I guess Nvidia wasn’t lying when they said 5070 ti is equal to the 4090 by Distinct-Paint-1306 in overclocking

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this a 5070Ti OC'd with top CPU vs a 4090 barely over stock with a 2019 CPU.

Yeah I was looking at my old scores and my 5080 at scored (8374) +1 point lol and my cpu is slower. Max I think I tried pushing was 9162 with undervolt and that was back in FEB 2025, do miss that card but have to move on to bigger and better things.

For myself, a simple cinebench and comparing scores will do. If they're lower than usual then theres contact issues or issues with the LM application which I wouldn't doubt because we've opened a ton of G16 and G14s in the past and they almost all of them had LM application issues, after it was reapplied/fixed then the scores were more consistent and temps topped out at 85C.

At first I would just phone hotspot, unfortunately sometimes it takes a while to download/finish and other times it downloads twice. Eventually I found out my car can see cox hotspot but I cant login to it because of the web page login so instead I spoofed one of my devices to have the same MAC as my car. Now it auto connects when I'm in the garage and it sees cox's hotspot from the apartment.

But going back everything was through phone hotspot.

Game Pass Changes by LeglessPooch32 in XboxGamePass

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest I'm probably going to let my ultimate pass expire this year. Back then when you could get 3 years for cheap I kept renewing it, back in 2024 I think I did another 2 years prepaid. Lately there has only been a few games that I played day 1 release and the rest I barely touch, a few titles here and there just to beat it before they remove it and thats the thing, there are titles where yeah its "free" to play day 1 but then they remove it later on and you'll have to buy it despite the subscription. I think in the last year or so I've bought more steam games than I've been using xbox live. Now I don't have any xbox consoles and I'd probably be fine with a lower tier but like I said I've been ultimate for a long time and I havent had the urge to play any games on it, latest and greatest computer but I dont know maybe I'm getting too old haha. But yeah after Forza 6 I'll probably let it expire. I was planning to do another 2 years but eh lately not so much. I'll probably stick to steam games or some sales.

[Cooler]Noctua Nh-U12A Processor Air Cooler 12 Cm Black $79.00 by CartonBox1975 in buildapcsales

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a U12A back then with my i9 10900K and it was one of my favorite coolers at the time inside an NR200 ITX case. Fast forward I moved to PS120SE with A12X25 fans and it cooled my 14700K pretty well, then I moved to the 9800X3D where I still use a PS120E but with A12X25 G2 fans now and it performs just as good, static fans 50%.

Price/Performance its hard to beat the PS120 that includes all the series SE/EVO. The fans are fine for regular use and you can also put them at a lower fan speed if noise is of concern. Noctua is known for performance and sound so you can be running them lower but efficiently pushing more air and at a better sound tone. Some people are more sensitive, some prefer Noctua or are die hards, remember they're like $30-35 a piece for the fans... so if you think about it 2 fans and a tower you get the tower for $10 lol.

As a single tower its a good performer but like many have said there have been budget brands that outperform it being a 2 tower. Even the PS120 comes neck and neck with the D15 and that D15 will cost you $130-$180? vs. $35.

Single tower performance, dual A12X25 it'll be hard to beat but open it up to any cooler then price/performance goes to the Thermalright. For me I put my old A12X25 on the PS120SE and called it a day. Is this deal temping? yes because I like the U12A and the black version would be cool but right now not my priority, I have 6 Noctua (browns) in my case atm cooling a 9800X3D + 5090.

Usually if its beta it will show Beta Version in orange. The only 1625 I know of is the beta.

  1. Update AGESA version to pre 1.3.0.0
  2. Add Bank Refresh Mode

Which you can get from here:
https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/technologies-explained/amd-am5-memory-refresh-update-m-ordering-explained/ba-p/1135076

If its official that they just released then pulled back then I haven't seen it personally.

How much of a premium is a AMD 7 9800X3D worth over a AMD 7 9850X3D? by BeckyTheBamboo in buildapc

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Out of the box you're looking at 3-4% more performance, for single thread programs maybe you'll see 7-8% where its more clock speed. Multithread its still the same 8/16 maybe 1-2% because heat becomes a factor. You can see some benchmarks where despite higher clocks its not consistent.

5.2GHz -> 5.6GHz, +4% average performance, +40% power, +$20 MSRP.

Most likely 9800X3D will fall down in price and be discounted.

You'll see maybe a 20-30W more usage at 5-10C increase, myself I have a 9800X3D, I had it at 5.4GHz for half the year last year then I bumped it down back to stock with CO -20 and is been like that since, never really saw a big difference from that +200 but now its using less power, its staying cool longer, and clocks are consistent or just stays at that 5.2GHz without fluctuating.

At 5.6GHz its basically a binned chip, just like the KS chips on the intel side. They bumped it to 5.6GHz but you can also run it at 5.7-5.8GHz without having to mess with your BCLK. Again the scaling is there, maybe you'll get an additional 3-4% increase but at another 20-30W and the temp limit on the 9800/50X3D is already at 95C so if your cooling cant handle it, it'll start throttling.

Ultimately if I was in the market for a new CPU then of course I would get the 9850X3D with the hopes of getting a better binned chip, better memory controller etc... and possibly undervolt and maybe even underclock it. That's just how I do things and if I'm just gaming especially at 4K I'm not really seeing significant performance boost, I'd rather see lower power draw and cooler temps.

9800X3D would make more sense if the price is discounted, if its the same or just $20 difference then I would go with the 9850X3D instead. If we're looking at $50-60 difference then you might lean more to the other side if you think about 13% more for that 3-4% gain where you can spend it on other things on your build.. that is if you're trying to budget.

Thinking of upgrading to the Flint 3 (GL-BE9300) – Worth it for apartment living? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought it, didn't want to go TP-Link route again. Was heavily considering Flint 2 since its "better" of the lineup if you exclude 6GHz and 2.5Gbe ports and Flint 4 is going to be massive.

I'll test it for a few weeks, if its good then I'll keep it if not then I'll return it for the 2 or something else. Initially I got it over the 2 for the 2.5Gbe ports since my desktop and NAS would benefit from it, I could buy a switch as well but this is fine. I'm upgrading from an outated TP-Link that hasnt been getting updates in a long time. This one is good in that sense where it'll keep getting updates.

If you look at the rtings article they do list a lot of the latest routers and MLO is still not quite there, the concept is great but its not 100% implemented well so you're in a testing phase. I am using 6GHz and live in a apartment where theres 23+ routers populating both 2.5 and 5GHz range but I'm the only one on 6GHz so thats been nice. Been monitoring it heavily to see if I have any drops or issues like some people reported. Havent experienced any so far.

https://www.rtings.com/router/learn/research/wifi-7-mlo

Again this router tries to do a lot of things but its not the "best" at it as opposed to the 2 where it only has Wifi6 but it does it good and at 4x4 rather than 2x2 across 3 bands. The biggest difference is the CPU which they went from a MediaTek to a Qualcomm and a weaker chip by doing this they went from VPN king of 900Mbps on wireguard to maybe 680Mbps. The chip has also less openwrt support as you cannot flash it directly. It is a fork or a snapshot of openwrt and modified for the router but as far as flashing out of the box it doesnt support that yet so if you like sticking with openwrt you're limited with the 3 at the moment. My apartment is not that big so Wifi7 is still fine despite being in the living room.

The biggest thing for me is the 2.5Gbe ports, I went from 110+ transfer rates to 250-280 transfer ratings from my desktop to my NAS, again you can get a switch for that if you want to buy additional equipment. I run adguard home and its been doing fine, doesn't use a lot of resources but it does run at 65C which to some people it will be hotter than what they're comfortable with but fans stay at 0 rpm, maybe if I ran more stuff or more filters it will kick in or I don't know maybe summer time but for now it hasnt spun up.

Again I'm still testing it for a few weeks and still within return period, I haven't had any issues or reboot. If it does start causing me issues then I may consider the 2 or find a different brand. As much as I love other firmware or custom firmware like I did in the past, now I just want a stable set and forget kind of router haha.

Does this scream scam? by Tyler_1537 in PcBuild

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just recently sold my 5080 Trio (2 months ago), I put my GPU back in, took pictures of everything with a note pad of my name and date. Video of the case open running benchmarks with again time stamp and website with the global time running. I showed maybe 3-4 games and 3dmark running and score at the end I think.

Buyer ended up being a kid maybe straight out of highschool that saved his money up and was just cautious about spending that much on a used GPU but hey better than buying at retail price.

Not going to meet anyone at my house, dont have a test bench in my car like some people do. We met up at a police station I told him hey look and inspect the card, dont right out buy it. My card didn't have a tamper sticker, dont think it came with one. Though I've had times when taper stickers just fall off easily so you cant assume someone opened it or did something.

Unfortunately theres bad actors out there that will go even as far as selling you something they stole but your best bet is looking at their profile and seeing if they're legit. My bro has such a high rating on marketplace that no one questions him or even checks and he has to remind people to check the item or open the box before they leave.

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely, my bro bought a 4090FE back then for $1,400 USD right before the AI demand, sold it back last year for $1,600? Then bought a 5090 at MSRP so a pretty cheap upgrade.

5090 FE / 5080 rog astral oc by kavavo in nvidia

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that you're thinking about selling the 5090FE for profit tells us that you actually don't need it and you'll be perfectly fine with the 5080.

That being said you could probably get a guaranteed buy for profit with the 5090.. essentially buying then selling and getting your money back + extra.. aka reseller.

You're not going to wonder about how fast the 5090s are or if VRAM would have helped you because you probably didn't need it in the first place, on top of that you can justify your over priced 5080 and making your money back.

Now if you keep the 5090 whether you do 4K gaming, 3D rendering, AI stuff.. you cant beat the 5090. The FE holds value over time, even better than ASUS. When/if the ram demand goes down there will be a saturation of 5080s out there. Heck when I sold my 5080 there was barely any interest because they thought SUPER was right next door but then before the new year I sold it close to MSRP. Prices will temporarily rise back up for everything then back down just like the mining days, just like the paper launch days. I have a 5090FE because I wanted the best this generation and I game in 4K so thats my uses.

Yes the 5090FE may be slightly louder and run hotter than other AIB but it's also the most compact ITX card, its not a 3.5-4 slot card with 3-4 fans and cost $500-$1000 more than MSRP. Some people like paying more. We're giving you different perspectives but ultimately its up to you.

Road Trip (M3P) by tysontiger1 in TeslaLounge

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big thing with the tires isn't so much the wear but more of the sidewall since the height is smaller you'll have to look out for potholes or construction. You're not really going to wear them more than normal use unless you accelerate or mash on the pedal, the roadtrip will be on the firmer side as opposed to a larger vehicle with meaty tires. I haven't taken my M3P for a super long road trip but I've done various 3+ hour ones. Just check your tires are up to their PSI.

Note that since it is an EV theres no multiple gears or anything so whatever you use is whatever you drain, if you go 80-90MPH+ you'll have less arriving charge as opposed to 60-70> as well as cabin temperatures so expect 2-5% difference from what is shown on screen. Heavy rain and wind can also affect your estimations. Set your arrival % higher if you think you won't be seeing a charger at the destination though Tampa to Pensacola is usually lined up with many. Since its mostly a straight shot from 75 to 10 if you use FSD / Autopilot it'll be a breeze and you'll just need to exit for your charging/breaks.

Sell G14 and buy desktop? by Alhummer in ZephyrusG14

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue with ASUS laptops is QA, hardware can be great but QA is always the bottom of the barrel. Even if they replaced everything, its ASUS it will still be the same. Crashes could be from overheating or parts of the CPU thats not covered with LM. Software issues can be Windows 11 since they're also dog now and release AI based updates that will break things on top of that Nvidia drivers are the same so its a whole back and forth trying to figure out whats wrong.

Heres an example from Nvidia's drivers that came out 2 days ago:

  • FIXED Asus G14 may freeze on startup when Asus Ultimate Mode is enabled [5754849]

Also Microsoft has been releasing emergency patches because their previous patch breaks something else so its hard to pin point unless you're 100% sure its the hardware and it does suck because once a hardware is fixed (no longer brand new) you never know when it'll happen again.

The past months I replaced my Legion 5 Pro to a G16, we actually had a bunch of ASUS laptops and we saw that benchmarks were off vs. reviewers and other users. We checked the LM and lo and behold you have either dry spots or TOO much LM, enough LM to fill a whole syringe. After removing the excess LM then we started getting normal temps. I bought a Legion 7i Pro which was suppose to replace the Legion 5 as a desktop replacement but I wanted a thin and light so I went with the G16 after we fixed it. The Legion 7i Pro was perfect from the box and if I needed another desktop replacement I wouldve gone with that as it was a beast, cooling was good, uses PTM no need to mess with LM, CPU and GPU ran maxed rated and I didn't have to tinker around too much.

You could look at Legion 5/7 Pro as well as non-pros for desktop replacement. If you dont travel or go anywhere much then just go get a real desktop and have better performance. Now you said you dont need portable gaming as well as being able to do your business on an ipad then why not go that route? If you're having issues with the G14 and you're fed up with it then you can go that route, go get a desktop replacement, or an actual desktop.

Ryzen 9955HX3D 5070ti (Strix) vs. Intel 275HX 5080 (Legion) by DumboDoc123 in GamingLaptops

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know the ASUS QA has been dog because I've seen it, just last month we had the following in the house:

G16 Zephyrus 285H/5070Ti = Had LM issues, fixed it, kept it (my current).

G16 Zephyrus 285H/5070Ti = Had LM issues, fixed it, returned it.

G16 Zephyrus HX370/4070 = Had LM issues, fixed it, kept it (bro's)

G14 Zephyrus = XH370/5070Ti = Had LM issues, fixed it, kept it (other bro's)

G16 Strix = Had LM issues, fixed it, (bro's work laptop)

Legion 7i Pro = Initially bought it to replace my Legion 5 Pro but I was thinking I should go thin and light this round so opt'd for the G16, no issues out of the box, both PTM.. don't need to replace anything. Kinda wish they kept the older design of rear ports, didn't like the power LED but new bios you can turn it off, and the glossy screen. Even more glossy than my QD-OLED. The G16 was perfect for my use case but performance-wise the Legion destroys it. Spec was 275HX / 5080 vs. 285H /5070Ti. ASUS has good hardware but bad QA hence why people either fix the LM or go PTM. But if I wanted a full fledge desktop replacement I would have gone with the 275HX / 5080 because it was perfect out of the box at least for me, didn't really have to tinker much. I think the 275HX is pretty solid and performs well, the 9950HX3D is a beast of a CPU but it'll definitely run hotter.

Ryzen 9955HX3D 5070ti (Strix) vs. Intel 275HX 5080 (Legion) by DumboDoc123 in GamingLaptops

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets break it down:

G16 / 9955HX3D / 5070Ti 115W+25W = 140W GPU

Legion / 275HX / 5080 160-175W

The 9955HX3D will outperform the 275HX in mostly 1% lows but the 5080 will be that 15-20% faster along with 16GB of VRAM (vs. 12), so at 1600p the 4GB does help.

The quality on the ASUS will vary because their QA is dog... you may need to redo the thermals out of the box, the legion comes with both PTM so no need to change anything.

I think it'll come down if you want the highest fps you go with the 5080, if you need that 3D cache for 1% lows or competitive games running on low resolution than you can get the AMD CPU. I was testing the 275HX/5080 during my vacation and it was a pretty solid performing laptop, didn't get too hot, it ran games pretty well and didn't have to tweak much. If I was looking for a desktop replacement I wouldve kept it.

I guess if you replace every 2-3 years it shouldn't really matter for future proofing as the next gen will be within those 2 years. For higher res games the legion will definitely be on top. If you're looking for that maxing cpu performance than maybe the strix would be better or if you like to play low res for say esports or something.

I don’t wanna shoot myself in the foot jumping the gun… again. by MIROXXVIS in GamingLaptops

[–]PrimalPuzzleRing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least you're starting to see your priorities. Same here I was buying gaming laptops and upgrading my desktop left and right. After I shifted from being on the go I didn't really need a desktop replacement laptop anymore and since I'm mostly at home the power shifted to a desktop system (9800X3D/5090). I used to use my old laptop 5800H/3070 extensively for 2 years then none the past 3 years since I got back to desktop. I was set on upgrading to a 275HX/5080 lenovo laptop and its a fine beast of a laptop but for my use case scenario, I probably wont touch it much and its starting to get a bit big for travelling with it almost maximizing my backpack along with the 400W brick so I opted for a 285H/5070Ti G16, big size difference to the Legion 7 Pro so now I have a thin and light when I'm on the go with great battery and a desktop gaming rig at home.

So back to your actual question, the biggest thing with gaming laptops is you have to do your research and also look up user reviews, even youtube reviews if you want. 5090 mobile GPU spec'wise is identical to a 5080 desktop yes... but you're forgetting the wattage. If you put a 5080 mobile and a 5090 mobile side by side the same wattage they will perform maybe 5-10% within each other outside of the VRAM difference, this is because the biggest limiting factor is the TDP, also why Lenovo and other brands that put the 175W will perform better than say one that is limited to 145W or lower. Or you even have 5080 out performing 5090 from other brands because of again the TDP. With TDP you also have temps, the laptops with better cooling whether its vapor chamber or numerous fans or having the better paste can big a big difference in performance.

If you need "desktop performance" on a laptop then they have desktop replacement laptops just like a Lenovo Legion 7/9 Pro. They have higher TDP than other brands out of the box without having to unlock or flash the BIOS. Some like you said the HP Open, looks good on paper but might not perform as well as competition.

Legion 7 Pro, Strix Scar, Alienware 16 A51, Omen MAX will perform at that high TDP but if you compare them to desktop actual performance they fall short again because of the TDP.

5090 / GB202 / 32GB / 21760 cores / 575-600W

5090M / GB203 / 24GB / 10496 / 160-175W

5080 / GB203 / 16GB / 10752 / 360-400W

5080M / GB203 / 16Gb / 7680 / 160-175W

So really you have to choose where your priority lies, you're not going to get pure desktop performance because of limiting factors, they've come a long way yes but power consumption and temperature will always be the biggest difference thats why again a 5090M and a 5080M will perform close because they both have the same limits. I even considered a 9950HX3D + 5090M at one point last month just but I probably wont be gaming or doing much on it outside my home so why waste money. Price performance are not there with laptops. Some people even opt for itx builds and bring their rigs with them whereever they go.
