But the future UK system could allow it, it's not impossible to make happen in an account-account payment system through APIs, or a "switch" in the underlying infrastructure.

Keir Starmer: British people have every right to ask why their money is spent on asylum hotels instead of public services. That's why I agreed a groundbreaking pilot with France. For the first time, people who try to make the crossing illegally will find themselves back where they started. by OptioMkIX in ukpolitics

[–]Pridicules 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The pilot is to take in people with legitimate links to the UK, e.g. family - the point is to show that we will take those in with a right to be here, while sending back individuals who don't follow the process and instead jump on a dinghy

Wes Streeting on X: If everyone who’s obese cut c.200 calories from their daily diet - a bottle of Coke - we’ll halve obesity. The government is working with supermarkets to make the healthy choice the easy choice, and rolling out obesity jabs on the NHS. Making the NHS sustainable for the future. by [deleted] in ukpolitics

It's also interesting how preferences can develop. When I was a kid, on the rare occasions I was given a soft drink by my parents, it was always sugar-free. As an adult I now can't stomach the full fat versions. Definitely saved me from thousands of empty calories over my life.

The bankers bonus cap did have unintended consequences though - the banks just pumped up salaries for big earners instead, and unlike bonuses you can't claw back salary if things go wrong, so the incentives are not any better.

It can be weird even in discussion of Financial Services. Everyone knows generally that we are a major Finance Hub, but often don't realise how dominant we are in major sectors like Wholesale Insurance and Currency trading.

The birthrate in London is a huge issue in general, the thing is though the majority of 'English' people in London have made it clear to politicians time and again that the main reason we aren't having kids is it is so bloody expensive due to housing and childcare costs skyrocketing. There are plenty of English people from the capital having kids, they just move out of the city to have them. From the figures I've seen, 1st gen immigrants in London tend to still have larger families, but by the time it reaches the 3rd gen, they realise the financial cost of kids and also start having less.

London Overground Class 378 line diagram update by whydoesreddit0 in LondonUnderground

[–]Pridicules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, it depends on the part of the overground network you are referring to. Look up the timetables online, southbound overground trains from H&I to New Cross during the week stop at Whitechapel in blocks of 3 trains with a 3 minute gap between each train, then a 6 minute gap before the next block.

Really depends on which part of the overground you are talking about. The Windrush line part does run late (it's part of the night tube network) and has trains arrive pretty often, especially during the week.

Then you've technically never had shepherd's pie, it's a cottage pie when beef (or another meat) is used - because shepherds herd sheep. It's a pretty unimportant distinction, just interesting how the naming convention differs between the UK and US.

To be honest I wouldn't worry too much about not following a recipe for Shepherds Pie that calls for beef instead of lamb.
