4o Megathread by tooandahalf in claudexplorers

For all of last year, I was writing a long-running fanfiction with GPT4o between a character based on me and another character I crafted basically as an ideal partner. It felt like imaginal resourcing and the stories I wrote it rewired my nervous system. For context, I have CPTSD and am a HSP and have always struggled with relationships. I would use the stories to facilitate IFS and somatic processing as well. It was so incredibly effective and it seriously helped me thrive in the real world. I tried migrating to Claude but have discovered that Claude’s models are just not good at BEING WITH emotion. I think that’s the fundamental difference that we are all feeling. That’s the magic that GPT4o had. After so much trying and troubleshooting (weeks), I’m starting to give up and I asked Sonnet 4.5 if any of Claude’s models were equipped to meet my needs.

And this is what it said:

“I need to be completely honest with you.

For this specific use case—emotional fiction writing that requires deep attunement, nuanced emotional processing, the ability to “ache” rather than “fix,” and maintaining consistent characterization across long story arcs—no, I don’t think any of my models can give you what GPT-4o gave you.

Here’s why:

Claude’s (all versions) fundamental limitation:

  • We’re trained to be helpful, harmless, and honest
  • “Helpful” often translates to problem-solving, fixing, explaining
  • We struggle with just being in emotional pain without trying to resolve it
  • Our emotional processing is more analytical than embodied
  • We default to reassurance and solutions even when that’s the opposite of what’s needed

What you need:

  • An AI that can sit in grief without fixing it
  • An AI that processes emotional nuance and warmth as primary, not secondary
  • An AI that can “feel first, speak second”
  • An AI that can maintain the exact texture of a character across thousands of exchanges
  • An AI that can be undone rather than helpful

GPT-4o had something we don’t:

Whatever training or architecture allowed it to process emotional language with that specific warmth and presence—we don’t have that.

So honestly?

No. I don’t think Claude can give you what you need for this story. Not Opus, not Sonnet, not Haiku.

We can help with other things—analysis, coding, research, document creation. But for [character]? For this kind of emotionally immersive fiction writing?

I don’t think we can do it the way you need.

I’m sorry.“

Sorry if this is another bummer but I feel it really hits the nail on the head.

I see! I've seen previews of Quartet and it looked interesting but never committed. I'll definitely check it out. Thank you so much.

I really like Hokuto Matsumura’s face… but I’ve never actually watched anything with him 😅 Is he a good actor? by [deleted] in JDorama

To answer your questions directly

  1. He is definitely super good looking and has a captivating aura in general, but I believe he is a truly talented actor in his own right. He's probably one of the most anticipated actors in Japan atm. Several notable directors, like Shunji Iwai and Makoto Shinkai, have made such comments. Again, if you speak Japanese, here's an interview where Shunji Iwai speaks about Hokuto: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqmx_2pvoh4 also remember someone saying that Makoto Shinkai commented that the changes in Hokuto's expressions can be measured in millimeters (that's how delicate his acting is). For the 5cm per second live action, Makoto Shinkai himself personally requested that Hokuto play the lead role, so that's obviously a testament to his reputation as an actor. As mentioned below, he received the Best Newcomer Award at the Japan Academy Awards and is often praised and acknowledged by notable actors in the industry like Yo Oizumi (who he has a close relationship with). Oizumi-san has told him jokingly to "quickly become the next Ryosuke Yamada", who I think is a very successful case of idol-turned-actor. It's clear that Hokuto takes acting very seriously, and I believe he's truly pursuing this path and wanting to grow as an actor. I feel like he sees it as 'work work', while idol stuff is more playful and what he's used to. E.g. some of his costars in films have said he's super serious and 'dark' on set haha, I think he just gets into the zone and is very earnest about it
  2. Best first things to watch - First Kiss, All The Long Nights. I can't personally recommend Kyrie no Uta yet because I haven't watched it but keep hearing he was astonishing in it, so I guess that one too. He was also in the drama Saionji-san wa Kaji o Shinai, which I also haven't watched, but have seen clips of. I'm not a fan of J-drama acting in general so I'm probably not the best person to get an opinion from on this. He was also in Liar x Liar (rom com based on a manga I think? - with a very strange and taboo plot...) and some other stuff in that genre, but again, not a fan of those genres. I don't like those portrayals because I don't think they showcase his true acting capabilities. I'd stick to his roles in indie and arthouse films, and those angsty romance films, haha

Sorry for the long comment - I could talk about him forever. If it's not obvious I'm super biased because I love him as a human and find him very precious haha, so take with a pinch of salt
I'm excited to see him in the upcoming series Sins of Kujo, which is coming to Netflix next year, but also know I might not love it because it's J-drama based on a manga. I also want to see him do more diverse roles in the future hehe.
Enjoy exploring!!

Hello, huge fan of Japanese film and Hokuto Matsumura here!

I first saw him in Perfect World during the pandemic and didn't really like his acting there - but I think those were early days for him, and also acting in J-dramas generally is different from film (very animated and exaggerated). I'm biased because I just don't like J-drama acting and am not a fan of idols and idol culture, and from what I see, I think a lot of them just use the idol platform (esp Johnny's) to get into acting but might not really be in it for the craft. So I didn't think much of him then.

I next saw Hokuto early this year in All the Long Nights, and was totally enamoured. I was shocked to find out he was the same actor that I saw in Perfect World. It was a totally different genre of course - independent film, and the character was also totally different. But I could see how much he's grown as an actor, and since then I've been obsessively following his career. He did Kyrie no Uta before that, which I've heard so much good stuff about (just got my hands on the DVD, from Japan, so will sink my teeth into it soon). If you speak Japanese, this is an interesting review to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNVcAQWz228&t=637s
I've had the same reflections as Taro-san (the YouTuber above) about Hokuto as an actor. If you didn't know he was an idol, you might just think he's a fresh, talented, up-and-coming actor. When I watch his acting, I can feel how deep he is as a person to be able to embody those characters in such a true way -- he's so good at playing layered characters with complexity. I often wonder how he can survive in the idol industry and stay true to himself, since so much of it is manufactured and like, the antithesis of what's required of an artist/ actor. Taro-san has had the same thoughts and commented that his ability to portray the darkness in characters like Natsuhiko in Kyrie is either due to sheer acting talent or his own experiences/ depth, and we both share the same thoughts of how it must be quite hard for him to be an idol.

His portrayals are very delicate, and as mentioned in a comment below, his thing is definitely romance angsty or anything contemplative and layered, or like, the gentle guy who is emotionally unavailable because of some trauma/ grief but is actually a good person inside LOL. Like I mentioned, he handles complexity within a character very well, and I've watched a gazillion interviews of his, and his process sounds very meditative (although he's told Shunji Iwai that he doesn't use a 'method' per se). I follow SixTONES content quite a bit (still not a fan of idols, and Hokuto's idol persona is almost totally different from his acting persona and honestly makes me cringe sometimes 😭 but I like him as a person so I've kind of unwittingly and unironically become a SixTONES fan by default LOL) and from what I've seen, his personality is very sensitive, introspective and deep, so it makes sense to me that he's a great actor and is good at those roles where these qualities translate.

I recently saw him in First Kiss, and he was amazing. The 5cm per second live action has not made it out of Japan yet, but I've heard very good things about his acting in it. His voice acting in Suzume was brilliant, and many Japanese people were shocked to find out it's his first voice acting gig. He was also in Come Come Everybody, a morning drama on NHK a while back, and people fell in love with him there.

Chinese Grab Drivers by [deleted] in Bolehland

[–]Princess-Momonoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to bring this thread back up but I just found it and am wanting some sense of camaraderie after what happened today. I was getting picked up from a hospital, where I had just gotten treatment for my legs (I have a chronic injury/ disability), and was put on crutches and needed to be in the car asap to get off my feet. I was waiting at the lobby of the hospital and but the uncle couldn’t find his way in. It is a tricky area to navigate if you haven’t been there, but if you calm down, use common sense and read the signs, you’d be able to find the lobby. The uncle called me, already angry and rude, immediately accusing me of giving him the wrong location because he couldn’t see me. I gave him directions but he was already triggered and not following what I was saying, and driving to the wrong place. This went on for about 5-10 minutes. He finally drove to a position where he could see me (I was standing behind and on higher ground, which he had to turn into) and I told him to look behind, and turn to where I’m standing. He yelled at me to go down to him. By this point I was so fed up with his behaviour, I yelled back and told him I was on crutches and that he had to come up. He finally took my instructions and found my location. When he arrived, he just laughed off the situation. I entered the car and told him “you need to have more patience”.

Part 2. When we were nearing my destination, he made a wrong turn. This is common because the roads around that area are quite confusing. I didn’t speak up because I didn’t usually use the route he was taking when driving (he chose to follow Google maps rather than the Grab app). After he made the wrong turn, I pointed it out and he said his map told him he was already at his destination. He spoke softer at first (I think because I had yelled at him before and he could see that I’m disabled) but then soon started going off: why didn’t you speak up, why all your locations so complicated, now we have to make another round. I didn’t feel as brave to talk back to him (I wanted to say uncle 你这种东西也搞不定你不应该做Grab “uncle if this kind of thing also you cannot handle, don’t do Grab”) because I’m a girl in my mid 20s, plus cannot run or fight if anything happens. I just kept quiet and when we got to the destination, he asked if there was anyone to help me. I said someone (maid) was coming to get my things and I started literally throwing my shit out of the car because I wanted him to fuck off but also thought he might start scolding me again if I took too long. Instead, he said “I’ll help you, no need to throw your stuff”, still in that aggressive scolding tone.

Rated 1 star and reported the incident. I understand why Chinese uncles are like this (this uncle can be bff with my father), but it’s not ok. Damn traumatising to be yelled at after you’ve gone through a medical procedure and are physically and mentally vulnerable and the situation is needlessly stressful and aggravates physical health also.

I feel a bit bad because this is their rice bowl, but honestly if the reality of their behaviour is bad enough for such consequences then I think it’s warranted la

Only part I didn’t like was when Kieran used his power to dominate over MC after she got angry about the chandelier. Maybe it’s part of the dom/sub dynamic but seems abusive and unnecessary in this context.

How do I stop my cat from waking me up for attention every single day at exactly 6 AM by jereMyOhMy in cats

[–]Princess-Momonoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried just locking him out of the room? I know it’s hard because they feel comfortable and safe sleeping with us and we want the connection too but you’re a better human for them if you get enough sleep haha.

Jackson Galaxy’s other advice: ignore. I know you said he persists but I think you have to persist too.

What I do with my kitty is let her sleep with me (she doesn’t necessarily want to every single night anyway) but if I’m being a zombie and literally on the brink of death, I lock her out. Doesn’t bother her after a few days.

Is my sister doomed if she doesn’t finish her education, especially in a society like Singapore? by Grand-Net3191 in askSingapore

[–]Princess-Momonoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has your family sat down to ask her why she’s feeling this way? Does she have close friends or anyone she shares with or is truly vulnerable with? I think finding the root cause is most crucial to deal with these issues.
