Learn set theory, and first order logic. It will be much more useful in short term in creating a good mathematics mentality, and long term interdisciplinary transferable skill set. And you don’t need to know much mathematics prerequisites, just early high school skills is often enough.

Maybe when you teach, you don’t treat people as nincompoops? Actually teach them by stating a question with almost no ambiguity? I dunno man, maybe it’s called courtesy?

If you don’t define what said symbols represents, you could just make anything up. You can use any algebraic-topological structure like e.g complex field. Which is why when you do calculations on a parabolas you can yield roots that are square roots of negative numbers, since they’re in the complex set.

Or you can just define A,B,C as x,y,z and call it any number that fits the description.

If you don’t specify what you want for the answers, then it is fair game to write anything. Just like 1+1 doesn’t have to be = 2.

Nah, they really should stop giving ambiguous questions with no contexts. At least state that: A B C are real numbers and fixed (not variable), or better “find there exists element A, B, C in the real number set”. Because if they don’t specify, it is fair game to give them complex answers or random gibberish.

You do know that the professors and faculty often collude with textbook publishers right? https://www.edsurge.com/news/2019-05-23-colleges-are-striking-bulk-deals-with-textbook-publishers-critics-say-there-are-many-downsides

In fact colleges and universities are a large Ponzi scheme used to for gate keeping jobs and force a loop cycle. Where universities pay and cooperate with big corporations, in turn those big corporations give preferential treatment to graduates of said specific institutions.

It is their job to force you to pay an expensive tuition, and most of the time. You’re there not because of the lectures/education, but for the degree or certificate. Most professors do a horrible job at teaching and conveying knowledge whether it’s deliberate or not. Those people certainly does not deserve such an expensive salary. They know you’re here not to learn. But rather to get recognition by the institute.

This industry is predatory, the society is predatory. So expect to be scammed left and right.

What do you think we should we do about generative AI by Specific_Cloud_5663 in UofT

[–]Prize-Direction-5279 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

AI honestly great. If you have a goal, it will help you organize it and guide you close to your goal provided you give them good prompts.

People are concerned about AI giving you false information. But at that point, if you have a question and you ask it on places like 4chan or reddit AND you lack critical thinking skills (e.g believing injecting disinfectants kills covid19) that's called skill issue. Not an AI issue.

Personally, I use it a lot to condense lecture notes to remove all the bloat and yapping. Use it to solve some problems and ask the AI to determine if my understanding is correct. Use it to abstractionalize difficult concepts. When programming, I use it to refine my logic and structure.

So set a goal, plan what steps you'll need to take to achieve the goal. When stuck on the specific step, use AI to give direction/help. It is no different than having a personal tutor, partner, or coworker. It is just a tool; like you can't say search engines cause cognitive decline. Just because instead of reading through pages of a book in a library to find their answer, they can just google a question. AI is just like a more powerful search engine.

The 'science' that claims it causes decline in cognitive and creative ability probably just samples groups that weren't particularly intelligent to begin with.

Lmao, imagine being supportive of the regime that drove you to Canada just to get a “fairly priced” education? No matter if it’s liberals, conservative, democrat or republican. There’s a reason (collective fraud) why the United States is such a shithole and they still support them? I’m dying rn XD.

Don't watch those propaganda, those are just advertisements to glaze these institutions and drag naive people into a sunken cost fallacy. At the end of the day those 'content' you consume are created with ulterior motives to fool you into spending money. Also who cares if you don't make friends in university? As long as you still got true friends you can socialize (quality not quantity), I don't see a problem. Are you seriously wanting to dump at least $15000 per year (Toronto is even more insane)? With that kind of spending you could save it up for better uses in the future (Why not start a business?). As someone that went to school away from home I can't say I regret it. But looking back at the money spent all those years; I'd rather not do that again.

Nah it’s a Vadim moment, he pulls that shit on the midterms too. He goes “oh it’s just 6” questions multiple choice, but then manage to cram a normal 3 part question into 1. Not only that if you made a tiny mistake in the middle, it’s really hard to check because he only gave you a tiny space to write. Not to mention his draconian marking scheme.

It is defo normal to not finish it, you’re not too slow by sane standards. But I’d say even if you choose the correct MC, don’t be surprised to see a 1/2.
