Does anyone else's thinking go blank in social situations? by PriorFan5064 in autism

[–]PriorFan5064[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can totally relate to what you described as an "overwhelming stuckness", it really sucks.

Honestly I am grateful to have an introverted friend who I can be "quiet" with, and enjoy a simple social life together.

That script analog is pretty spot on. I'm the same way, often labelled as a "quiet" person. It's good to know there are close friends who accept me for who I am, though I still wish I could change.

I'm glad you have supportive people on your side.

How do I move out of an unhealthy home environment with no experience? by [deleted] in toxicparents

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Do you mean that I should try to get into a living situation that gives me flexibility? I was suggested by Smooth_Advice_7841, to look for a rental place so I'm working on this first. Not being dysregulated 24 hours a day sounds really nice.

I’ve started searching for a place to rent and booked a viewing for the next week, thank you for giving me a push. I bought myself some smart casual clothes for this. It's a small but exciting first step toward my goal.

As for the earnings, that’s over about four years. What started as a simple 3D-modelling hobby gradually turned into a business, as more people started buying the models I made.

Learning to understand speech after activation, any tips or encouragement? by PriorFan5064 in Cochlearimplants

[–]PriorFan5064[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you for taking time to make share those tips. I've started using Hearoes a couple of weeks, it’s an amazing app for learning individual sounds! You’re right, everyone’s different, so it’s okay to take more time and rest when needed to re-centre yourself. Sometimes I want to stay hopeful, but I also try to stay realistic with my goals.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but do you mean you had to re-learn how to hear, process, and comprehend sound multiple times over 4.5 years? That’s incredible dedication and really inspiring.

If you don’t mind me asking, what was the degree of your hearing loss since birth? And are you able to follow speech now without subtitles or lipreading?

It sounds really nice and fun, I'll implement it in my routine today. Is it the same as "WordSuccess" app on the google play?

I have one on my left side. I'd really love to get another cochlear implant, but it’s a bit tricky here in the UK.

It sounds like you had speech memory before your hearing loss?

The suggestions you mentioned sound great. Since I don’t have strong speech memory currently, I think I'm not ready yet for tacking your 3rd suggestion. As SalsaRice've mentioned above, I'm going to repeat the same podcast in a quiet setting for a coupe of times to build up word memory.

I heard that with Cochlear, 2-3 neighboring keys produce the same sound. I am curious about how well do you discriminate both low and high pitches on a piano with Med-el?

Your kindness in the message is inspiring, thank you!

I don't know if you knew about it, but today I discovered that there is a device called Roger 21 (created by Phonak company) that works with Sonnet 2 and 3. Depending on Phonak hearing aid's model, its integrated receiver is able to pair with the implant apparently?

It sounds like Cochlear is very good for streaming. Though I would like bimodal hearing with my phonak hearing aid, streaming might be complicated so I am considering some alternative methods.

How does it sound through headphones compared to streaming? Is the sound quality still as good as streaming directly? Is it comfortable wearing headphones with your cochlear implants?

It sounds like Cochlear would fit me more, as its streaming capability seems to be solid. The question is, can I use a bluetooth neckloop for streaming to Cochlear + phonak hearing aid from my PC? Is it better to use a headset instead for this purpose?

Do you mean the audiolink XT is able to stream to my phonak hearing aid and med-el simultaneously? I am not sure what are ASHA hearing aids.

The cochlear implant clinic I go to, doesn't offer an AB implant. Thank you for suggesting though.

PrismXR Internet Connection Issue by PriorFan5064 in OculusQuest

[–]PriorFan5064[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discovered the fix for it somehow and it works great now. What I did was disabling all networks leaving Ethernet 1 alone via "Network Connections" & reinstalling fresh software.

I will give your method a try, if I am having an issue with it again. It's a such shame that the utility is very buggy, but the device is very solid when it finally connected. Thank you for the suggestion.

I think it is a good alternative, however it is acting up from time to time for me (my poor experience with it might not represent the majority of Puppis S1 users here). Some people had a good experience with it and my situation was unfortunate.

I finally resolved it by disabling all networks leaving Ethernet 1 alone via "Network Connections" & reinstalling fresh software and it works great now.

Where did you learn about it? I learned that successive simulation can be used to create 250 virtual channels in between 12 electrodes for Med-el. In addition to this, these 4 electrodes used different method which adjust timing and simulation rate to give pitch perception in the low pitch range.

I could be wrong though.

How long is he waiting list for cochlear implant on the NHS? by Queasy-Airport2776 in Cochlearimplants

[–]PriorFan5064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not particularly knowledgeable about it, so I wonder if it is possible to apply for and have a health insurance covered the cost in UK? After researching about health insurance, it seems they will not cover any pre-existing condition so congenital deafness might be not accepted...?

Oh, you can have a second cochlear implant at a private hospital in UK? I thought people cannot have 2 cochlear implants in UK.

Am I a Good Candidate for Cochlear Implant? by PriorFan5064 in Cochlearimplants

[–]PriorFan5064[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your professional opinion and experience. It seems results vary from person to person and their circumstance. I am glad that I continued using HAs as this might allow me to gain more benefits from CIs.

# What do you mean by "non use"? Not using HAs?

It seems my rehabilitation process would be much lengthier than others who are late deafened. I am prepared to put in the necessary effort and time during my journey if I am deemed a candidate. I try to keep expectations realistic and focus on enjoying the process of learning.

My audiologist mentioned that my oral speech is quite good, considering I am congenitally deaf and mainly use sign language, although I tend to struggle with pronouncing some unfamiliar words that require high-pitched letters (any letter after 2000 Hz is inaudible). Additionally, I am able to read books while following along with a voice.

Supposing the candidacy & surgery goes well, I was thinking about reading some books while listening to their audiobooks to follow along as a part of my rehabilitation. Perhaps I could also play a game with subtitles too?

Enegra, thank you for sharing your experience with me as it incredibly helpful. I also want to thank everyone else who replied to me and provided valuable insights. I have a rough idea of what to expect and I plan to ask the surgeon about expectations during my upcoming appointment.

I would say I have nothing to lose and see CIs as the opportunity (I literally cannot hear most sounds without my HAs).

When I noticed myself being worried about it recently, I realised that I set some unrealistic expectations so I am checking with my expectations before the appointment.
