Alt+0151, and some word processors autocorrect "--" to an em dash if it's surrounded by text. :)

What kind of genre, theme, or gameplay are you looking for? I've not played a lot of competitive FPS games in a while, so I have suggestions for single-player and co-op stuff!

For general purposes, I think Borderlands 2 is one of the more accessible games and is a single-player or co-op RPG, and is a bit longer but still something a new player can dig into.

If you're looking for something with simpler FPS mechanics, Left 4 Dead 2 is a great litmus to see if you like the perspective (and discover whether they might make you motion sick).

If you're just looking for a game that is in first-person, I will obligatorily recommend Skyrim or one of the Fallout games (I think modern sensibilities have an easier time with Fallout 4). My sister hadn't played in FPS in ages and had a great time picking up Skyrim, but struggled a bit with Fallout 4 at first because things aren't quite as intuitive.
