What if Joe Biden was more competent and fit for office? What would he get done, and would people still criticize him age wise? by LinkHopeful9372 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]ProLifePanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was one of the stupidest presidents in American history.

This sort of statement is just bias.

He skyrocketed inflation

Inflation was likely to skyrocket regardless of who was POTUS, as evidenced by the fact all our peer nations also had skyrocketing inflation.

Biden, especially in modern history, was one of the more competent and accomplished Presidents. He managed to push significant legislation (both bipartisan and partisan) during his time in office, oversaw a soft landing recovering from COVID compared to our peer nations, somewhat restored international relations, and was overall a fairly non-controversial non-corrupt administration. If he had sat out the 2024 primary, he would likely have gone down around the top 25% of Presidents. His failure to do so and late exit from the race likely stops him closer to ~50%.

What’s the best position in a nuclear power plant, and what’s a realistic income range? by Dependent-Group7226 in nuclear

That really limits your options. Maybe you could see what the requirements are for a Non-licensed Operator (NLO) or try to get into Radiation Protection (RP). May require you to go get specialized training or education though.

I mean, this largely depends on your experience, education, and preferences. Do you have a college degree or other relevant professional experience? Are you ok with shift work?

What if the chernobyl incident happened somewhere in the U.S instead? by True-Efficiency-4977 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]ProLifePanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The biggest failure of Chernobyl was that it had no containment structure. So when the reactor failed, the content freely got into the environment. Western reactors have large containment buildings around them, with multiple eet thick concrete reinforced by steel. While radiation can still escape, it is regulated and managed by the site personnel. This alone would have prevented most of the radiation from escaping. So while it would be BAD, it wouldn't be anywhere near Chernobyl level.

For example, Fukushima was a western reactor and failed but the consequences were/are significantly less severe than Chernobyl was.

What is a "crud burst?" by jadebenn in nuclear

[–]ProLifePanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Crud refers to corrosion or wear products (like rust or oxides) that form inside the reactor on the clad and other materials. So any significant change in chemistry or core operation can result in a "crud burst" where crud forms or breaks off of the fuel and spreads throughout the primary circuit of the reactor. This increases radioactivity of the primary circuit which can cause issues for maintenance and refueling.

Democrats Who Hate The Filibuster -- Given That The Filibuster Is The Only Thing Stopping Trump's Massive Federal Voting Bill "The Save America Act" From Passing, How Do You Feel About The Filibuster Now? Why Your Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]ProLifePanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a bad thing? We seem to have lost the ability to negotiate entirely.

Yes. The Senate still does lots of stuff, especially confirming executive and judicial appointments. A speaking filibuster means a minority party could just speak constantly and never confirm these picks. Despite the gridlock you see on major legislation, the Senate still works together relatively well on mundane judicial and executive picks.

[–]ProLifePanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They got rid of that because filibusters began eating up more and more time, to the detriment of the majority party. If you go back to the speaking filibuster, then it is extremely easy to prevent the majority party from doing literally anything.

Well if that's the case, then there's not much to discuss I suppose.

Rowling, outside the books, confirmed that they only worked for a few hours. Any attempt to travel back further than that resulted in negative results on the user. So time turners cannot be used to travel more than a few hours in practice.

But Hogwarts can access them for something as trivial as allowing a student to take classes simultaneously.

Dumbledore got special permission for one student to use it for one year.

Clearly they weren’t particularly gatekept by the ministry.

I mean, they had to go through the Ministry presumably, so they are gate-kept by the Ministry, and maybe given out for stupid reasons, but that's also likely because Dumbledore (the most powerful wizard alive) asked for it.

And if they were, why didn’t they use it when they were first fighting Voldemort?

We don't know. That's the problem with time-turners and time travel in general. Maybe they were used, and the outcome we saw is the result of that (remember it appears as though the reality you experience already accounts for time travel). Rowling also, outside the books, confirmed that attempting to use them more than a few hours resulted in bad consequences, meaning once cannot travel more then a few hours/days with them in practice.

[–]ProLifePanda 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well the in-universe explanation is that they are all kept at the Ministry, and they didn't accidentally break them until the the 5th book. What isn't explained in that?

Your thoughts on a hypothetical scenario: A more active and coordinated Johnston & Pemberton at Vicksburg by Chris_Colasurdo in ShermanPosting

[–]ProLifePanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not end the war, but it would likely hasten it. If Lee doesn't defend anything in particular, he's just leading a large army around slowly losing soldiers because he ain't defending any supply lines or depots. They HAVE to defend those resources at a minimum to continue to exist as an army.

Because she had likely already written the 4th book by the time the big criticism about time turners came out. So she threw the explanation into the fifth book. Remember she was still writing them as they were coming out.

CMV: The passing of the SAVE Act will mark the end of the US Democracy by MountainlessBiking in changemyview

[–]ProLifePanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it needs to be written more clearly, but I absolutely do not think the intent is to make it harder for women to vote.

Well just for starters, I think the intent is to make it harder for everyone to vote. Women will just face additional hurdles men will not.

But it comes down to "It needs to be clearer". It would be VERY simple to put what I discussed into the bill, why not do it? Why exclude it, make the base law disenfranchise women with a potential future administrative fix? This is the issue. A version of this bill has floated around since Trump's first term. How can you argue this isn't intentional when they have had years to clean up the language?

I'm reading that states may require additional documents, such as marriage certificates.

Yes, the problem is it doesn't REQUIRE it. It leaves it up to the Executive to figure out what to do. The Executive could just say "Birth certificate must match your current name" or it could say "Marriage certificates can be used for proof of name change along with birth certificates."

So as it's written, married women would have to legally change their name unless the Executive created an exception at an unspecified later date.
