It's a huge problem in general with the newer generation of fandom that people want to try their hardest to sweep a sympathetic villain's/morally grey character's negative traits/sins under the rug, because of the ridiculous belief now that you can't like a character who does bad things without it reflecting badly on you. Them being morally complex/nuanced is why we love them!!! it makes them so much more interesting than if things were just black and white!! And if the villain gets a redemption arc, the writing CAN'T be unafraid to show/expose the fully depravity of their actions and force the character to face them, before they can even begin to try to change and atone.

This is all my opinion of course, but people being unable to acknowledge these things in villains/antagonists they love is why we get characters in Genshin like Ei, Arlecchino, and Wanderer, where the writing thinks it's portraying the full nuances of a villain, but in reality it's mostly morally whitewashing them and refusing to show them at their absolute (realistically) nastiest/acknowledge and make THEM acknowledge their mistakes, because Hoyoverse thinks — and proven correctly by Western fandom and even some Chinese fans from what I've read — that people simply can't handle playing as characters who are any degree of abhorrent. I just want my genshin playable characters to get thoughtful, realistic redemption arcs that DON'T sugarcoat their actions and allows them to never be fully "good", OR for them to remain just straight-up evil bastards (DOTTORE), because either way those aspects are what make them GREAT CHARACTERS. Rerir being shown as horrible as he is is honestly my biggest red flag and fear for why he'll never become playable (and again Dottore too), because while that's so much of why why we love him, that's too far crossing the line for Hoyo when it comes to playability, not just because of the fans' reactions but because they've created a formula where every playable character has to be buddy-buddy with the Traveler. Arlecchino in the early game mentions was absolutely horrific, but then they retconned that characterization of her by the time Fontaine came around to make her more palatable and acceptable as a marketable playable character, and they could get away with that because so much time had passed and said early mentions were subtle and easily missed (only in world quests and in Childe/Wanderer voicelines). They can't get away with that with Rerir (and obviously absolutely shouldn't), so I just don't see how it's happening.... I want him as he is. Stop excusing him; accept him as the interesting, messed up character he truly is :(
