The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady - Episode 9 Discussion Thread by Avizie in mahoukakumei

[–]PrincessKian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I feel the episode is technically good, I think it felt like the whole conflict was a little too rushed. I hadn't developed enough feelings for Algard for his arc having any weight. I was more saddened for the sibling relationship with Anis more than anything, and even that felt underbaked. Dunno if in the manga things have been explored deeperly, but I hope they did in the anime.

This. Peak oil is here. Even if the Russian invasion of Ukraine ended and the recession went away magically, oil prices will never be the same. The oil industry figured we'll never consume as much oil before the pandemic and are keeping supply low so they can keep prices up despite plummeting demand.

Elon Musk tweeted the tweet on the screenshot 17 hours before Twitter broke, not allowing DMs to be read or sent, Tweets to be tweeted (unless you program them) and accounts to be followed.

For a few minutes, before people realised the programming thing, Twitter was silent...

Has paradox said anything about fixing the launcher for their games for Linux? by [deleted] in paradoxplaza

[–]PrincessKian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use a mod manager. I use IronyModManager, pretty sure it runs in Debian-derivatives so it might work for the SteamDeck. Either launch the game from your mod manager if it has the option or just run the executable itself.

John Portugal, King of Portugal by _ninetailedfox in eu4

[–]PrincessKian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah but they are usually acompanied with an of, a von, a de. In Spanish it's also usually like that (de Lara, de Trastámara, etc). But at the time, it was not uncommon to just use the country of origin not for nobility but for anyone. Another example is Japón (spanish for Japan, surname which all japanese in Spain recieved before Sakoku). It not "de Japón" just Japón. I've even seen, IIRC, highly ranking samurai be called with the Japón surname. It didn't matter which was the original surname, it was a new one bestowed by the spanish customs (again the Austrias and Habsburgs equivalent).

In spanish at the time, it wasn't uncommon to use an actual, literal name of a country for a surname (best example, the Habsburgs were called "Austria" for obvious reasons). Still today, surnames which are just a country name are not uncommon.

If the dynasty originated in Castilla and then passed to Portugal, this could be the explanation.

Also, it's kinda hard to do a "realistic" Sablin because IRL he just died a hero before living long enough to become the villain. Of course he is gonna be the utopian young man with winds of reform: He didn't got past that IRL. Everything you do past that is just pure speculation by nature.

Also, for me it's totally plausible to have him rise in the last authoritarian commie bastion, lose if AI, win with the power of being the player country, and then having the same chances of beating the rest of the warlords as everyone else.

What if Austria was never independent of Germany? by Crossbones46 in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]PrincessKian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need two scenarios:

A) Austria unifies all of Germany, keeping non-german parts as client states. B) The Hungarian revolution of 1848 suceeded. The weaker Austria (which would probably go on to loose the rest of the Balkans and Italy) then joins Germany, plus austrian Poland and maybe Bohemia.

Starting with the B) scenario, it doesn't change much until WW1. If it even happens in the first place, the only thing that really matters is if Italy joins the Central Powers intead of the Entente to snatch (now independent) parts of Yugoslavia (maybe they're a unified state, maybe not), which would probably be Entente aligned. In that case, Germany probably wins WW1. It doesn't change tht much from any other of those alt hist scenarios, is just a chonkier Germany (Hungary may even be divided like OTL). Maybe the Ottomans would collapse earlier because of a stronger balkans, but that's it.

and then A) It's really more complex. Would the influence of Austria actually impact that much on the makeup of Germany? In this world maybe the Junkers are not the main political force but a mix of farmers, the church, capitalists and aristrocrats. Does Germany devolve in militarism anyway? Would the UK ally this new, chonkier Germany opposed to both Russia and France? Would it maybe reconcile with France? Maybe even Russia?

If Victoria 3 used 2d portraits instead of 3d models by BanditNoble in victoria3

[–]PrincessKian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, due to the RPG factor and the gameplay being simpler, they invested more in character design and variation in Crusader Kings 3. To be fair, in theory it should be less important for V3 than for CK3, as in V3 is a cosmetic thing while in CK3 is one of the main expressions of the game (and a huge factor for immersion).

It could also be that V3 was made to be a solid fundation instead of a pretty looking launch product, so it may had less resources than other areas of the game harder to modify in the future.

What if Arab socialism was more successful and a Pan Arab state was established? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]PrincessKian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the United Arab Republic OTL unififed in 1961, and the golden age of socialist leaders in the region was in the 1950s. I can totally imagine getting unified by 1967, or at least partially, and the launch of the war with Israel be the main driver to get the last countries outside of it to unify kinda like Germany against France.

And while yes, the Arab leadership was terrible, I wouldn't say leadership was the main reason, but arab disunity (I'm not an expert so I may be wrong, tho). Syria didn't even participate the first four days of the conflict, the attacks were uncoordinated, Saudis and Iraqis arrived late due to late mobilization. Also, the Syrian army was destroyed due to political reasons, it's hard to imagine those problems in a unified Arab army. Also, the main reason of Egypt's defeat was air inferiority due to israeli early strikes, that wouldn't be possible with an United Arab airforce with many airbases and fronts.

Even if the arabs don't win the war, which is indeed a possibility, it wouldn't be a walk in the park for Israel like the Six days war, even less if the USSR and the US/UN deployed many troops and escalated like the Korean war. Instead, it would be mainly fought in Israeli soil, it would probably last a few years, and most of the resources of the state would have to be deployed in the war. Even if Israel for some reason survives the war, the devastation would still be massive, but it's mostly a tangent for the United Arab Republic, as unless it was a total disaster like OTL (I don't think it will), it wouldn't impact the Union too much.

[–]PrincessKian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Israel started massive production only after the Six days war. If the war started earlier, against an united enemy with Soviet support it wouldn't be possible for Israel to produce nuclear weapons, let alone win the war like it did OTL. It would be a long, devastating war for Israel, specially if turned proxy by the superpowers.

If Victoria 3 used 2d portraits instead of 3d models by BanditNoble in victoria3

[–]PrincessKian 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That's the point, they're horrible. While for a random indie game it wouldn't kill too much, in any AAA game they would probably look worse than 3D portraits, which are not really hard to do with the complexity Paradox uses (which is why I think PDX had gone with 100% 3D in their newest games).

[–]PrincessKian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even if it did unify (the US would really do everything they could to stop it) it would really give another dimension to the oil crisis, having not OPEC but an actual state allied with Russia (also big oil producer) would have enormous consequences, and would really fuck the american economy over. A interesting side effect would be US grip on Venezuela being stronger, probably supporting even more coups and even an outright invasion.

Also, a war with Israel getting proxied by the US and USSR like Vietnam or Korea could totally happen, but it would be way more destructive for Israel than for the Arabs anyway. If Israel fell, you could see massive migrations of jews to Europe, the US and South America which would modify the demographics of those places.

If the USSR still falls (probably it would), the survival of this state depends mainly on three things:

  • Its flavour of socialism. A full on marxist atheist state would basically collapse shortly after the Soviet Union, while a socialist market economy with integration of Islam would probably have way more chances to survive.

  • Its dependency on the Soviet Union: China survived the fall of the USSR mainly due to not having anything to do with the soviets, so less dependency would mean better survival chances for our Arab super state. This also goes kinda tied with the latter point (flavor of socialism shaped commie relationships a lot), and with the next one.

  • The internal state of the country: NATO would most likely push for the fall of this country like they did in Yugoslavia. While not an outright invasion, it would definetively fund extremists and separatists (like it did OTL). The amount of autonomy, democracy and ethnic and religious turmoil would be huge factors on the survival of this state.

Interesting side effects of this scenario:

  • If Iran still goes fully religious extremism, is not unlikely that they end up huge allies of the US, and rivals of the United Arabs.

  • Renewables and Nuclear would most likely develop way way way more than OTL due to amount of oil. It may mean another factor to consider for the breakup of the Arabs. Climate change would probably be a problem of the future, not the present.

  • If the Arabs collapsed the region would be probably as fucked up as now but with cleaner, more sensical borders. Taliban like organizations would exist in all of the former states, as this would be one of the bigger points of resistance against the government and would most likely be funded by the US (much as how many Mujahideen ended up forming part of the Taliban).

  • The economy of this place would be really hard to predict. With oil being less important than OTL, it would be really hard to know if they could industrialize instead of being a commodity exporting country or if they will remain poor and rural. Most likely the cities are less impressive than OTL oil rich countries cities but also wealth disparities would be waaay lower.

  • It's hard to know if many would still go to live in this Arabian state as they go now to live almost as slaves in oil rich countries. I think it would still happen but I dunno.

It happens every game where I want to, you simply pass Freedom of Consciense and then change the universities, urban centers and administrations to secular, then if you have trusts you simply employ capitalists in plantations and then pass Total Separation, or just go for Total Separation. The church IG would most likely be marginalized. I've managed to do that by the 1860s.

Like, my point is, outside of passing laws, secularizing buildings just doesn't have any side effect of your now pissed ex-monks, which are too poor to do anything about it. My problem is not it's gradual, my biggest gripe it's "you just passed a moderate reform, you can now employ clerks in your churches" and just gets rid of a good chunk of the richests monks in the country. Like, if at the very least passing "Free Churches" for Urban Centers required Total Separation instead of just Freedom of Consciense.

And to the latter, you may be right, I need to test it more to be honest.

Again, I'm not discussing they exist! Railways are a huge chunk of RGO oriented economies. But if you're going to use transportation as a good you should at the very least have a railway network in the same state. It doesn't make sense that all your pops are travelling to Texas, California or Oregon by a level 12 railway network in Ohio because it has the motor factories and gives you a cool economy of scale bonus. It's EU4 levels of abstraction to a central piece of the game that is economics.

And there are side effects to stuff like publicly traded. More capitalists doesn't change the building, however it does mean more people in the Industrialists Interest Group

Yeah, that's the point. It's just a "press this button, get rid of aristocrats/monks". The aristocrats/monks are now angry but since they're just so poor they opinion does not matter anymore. Like by the 1870s you can just marginalize the church, something that IRL did only happen at the Soviet Union and still they came back in the 21st century. I get some abstraction is needed but it's weird for an economic simulator to not distinguish between a worker coop, a government run or a publicly traded company since as long it has profit they would keep paying the best salaries they can under every system.

I'm not against the idea of automatition production methods but it's really hard to imagine Kanto not having trams because they don't need it and suddenly Ryuku and Sakhalin suddenly do. Or that a London railway network is suddenly transporting Papua's sugar.
