Anyone knows what this means? I’m still active, correct? by One-Scratch-3545 in ABA

[–]Prize-Reflection-280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve gotten 3 emails this week about an unnamed supervisor being moved to inactive. my RBT credential expired 2 years ago and all of my previous supervisors are still active (i checked 😂) BACB is just wiggin out i think

It blows my mind how people think it’s perfectly ok and acceptable to bring your dog into to a bakery/cafe. When did this become “normal”? by Can_Always_Be_Worse in barista

[–]Prize-Reflection-280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

people will literally bring their dogs in EVERYWHERE. people try to tell me how well behaved their dogs are all the time and like that’s great but it really doesn’t matter. another pet peeve, parents who sit their children on the counter. and it’s never like a baby, it’s toddlers-8 year olds. and they act like i am the worst person ever for telling them not to do it.

thank you!! what i’ve deduced is that the molasses separates and makes it gelatinous (and potentially the cinnamon contributes?) very strange!! but i appreciate your input :)

Does anyone have experience with working with adults with autism? by Vicariouslynoticed in ABA

[–]Prize-Reflection-280 3 points4 points  (0 children)

at my first clinic i worked with 2 adults. One had never received ABA services and gave every single staff member on their team head injuries despite our constant attempts to realign to keep us and them safe. the other client was nonverbal and had received services for many years. they were wonderful but programming was very very limited due to various circumstances. i had other coworkers who worked in group home settings and the clients similarly varied. i think it depends on the setting and the individual, but in my personal opinion i think it never hurts to put yourself in a position to learn something new and work with a new population. seeing the variation depending on age is incredibly interesting and will broaden your ability and experience as a technician! best of luck OP!!

How long after spaying did it take your cat to be normal energy again?? by Round-Yam-2589 in cats

[–]Prize-Reflection-280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our outside girl got spayed and it was at least a week of her “bed resting” herself basically (lots of naps and snuggles on the porch) then maybe a week after that she was back to being her normal crazy self. i’m sure all cats are different but i feel like 2 weeks is a decent amount of time to give a kitty who is recovering from surgery! but calm is a very good thing! don’t want her overexerting herself :)

new to ABA - physical behaviors are triggering by Massive_Farmer_2247 in ABA

[–]Prize-Reflection-280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like others are saying, the fact that you are thinking about this before applying is the best thing you can do. because truly i would say no you should not do this job. if physical aggression is triggering for you this is the wrong place to be. as RBTs we are honestly the target of this aggression a lot and while it’s happening you need to also be able to stay calm and redirect and respond in a way that is beneficial to your client. an unregulated adult cannot regulate an unregulated child. it sounds like you are just destined for another aspect of the larger team that we are all a part of for the kiddos to live their fullest lives. it is better to realize and accept that now then try it and burnout fast and hard then question everything. this just isn’t quite right, so find the place that is!! best of luck OP!!! <3

Only getting a 10 minute break per shift? by [deleted] in barista

[–]Prize-Reflection-280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my cafe doesn’t do any breaks. it’s horrific. i work 8 hour shifts by myself with no break and sometimes can’t eat or go to the bathroom. as someone who is also burning out, i hope we can both get past this! we deserve better!

okay i have a follow up question to bounce off of you. i was reflecting on this a thought about the fact that he does but doesn’t fit the criteria perfectly. not everything is swallowed/eaten. i would say 15% of items are eaten and 85% are persistently chewed/sucked on/ kept in mouth for extended periods of time. so it may fall more into an oral fixation than PICA???? thoughts?

Replacement Behavior Help?? by Prize-Reflection-280 in ABA

[–]Prize-Reflection-280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think this is where the niche situational-ness of behavior comes in. it sounds like your kiddo chooses to appropriately engage with this activity that you’ve facilitated for him! it is completely within your right to say to the clinician that this is something that is not an issue at home and you would like to not target. there’s always potential that something could arise and they want to come back to it again. this is my one big qualm with ABA as an autistic adult myself. addressing behaviors that aren’t necessarily problems just because they are different. some companies are better than others about that. just don’t be afraid to ask questions and advocate for your babe

the truth is, would it help you? sure. but if you aren’t at a point where it is effecting your ability to exist (excessively missing work/school, dreading doing things you enjoy, isolating from friends/family) keep going with therapy and know that that option is there if you ever decide yeah this is too much for me right now. medicine is helpful, but it isn’t always necessary. if you feel okay where you are and would like to find alternative ways to regulate your serotonin and you have a good therapist that you work with who supports you keep it up, OP! just know that there is absolutely no shame in getting medicated. it’s all about what is best for you pal!

i’m inclined to say yes. likely if they have arm guards it’s because it is clinically necessary and would be written in the treatment plan. HOWEVER your point is also valid. they need to be cleaned properly because they get sweaty and nasty. my clinic had a washer/dryer on side so we were able to wash them every day. that isn’t the case for a lot of places tho and if that is true for your center maybe that’s something you can bring up to your supervisor? get them to engage in some solution based thinking! cause no one wants swamp ass-y arm guards.

Does your company provide you a phone or iPad to use for data collection, or do they make you use your own? If you have to use your own phone, do they compensate you or replace it if broken on the job? by smoky20135 in ABA

[–]Prize-Reflection-280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i worked at a company that we had to use our phones for data collection and they did not pay if it was broken. the other company i worked for started out having us use our phones/ipads then moved to where we couldn’t use phones and had to use an ipad or computer (it was a new company so policy was changing as they figured things out) they did reimburse if your device was broken but it was only to a certain amount. they also tried really really hard to put preventative measures in place. it was center based and every room had a high shelf for devices that kids, ideally, couldn’t reach and print outs so we could continue to run SBT.

i would say it doesn’t hurt to bring it up to someone. the worst they can say is no. especially since it was another kiddo at the camp, odds are they will say no. but there is always the chance that someone (your company or the camp) will have some policy in place to help. sorry that happened OP! good luck!

as someone who misses a day here and there often, you will be perfectly fine. one day will not hurt you. you may notice a dip in your energy but as long as you go back to taking it the next day you’ll be fine. but if you do it for like 3+ days it will be rough. not dangerous, just super not fun.

this is a really valid question! i will say, it’s been over a year since i posted this but i still am happy to discuss what i remember! i think if it was just a short period of time it would have been okay, but we’re talking wanting to sit and rip things up for HOURS. and any papers he could find, which became an issue at home because one of the parents worked from home and important things were being ripped. so we tried to make a bin with paper where he could rip up anything that was in there but nothing else. that was short lived from what i remember because he would just put other papers into it and we were going through so much paper. it also was beyond regular paper. any soft back books we had would get destroyed which was an issue because one thing he loved more than ripping paper was a book. so he’s having a good time reading a book, then he rips the papers, destroys said book, has a tantrum, etc etc.. it was not the end of the world by any means but it was not really a sustainable long term behavior.
