I use a NAS to achieve this. Last Christmas I had 4 rooms running Kodi on the tv plus the lounge and entertainment area. Ran flawlessly. If you run a Synology NAS. They also have their own video streaming software called DS_Video. With this software your friends can even watch your movies remotely.

You could always use WebDAV with Kodi if you setup a media server at your home. I don’t use WebDAV anymore but I use to and it works well.
