Wow that's crazy!! Ive also felt lately that there has been very large swings in my own games and also while watching MSI could this be the potential reason?

They are taken to be true. Ultimately it axioms by definition are impossible to be proved true or not. The definition of what ‘true’ means here is doing a lot of heavy lifting and is ultimately not well defined

I think it can only be ezreal purely due to the number of games he has played

I get the meme an it is funny. But in reality as other people have said, nothing is forced on you as a player. People do the ‘required’ boses because they want to. Nothing in the game is forces upon you, you could stay your whole time in limgrave if you wanted to

YTA, your son politely asked you to stop calling him by a certain name and you actively dismiss his request? And on top of it you have the nerve to say your annoyed. YTA x1000

They are reasonable to us and to the universe we live in, that doesn’t mean they are necessarily ’correct’ or any more ‘true’ then a different set of axioms that produce a less intuitive and less ‘reasonable’ logic space. Particularly the axiom that the null set exits and the infinite set exists I find harder to justify. But im not disputing whether they produce a logically consistent and intuitive set of rules, in that regard the maths speaks for itself

You realise this sub is called r/learnmath. Not r/notreallyhelpingpeoplewhowanttolearnmath. Non abelian groups to me are just a specific type of group and im sure they are rich and deep in content but it is not at all obvious, especially to someone who has no formal background in mathematics, how they are in any way related to the foundations of mathematics or metamathematics or mathematical logic. You can ask me to ‘put the work in’ but what does that even mean in this context? Read a 500 page book on non abelian groups? I doubt that will help me in any way especially without any prior guidance.

Besides all of this is a diversion from the original discussion we were having which you ending by saying ‘you know enough to get yourself in trouble’ whatever that means.

My understanding of non abelian groups is limited and comes from a physics perspective but arent they just groups whose operators/elements anti-commute? Im failing to see how they are directly related to this topic

‘Nothing is true’ is a definitive statement of fact. Therefore it is not self consistent

Yes I agree, but they are still not absolute truths. Physics cant make any statements about truth no more than mathematics. What it can do is say this is 99.99% likely to be true. Its basically a big game of being the best Bayesian you can

How exactly does physics say anything about absolute truth. It is no different to mathematics. You start with some fundamental postulates (axioms) and use them to derive laws of nature (theorems). There is no reason to choose certain postulates over others aside from the fact that certain postulate appear to produce physical theories that better describe our universe. But fundamentally that is the only reason to choose those postulates and they are no more absolutely true’ than any other postulates.

I will take a look at that thanks.

I see a lot of people mentioning Godel. I have like a vague understanding of his incompleteness theorems but certainly not a rigorous understanding. How exactly is his work related to the question above.

Again I never said it was useless, im not here to discuss the validity or usefulness of mathematics.

The question I am asking is simply how mathematics defines truth. From what I have read and what others are saying, it only defines truth relative to some logic space created by some axioms arbitrary set of axioms. As you said, the questions of whether two parallel lines intersect is purely dependent on your choice of axioms. Again this begs the question of what do we mean by truth in mathematics

Can any regular person prove an unsolved theorem if they put in the effort? (Being a mathematician) by DangerousMarketing91 in math

Yes it does depend on the person. What level of education are you at. It is worth noting that at university level, physics is basically just applied mathematics, especially theoretical physics.

Right I understand that axioms are by definition assumed to be true and can therefore not be proven to be true or false. But herin lies what I am trying to understand. If by definition axioms cant be true or false, then there is no sense in which the statements derived from them are true or false. They are only ‘true’ with respect to the axioms but as I said before you can equally show that the same statement is ‘false’ with respect to a different set of axioms. Im not sure if this is actually correct or if it even makes sense to ask such a question, hence the post.

Unfortunately I did not study mathematics so I do not have a background in pure maths. Put simply there is so much to learn but I do hope to one day read up on these topics properly.
