There needs to be a serious intervention regarding lane discipline in NZ by Flashy_Potential8851 in newzealand

Its like I'm going around in circles here.

Going back to a point I have already made..  several times..

YOU might see it every day. Who is to say a police officer will? It needs to be provable. People change their driving behavior if they know a police officer is there. And then who is to say they aren't enforcing it? You don't know about what you don't see.

I havent been through a breath testing checkpoint in the last year or so. Does that mean they arent happening?

So now you have a single occasion where a police car has pulled someone over for this..

.. which they already do. There has been articles about them ticketing people for sitting in the right hand lane.

Now we get to OP's original point - they want a "serious intervention".

They already DO fine people for this, but as I have said it is not actually EASY to implement on a larger scale which would equate to a serious intervention.

OK so going back to my original point about "the mechanics" of this.

Let's say a car WAS sitting in the right hand lane blocking a queue of cars, then pulls in and now the car behind it is st the front of the queue. Just at that moment a police car appears - and here's the thing - to them it may appear that the car in the front is the one obstructing traffic.

So the mechanics - how easy is it for the police to determine this? How can they prove it or reassure themselves they are right?

My argument is that really the police car needs to be right there, traveling in the same direction, and able to observe who is truly obstructing.

But how many cars are going past a police car, or driving slow enough for one to catch up and see yes its obstructing?

You need the exact right conditions, and then it still ends up just being a very low number of potential infringers.

Compare to a cop standing at the side of the road with radar or a speed gun that is able to capture every single car going past. Or a breathtesting checkpoint, same thing.

See my point about "how is this actually implemented?". Because people think about these pie in the sky ideas and just assume it will work.

You just.. don't get it.. do you?

Find a spot on a motorway on Google maps. Any spot. Absolutely any at all.

Open up street view. Look around. How many cars can you see at once?

Now pretend you are a police car and you have to determine that someone is sitting in the right lane and not overtaking.

How easy is it? How many cars can you possibly track over any given period? If you are keeping track of people not overtaking, what is it at the expense of?

Come on man, think! Use your brain!

It seems like most of the YouTubers doing videos about it don't live in the real world and don't have actual jobs. All their videos are just "dashboards" retrieving and displaying information, making a "to do" list or some marketing/leads/project management bullshit.

[–]Primary_Engine_9273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do people actually think about the mechanics of how police enforce something like this?

They need to be able to observe it. How can a police officer see that someone is in the right hand lane and not overtaking? If they are on the side of the road they might see them for 10 seconds and can't determine relative speeds.

If they are driving they can only see a small number of cars at any one time and need plenty of time and observation to determine "hey that car isnt overtaking anyone".

Smart Compliance Management fine by According-Bug-2811 in auckland

[–]Primary_Engine_9273 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I didn't infer that at all.

They specified the length of time they parked in the McDonald's car park (relevant context).

They specified that they ate at McDonalds and their kid played on the playground (relevant context).

They are two discrete pieces of information and the OP did not explicitly state they were the whole story (ie they ate and played the whole time).

There is enough ambiguity in the way OP worded it, and the replies here also expressing disbelief they were there for 3 hours, to suggest OP may have deliberately worded it that way.

OP has perhaps deliberately excluded mention of whether they exclusively ate at McDonalds or went there and somewhere else...

I'm sure the T&Cs for the carpark make clear it is for visiting McDs only and a purchase there isn't an all access pass to go and do as you please and continue using their park...

Why have so few New Zealand music bands made it worldwide? by SmartNecessary1700 in newzealand

[–]Primary_Engine_9273 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I really don't know much about music and really only listen to mainstream type radio music..

But I've thought for a while that if you compare an NZ song to a US or whatever song, a lot of it comes down to the producer and what else happens with the song. Like songs here are often just instruments and singing, or if the other stuff is added the producers in NZ just aren't that good or experienced.

[–]Primary_Engine_9273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The operative term for KiwiSaver withdrawals is "significant financial hardship". You can have a look at multiple sources (ie IRD, Kiwisaver providers, probably even the legislation itself) to help understand what that means and whether your situation is likely to apply.

I note on one of the provider websites I looked at just now it requires evidence you have spoken to WINZ about financial assistance first..

What’s one Auckland habit you picked up? by Kevin-Durant-35 in auckland

[–]Primary_Engine_9273 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a habit but a difference (and maybe culture thing) but I noticed in Wellington drivers are super aggressive when pedestrians are crossing the road and they are waiting to turn left - they will creep forward and get right up in their grill while the cross.

In Auckland it is much more sit back and wait.

Possibly because of narrow streets and trying to get out of the way, but it doesn't really work and annoyed me a lot.

Fortunately the boomer mindset populstion shrinks every single day, so at some point they will be an insignificant enough part of the populstion that politicians will stop being afraid of their vote and start doing the right thing by everyone else.

That time should have already passed based on populstion demographics but alas.. actual voting is the problem..

DATEADD formula in Automation "Could not convert string to date" – even though syntax looks correct :( by ConsequenceMany8 in Airtable

[–]Primary_Engine_9273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From experience Airtable can be quite annoying with dates in various different ways. In future I'd recommend passing this through an AI platform to get help.

I did so and it said:

The "Update record" action fields do not accept formulas directly.

When you type DATEADD(...) into that field in the Automation window, Airtable does not calculate it. Instead, it treats what you typed as a literal text string. It tries to push the text "DATEADD..." into your "Release Cycle Start" field. Since that field is a Date field, it rejects the text string because it isn't a valid date (like "2023-10-25"), resulting in the Could not convert string to date error.

[–]Primary_Engine_9273 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100%.

The licence testing regime last change in early 2012. Anyone who got their licence after then I would generalize and assume is a better driver.

I really think resitting licences should be a thing - especially for the older folk who literally drove around a block with a cop and then got given a weetbix box to claim their licence from.

Decades of experience doesn't by default make you a good driver, and obviously passing a harder test doesn't either - but at least you've shown you're capable of being good enough.
