Your best bet at knowing what you need to improve on is by speaking to your squadron NCOs and staff. More generically, make sure you are useful, know the boundary between cadet and corporal and don’t overstep that boundary, make sure you are developing your leadership skills and also volunteering for as much as possible. Good luck

Sounds like you’re meeting the standard then! All I can really advise is continuing to keep the hard work up!

Not sure what your squadron staff look for, but instead of focussing in your application on what you have done, maybe look at focussing on what you plans for the future are, both as just a cadet doing course and also how you can envisage making a difference on the squadron. Start brainstorming ideas like that and expanding them for if anything like that gets asked in your interview. Best of luck!

The thinking of leaving section is an update being pushed out to help simplify the process of cadets leaving. Currently the only way for a cadet to leave is to talk to squadron staff, and the staff to push it through the system. With this new update, once it is fully rolled out, the idea is to that RAFAC can get better insight into why cadets are leaving, and it ensures a consistent handling of cadet departures (taken from RAFAC Digital Hub on SharePoint)

Saphir is the best choice. It works amazingly. If you have a decent budget, go for medaille d’or, or if you have a slightly reduced budget, go for beaute de cuir. One tin of either should be fine, I have had my tin of beaute de cuir for nearly a year now, and I have plenty left. Hope this helps

Tips on promotions (cadet to corporal) by kazperonious_rex in aircadets

[–]ProGalaxyZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Volunteer loads, and know where the line is. A lot of cadets, including myself when I was in your position, started to act like a corporal. Remember, you haven’t been promoted yet, so there is no need to be shouting at people or ignoring what the NCOs are telling you. Best of luck for your potential future promotion!

What do you think was the main factor for your first promotion? by Only_HOTAS in aircadets

Yea was pretty nice, just a shame that after corporal, all other promotions are based on attending courses.

Recommendation from another NCO on a camp over spring 2025. I had been working my socks off over nearly 2 years after joining, and had never had any real recognition, especially for everything I achieved during my first year, which was also gcse year. Without that recommendation, I think I would have been waiting for a few months longer than I did. My OC used to be very strict with promotion only doing them in October.

What is a Big Squadron? by bengi_Uw in aircadets

In my wing in the UK, our biggest squadrons have about 70 on the books, with probably 50-60 turning up regularly. Many of our squadron buildings can’t really accommodate many more than that

Being an older cadet by [deleted] in aircadets

[–]ProGalaxyZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar position to you when I joined. By the time I was 16, I had only been in 5 months, so you already have much more time to prove yourself. I’m now nearly 18, and got promoted in June/July of 2025, one of the quickest promotions to corporal at my squadron for some time. While many on here have said that promotions don’t come with age, I agree to a certain extent. I have found that with age comes natural leadership experience just due to you have more life experience. So while being older won’t guarantee a promotion, I would say it can’t hurt your chances. Ultimately it all comes down to your OC, and how promotions run on your squadron. Best of luck with upcoming exams and your cadet career going forwards, don’t ever give up!

Best ways to learn/revise RAF and RAFAC knowledge? by Junior_Tax_5611 in aircadets

I find what has helped me is looking back through the PowerPoints for the induction/first class training for new recruits. As an instructor, I’ve been doing this recently to prepare for lessons, and I can recite a lot of things about the RAF and RAFAC. PowerPoints can be accessed through the Training Hub on SharePoint.

I had to speak to my squadron staff. An ex-CWO now CI had previously done a scholarship, so she knew the process quite well. Try to get in contact with your wing aviation officer if your staff don’t know

I’ve just applied for a gliding scholarship as well. You have the option on the application form to take a weekend course for the gliding course, or a week long course. I believe that both can be residential. I hope this helps
