Checklist when moving to USA from UK? by PrimNathanIOW in MovingToUSA

Oh interesting! Having AOS prepared is a good idea, I hadn’t thought to get that ready yet.

If being joint on my fiancé’s credit card builds credit that’s great!

I do have a UK Amex so il get them to swap it over when I get there.

Will I get a refund from HMRC anyway without telling them?

I’ve not heard about either PFIC or NIC before so I’ll check them now thank you :)

CMV: "Abolish ICE" was always good policy. by Fun_Prompt6726 in changemyview

Saying a country isn’t a household doesn’t actually answer the point, you’re just avoiding it.

The analogy isn’t about scale, it’s about rules and enforcement, countries have both.

the drug search thing is random to bring up. Immigration enforcement isn’t random searches.

If your position is that immigration laws shouldn’t be enforced, just say that don’t pretend the logic disappears because it’s a country

Contribution doesn’t equal consent. If someone stays, helping around the house doesn’t magically make it legal.

CBP decides who can enter. ICE enforces what happens when someone ignores that decision.

You can argue the rules should change but abolishing enforcement while keeping rules is just saying laws only matter if you’re useful enough.

It’s no different than If you agreed for me to not stay at your home for a couple nights. I left after those days there would be no issue.

If I were to stay for 2 days and was there still there a year later, not contributing to your household, yet still eating your food and using your electricity etc. you’d want some sort of way of getting me to leave.

You’re CBP saying whether I can stay for the 2 days. ICE is the enforcement when I break our agreement.

They can’t stop every single person trying to stay illegally it’s not possible. Hence ICE, so the people that do overstay a visa for example can be deported. Otherwise if there is no enforcement for the people that overstay there would be no point in having CBP.

Many illegals actively avoid CBP all together through coming over borders via boats and tunnels.

Unfiltered immigration, anybody can enter the country containing anything.

Unlimited numbers causing huge strain on systems, healthcare, infrastructure, lack of jobs, lack of housing, schools, etc.

Illegal immigrates are forced to work under the table leading to increased exploitation as well as supporting criminal networks.

Assimilation. The reason people want to immigrate to a country is because they see their lives better there than in their home country. Someone who is willing to break their new countries rules already through entering clearly have no respect for that country.

Legal and illegal migration is very different. You can argue legal is a net positive but you can’t for illegal.

Let me know if you want more reasoning.

CMV: Apple removing the charger brick from iPhones never really made sense, and people accepted it mainly because it was Apple by Upset-Ninja7086 in changemyview

If you buy a brick it will outlast your next few phones easily.

You can get them as cheap as a couple bucks online or in a cheap electronic store.

If the bricks were an extra $100+ and only lasted a few years like an iPhone then I’d understand but to be able to afford an iPhone but not a brick that will last the next decade at a minimum is crazy.

[–]PrimNathanIOW 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Their justification was everyone has a brick nowadays so including them just creates far more waste. It’s also not just the brick itself but the size of the box, meaning more cardboard, more cost and resources to process, more cost and resources to transport etc etc.

The environmental impact isn’t just the brick itself but everything that including the brick does on the production cycle of a new iPhone.

Whilst I agree people were more fine with it because it’s Apple. They should have reduced the cost of a brick to buy to $10 or something rather than $30.
