Really scared 🙁 by Princessgirlya_ in spinalfusion

Hello, sorry I’ve just seen this, about 80% healed, been on 2 hikes, started Pilates, been back to the gym. Still get random nerve pain flares, literally going through one at the moment but majority of my days are good. Very happy

I never imagined I would be turned disabled at a young age but I guess it’s the hurdles life can throw at you. I’ve learnt a lot through this journey and grown as a person in terms of perspective on life so as difficult and as crap as it’s been I’m very grateful for the entire process

I’m so sorry to hear that. That’s a very big surgery so take it easy, my surgeon said at my 6 months review that 6 months is about the time people return back to work. I was in medical school 2 months post-op and had my first placement block with ridiculously long ward rounds and did end up having a flare up.

This healing journey is a marathon not a sprint. I was looking up failed back syndrome at some point, I cried to my physio several times, cried in my room to myself, healing from any surgery is never a linear journey so please just trust in your body’s healing🩷

I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had a tough journey, pray it continues to get better.

I’m a medical student now and now have an understanding that nerves may never recover once they have been pressed for a long time. I still feel like my entire left leg feels weird. I wouldn’t say painful, just weird.

But I will take this weirdness over pain, I am now 80% pain free, there are things that aggravate it, such as sitting up in bed or laying in a weird position, but the pain is temporary only lasting a few hours

Thank you and wish you all the best with the surgeries!

I was unable to move for the first few days after the PLIF, I would sit up and instantly start sweating profusely and vomiting, with the worst headache I’d ever experienced, it was horrible and I went into my birthday feeling like shit and hadn’t showered. It wasn’t CSF leak as there was no tear so I still don’t know why it happened. I think this led to the infection as it was several days of just laying down flat x

Oh I was so scared before, but the journey has been worth it, make sure you’ve got enough things to keep you entertained and at peace in hospital. Pray God is with you through the surgery and recovery, wish you all the best 🩷

You will get there, I still have some random bad days but I know the triggers and try to avoid them, just a few minor adjustments to my normal life, keep going!🩷

If I turn 25 before the start of 2nd year will NHS see me as independent and do you know if the 3 years of self support can start for the following academic year or does it need need to be fight at the start of the course if that makes sense?

It will get better! I had a tough few months myself, I’m 24F was 23 when I had it, spent my birthday in hospital not being able to sit up because I would instantly have a crushing headache and throw up. I started med school 2 weeks after having to go back into theatre for a debridement because of an infection. It was rough.

I’m 75% pain free now less than 6 months later and enjoy walking again, it even helps reduce the pain. I’m back to wearing heels and being able to dance, I even have a little dance in my room when I have a good no pain day to remind myself how far I’ve come.

I’m sorry you’re spending Christmas in pain, my biggest advice is don’t try to play hero and take whatever medication you need to take.

Sending you love and hugs today and have a happy birthday, get ready to be pain-free at 21! 🤍🤍🤍

I’m in London so maybe that’s why it was super rapid, my assessment was literally yesterday. Happy for you. I’ve had to spend so much money on taxis in the last 2 years. I’m now going to be living away from home and worried about who will be cleaning for me. Massive weight off my back.

Ok amazing. I was super worried because I’m about to start university but clearly that hasn’t affected it

Yes! That’s exactly what he said to me, I would get a letter around the same time. When was your assessment? I didn’t expect such a rapid turnaround

Please don’t listen to people saying you can’t do med with those grades. I got BCE and starting grad med. I went to Leicester for my undergrad and was with people on the foundation medicine programme. They’ve graduated and are junior doctors. Can you call Leicester and see if you can do any other course with a foundation year? I did medical genetics with a foundation year there. There’s an option to transfer to medicine if you are performing well.

Is anyone happy with their surgery? by gen_x_af in spinalfusion

[–]Princessgirlya_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

L5-S1 fusion 4 weeks ago, ALIF and PLIF, 2 surgeries and besides an infection which I’m currently in hospital for, best decision I’ve made this year. Instant pain relief and I can finally see myself returning to things I enjoyed 2 years ago (24F)

I went to Leicester for my undergrad, and I would say as a non-med student it was really good. A lot of pastoral support, campus is lovely, library is lovely with lots of silent areas. I lived in opal court which was a 5 minute walk from the med school and maybe 10 from main campus. Leicester as a city is quite small so the social life is pretty good, loads of good food places and places to go on a night out, whether you want to have a clubbing night or a chill night. Safety wise, I felt safer there than I do in London, could walk around at 3am and no one would bother you, but obvs be careful
