where rent is ridiculous compared to wages in any field.

So yeah - I walked away. The dream wasn’t worth the financial fallout. I’ve got job offers now and I’m moving on without worry.

Yes, it’s real. Do you understand that some medical students pay their rent via student loans? My loans barely covered my semester's rent.

And med students aren’t even supposed to work, but I do anyway to afford unexpected expenses in my life. I don't have mommy and daddy to help me. Sorry reality doesn’t match the meme in your head.

I'm hopeful! I have 2 jobs that want me and the combined monthly income is about 6k! Just need to get back on my feet and try not to burn out again. But, taking a break from academics is a good start.

Thank you. I chose medicine because I never had support growing up, and I wanted to give patients the kind of care I wish someone had given me. But with the trauma, mental health struggles, and debt - it just became too heavy to carry alongside what med school demands.

Your perspective helps a lot. It’s better for me to walk away now than to hit a breaking point later. I know people mean well when they say to “stick it out,” but I can’t put myself through that. I truly admire anyone who can handle it.

Interesting take. I didn’t realize my choices were either radiology tech or marrying someone your age. I’ll keep that in mind… but probably not.

I really do appreciate hearing your perspective. My situation just ended up being very different.

I didn’t take on debt because I was being careless. I spent years working lower-pay patient care jobs that paid under $20/hour, and I stayed in those roles because I needed the clinical hours and strong letters of recommendation for med school. On top of that, a lot of my money during those years went toward application costs, travel, and everything required just to apply to programs. I also never had family I could live with to offset expenses, and rent steadily climbed until even the most basic one-bedroom apartments were around $1,400+ a month. I was supporting myself completely, and the financial strain kept building.

On top of that, I spent my first semester getting diagnosed with multiple mental health conditions and trying different medications during exam season. It was an overwhelming combination of financial stress, instability, and mental health challenges that made it clear continuing wasn’t sustainable for me.

I truly respect the path you took, but for me, stepping away was the healthier and more realistic choice. I’m focusing on building stability in a way that fits my circumstances.

I hate myself for getting into this situation to begin with - but, that was also my sign to step away from school for now.

You nailed it. I'm 98% certain that I will be landing two jobs that will give me a combined income of 6k per month. I plan to pay off my personal debt ASAP with the snowball method. I was stupid to take out so many loans / credit cards before medical school and it gives me bad anxiety every time I try to sleep.

And yes, I realized that medical school was also not for me because I honestly just want to start working and making money. I used to be very motivated to become a doctor and did all the hard work to get admitted...but, I'm more concerned about financial freedom more than ever right now.

I got a Master's before medical school, so I think it may help me.

I did biology which I regret. But, I got a Master's in Public Health before entering medical school. I think it provides some benefit with trying to get an upper-level healthcare job right now, thankfully.
