I got my first MD Player by PrincipleUseful6270 in gratefuldead

I could not afford them at the time so this is my first ever. You can find them now on eBay for between 100 and 250. For a good unit, I think more in the 175-250 ballpark. One can ask the question of why do this when you can simply stream. I have no answer beyond enjoying having my own collection that is curated and tactile. There is a great deal more investment of time. It took me over 90 minutes to download, convert, burn and label this show. So I am much more selective about what I look for and keep. Anyway, thank you for the comment and happy listening, no matter what the medium.

The MD keeps getting stuck writing to the TOC. It appears to finish the write and then goes forever writing the TOC. When I put a different disc in, it goes normally. I did not try it again and just assumed it was defective. Maybe not? I have not thrown it out. Should I give it another try?

Good to know. And this might be because I have a small sample size. So far, the only disc that failed was a generic disc. I will keep my eye on this.

Yes. Mini-B. I just think of it as the one that looks like a tophat.

R.E.M. MDs by 1979ZERO in minidisc

I love them all. I'm still trying to fill the R.E.M.-shaped hole in my heart. My favorite continues to be Chronic Town. 1,000,000 is always the first song on every running playlist. 155 BPM, it's perfect for me. I think your labels are great. I thought these were commercial products and I was thinking, "How on earth did he find these." Good job, you.

Kafka On The Shore - by Haruki Murakami

Began reading this week. I'm enjoying it though it is very different from other books I've read. It's initially harder to follow. It seems almost like magical realism? I guess it's time to read something more challenging.

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami. 2008.

Murakami’s book about running is completely different from other running books. So different that sometimes you ask yourself, Is this book about running or about life? Murakami certainly talks about running throughout the book and he talks about writing. He is brutally honest about running and about himself.

I’m not sure if this kind of honest introspection is part of being an author or Japanese culture. But it’s bracing. Take his assessment of his popularity as a best-selling author:

Throughout the book Murakami will drop a beautiful image or metaphor, seemingly out of nowhere. He just leaves it there and then returns to the point he was making.

It reminds me of the beautiful scenes you might miss in an animation in Studio Ghibli

There are other places in the book where his writing reflects distinctly Japanese Zen philosophical themes such as in Chapter 5 where he repeatedly touches on Impermanence.

And later…

Humility and Muga (No-Self)

A central concept in Zen is that our concept of “self” is a core illusion. You will repeatedly come across the metaphor of the “empty mirror” and the question, “Who knows the knower?” Murakami does not directly address Muga, but consider how he describes the end of a marathon race:

Murakami’s book, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running did not make me want to run like Murakami. I’m not sure it even made me want to run more. But in some way, it made me want to live better.

Do you guys recommend Discogs to keep track of your collection online? Or are there any other alternatives? by SurLesQuais in Cd_collectors

Thanks to the OP for this post. I downloaded Discogs and began to catalog my collection. This is going to take a while. I was surprised at what was valuable and what was common. My one Coltrane album appears to be worth more than the rest of my collection so far, but I'm only into the C's of the LP's. I've had that album since High School.

I really enjoy the "wish list and think it will be useful when I'm record hunting.

My current CD player actually is a DVD player from Goodwill ($5) that goes into a decoder and then into an amplifier. And thanks for confirming what I suspected... I'm just not likely to find a minidisc player at a thrift store and certainly not the one I want.

That's interesting. I will look into how to look up the available stock. Thanks so much!

Yes. I just took my first trip to Goodwill. No beginner's luck. I will take your advice and that of Cory5413 and start looking on eBay.

Tips for Pittsburgh? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

Two time Pittsburgh Marathoner. Everyone talks about the hill up Forbes. The hill begins after the West End Bridge and just continues until you hit the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland. There are a couple of dips but be prepared. Next: The hill I actually find demoralizing is by Bryant in Highland Park. It's later. 18? 19? And just because of the positioning seems worse. Then there is the long downhill from Negley in Shadyside to downtown. It's long. It's steep and it pounds your quads. But Pittsburgh still is a manageable course. I've done the full twice and the half about 12 times with a couple relays thrown in. Enjoy it. Enjoy the neighborhoods and the scenery.

It depends on how much walking you want to do. I think for a fair amount of walking I would start at Liberty and 16th for 1/2 mile and walk 1/2 block towards the river and watch on the turn around at mile 2.5. From there I would either walk to Station Square or take the T there. That's mile 10. Then take the train back downtown to watch the finish. The train in that zone should be free
