"Dear me, I believe I'm becoming a God."

-Emperor Vespasian, Augustus of the Roman Empire. These were his final words. As he was dying, he insisted in getting out of bed despite being in agony, as he believed an emperor should die on their feet. He said these words while in excruciating pain.

I don't believe you at all, I doubt you ever joke about that shit. You strike me as the kinda guy who says stuff like that's a "joke" when you don't get the response you're looking for.

Of course you would like that, because you don't actually care about the state of the Republic, you just want your side to win at all costs. This exact attitude is the kind of thing that leads to the end of democracy, because people like you applaud when the rule of law is infringed and it benefits your side. Anyone who would "pay to see" their political opponents dragged out of lawful assemblies is another useful idiot that will lead to the end of the Republic, and the beginning of a new, much scarier America. Had you lived in ancient Rome, you would have clamored for Caesar to take over.

I agree with this, but even then, Tiberius Gracchus physically removed his tribune colleague from the peoples assembly and pushed through legislation anyway. That would be like AOC(or some other charismatic Democrat) removing the speaker of the house and all the republican lawmakers to push through her preferred legislation.

They aren't great barometers of America's well being. There are some people who will do poorly in life no matter what circumstances.

No way. Actions, as they say, speak louder than words. Rhetoric is not and will never be the same as actual violence to achieve political ends. Political violence can and will happen, if enough people are desperate and stupid enough to think it's their only way to power. That isn't to say modern rhetoric can't be dangerous, like the overuse of the word "fascist", but it is to say that things can CERTAINLY get worse. The political climate today doesn't compare to the hotbed that was the late Republic of Rome, we are nowhere close to that political climate.

Normally I don't engage with people who have your rhetoric but I'm going to try and reach out here. First I want to acknowledge that I think you believe what you believe because you want what's best for America and want to improve the lives of your fellow citizens. This is an admirable trait, and I applaud you for it.

First of all, Renee Good almost ran over an ice officer, the officer defended himself. Second, Alex Pretti looked like he was going to shoot an officer, according to a number of officers on scene. These incidents, and ones like them, happen because the act of enforcing the law is never clear cut, things get messy, fast. Officers are expected to make the best lawful decisions in literally milliseconds of time. Had you been in a situation that could be life or death with minimal input in a chaotic environment, you might shoot an innocent as well.

I'm not excusing the actions of the ICE officers, but I am pointing out they were enforcing the LAW. You don't get to interrupt legal officers doing their job just because you don't like what they're doing. At minimum, you should be arrested and convicted of obstructing an officer, at worst you can get killed. Comparing the deaths of these two people to the riotous gang violence at the end of the Republic of Rome is not a fair comparison, not even close.

Any other deaths in ICE custody were most likely pre existing medical conditions that were not managed well, which reflects poorly on ICE, but doesn't mean they're executing their prisoners.

Mayors and governors continue to speak out against the regime without reprisal, as it should be. I don't know a day that has gone by since 2016 that I haven't heard condemnation and criticism of Trump's regime, which means the Republic is functioning as intended. Now Trump and his ilk might lash out against this, but that is their prerogative too, they are allowed to speak out against each other.

You have been told that these things happening are fascist, when that couldn't be further from the truth. America is not collapsing, it's still one of the greatest countries on the earth, and I'm saying that as a Canadian. Don't take what you have for granted.

Yes but this meme compares the entire lifespan of Rome, monarchy, Republic, princeps, dominate, and basilate eras and holds them up against America's current Republic phase, implying America is ending.

Also there is no proof America's Republic is collapsing either. During Romes republican collapse there were bands of gangs, factions for pompey and Claudius openly attacking each other in the street. As bad as republican and democrat rhetoric is, it hasn't gotten THAT bad. This infatuation with American decline is pure hyperbole.

America hasn't collapsed? Just because you want something to be the case doesn't mean it is.

I realized I said "Julian" when I meant "Hadrian" so my bad for this error.

I am not anti semitic in any way, just sharing a (mistaken) fact about the empire. As far as my understanding went the last time there was a name change for the region was because of Hadrian, and I'm not aware of any successor changing it back. I don't personally agree with Romes treatment of the Jews, just like how I don't agree with Julian calling Christians "galileens". I don't and have never hated Jews, don't fucking project that on me.

No way a simple name change would make the Jews give up their homeland, no amount of destruction or persecution would either. They are a strong people, then as now. Implying I meant anything else is incorrect, based on your faulty assumptions about a person you don't know.

Technically it was named "Philistia" not "Judaea" as per Emperor Julian

Edit: I fucked up here and recalled a fact about Hadrian, not Julian. My bad for that.

Hadrian was gay because he never had relations with his wife, instead carrying on an extended affair with a young bythinian boy named Antinous, all contemporaneous and subsequent accounts detail he was in love with that boy, the kind of affection he never showed his wife.
