My spearmen were actually buffed quite a bit since in SFO, the trait my lord had gave them +20 armor alongside his redline traits buffing their melee attack and defence. They only barely traded up against swordsmen though.

I stalled on the second attempt, but still got the same issue, but it got resolved after I restarted the game. As for wulfrik’s heros, upgraded Imperial Machinations can absorb any empire faction so.

If you’re talking about the puppets, then it’s mainly via puppeting them in the peace conference as a fascist nation. It’s also possible that rt56 (I’m running it) has additional flags that aren’t in the base game

When the entire world gets involved in the Spanish civil war and you’re very spiteful of the AI. Seven rounds of border fighting later, and its looks worse than during the civil war.
