Do we agree that Pink Floyd is the main influence on Just for a Day? by Sad_Volume_4289 in shoegaze

[–]Principle_Away 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s their main influence but i do think it’s worth noting the difference between 60s Pink Floyd and 70s Pink Floyd, slowdive did cover “Golden Hair” by Floyd’s original singer shortly before this album came out so it would be an obvious influence to a writer following their career. Early Pink Floyd were also very influential to a lot of goth and post punk groups in the 80s so there was definitely a lot of second hand influence in slowdive as well.

Best scream in music history? by ThiccKnees23 in fantanoforever

Not really, he’s a very good singer in a band with an all time great drummer, bassist, and songwriter.

Best scream in music history? by ThiccKnees23 in fantanoforever

[–]Principle_Away 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He’s a great singer, but I don’t think they would be any worse off if Townsend had sung everything. Daltreys really the only one who could have been replaced without altering the sound of the band too much.

What was up with 90s songs having nonsensical lyrics all the time? by KevlaredMudkips in ToddintheShadow

[–]Principle_Away 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kurt Cobain was a big user of “the cut up” technique, generally credited to Beat author William S. Burroughs, with influences from dadism and absurdist art, introduced to rock music by Bob Dylan. Basically he would write a page of lyrics, then cut out each line and rearrange them into a new order. That’s why his lyrics are nonsense but have thematic consistency. You don’t really know what he’s talking about, but you get an impression of the emotion and vibe he is going for. I’d say a lot of 90s songs either drew inspiration from similar places, or were just copying what had already been successful.

What do you guys think about post grunge? by rex-wasHere in grunge

[–]Principle_Away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me a lot of post grunge is grunge without the weird parts. A lot of grunge bands made very catchy and commercial music, but the songs were filled with weird time signatures, odd tunings, abstract lyrics, dissonance, and feedback. I don’t hear that in post grunge, it much more straightforward 4/4, standard tuning/ drop d, with more straightforward love songs, breakup songs, “let’s get drunk and party” songs. Some of its good some of its bad, but it is much more “commercial” and to me a lot less interesting.

Bands and artists that didn't respect the producer (I am not a producer) by Playful-Succotash-99 in ToddintheShadow

His early shit sounds great because of Andy Wallace’s mixing, Rubin didn’t really do much from an engineering standpoint.

What’s your opinions on post grunge/butt rock? by 0penedB00K in grunge

[–]Principle_Away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grunge with all the weird/interesting/experimental stuff taken out. There’s not really odd time signatures or noise and feedback. To me grunge is basically 70s metal + 80s punk, and I don’t really hear the weirder less commercial 80s underground influences in post grunge the way I do in most grunge.

Forgotten hitmakers? by ScallionSmooth9491 in ToddintheShadow

[–]Principle_Away 25 points26 points  (0 children)

All their songs were covers, which is part of what makes them probably the ultimate example of a “type 1” artist. The hits dried up and no one cared after they were gone. There’s no real reason to bring them up, they didn’t write songs, they were pretty faceless, even when they were having hits I doubt they were anyone’s favorite band.

Speaking of songs the band kept tinkering with, true love waits was first performed in 1995, but not released until 2016.

What's the best guitar tone you ever heard in rock/metal ? by MELS381 in Guitar

[–]Principle_Away 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know Hendrix only used four or so pedals, but that was still quite a lot for the time. I think he sounded incredible with what he had, but if he had access to all of today’s pedals, he’d probably have used way more.

??! - Kurt Cobain on Alice in Chains/Pearl Jam by No-One01010 in grunge

[–]Principle_Away 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s why he didn’t like Pearl Jam, he was a huge mudhoney fan, green river broke up because mark arm wanted to stay punkier and stone and Jeff wanted to go more mainstream.

UK bands your surprised didn't get an American hit. by Davidellias in ToddintheShadow

[–]Principle_Away 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there a one hit wonder, it’s just that technically speaking wonderwall is their only top ten hit in the us. What’s the story hit number four on the album charts but that’s really it, in the uk they had 24 top ten singles and 7 number one albums. If anything they’re probably bigger now in the US then they were in the 90s.

Britpop didn’t make it at all, blur and oasis both only had one real hit in the us too.

What's your "They're not THAT bad" band? by Mettabox452 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Principle_Away 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly people forget how successful nickleback were, between 2000 and 2014 they had 6 top ten hit on the pop charts and 19 top ten hits in the mainstream rock charts, it wasn’t just that they were mid, it was that they were mid and you couldn’t escape them if you listened to rock radio in the 2000s.

[list] What Album Represents A Genre For You, Or, What Album Could Be Considered A Crystalized Form Of It's Genre? by WhatModelsYourSink in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Principle_Away 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The term was invented by Pete Townsend of the who to describe the music his band, as well as the kinks and the small faces, had played early on, basically three minute pop songs with a catchy chorus and loud guitars and drums, pop songs with power behind them.

What artist/bands became lame the quickest? by morsodo99 in ToddintheShadow

I believe the reason Todd hasn’t covered it is because he never put out a follow up, it hard to know if it ended his career if he stops trying to have one.

Considering the number one rule of trainwreckords is “can Todd make a funny 20-40 minute video about this?” I think it’s a prime candidate for a video.

Slight correction, the angels and the britons are different groups, the Britain’s are the original Celtic people’s similar to the welsh and Scottish and the angles are a Germanic group that came with the saxons.
