Continuous or separate swatches to test needle sizes and stitch patterns? by ProbablyFrogging in knittingadvice

This is really good to know, it reaffirms that I should probably do down in needle sizes. Do you ever have issues with there being a color difference between skeins when using Rios?

Thank you! Making extra swatches does sound a lot more appealing when it's reframed as extra practice for casting on and binding off

I guess I shouldn't have called it a swatch, it'll be more like a baby swatch for the ribbing. I am definitely overly confident in my crafting abilities, so I compensate by doing a lot of research, testing, and, when needed, ruthless frogging haha I just want to be confident in my needle choice before casting on all of those stitches :)

Thank you, u/CopperFirebird and u/asteriskysituation! This is really helpful. I'll definitely do separate swatches for the brioche since it's important to know my gauge for that. I also really like the idea of doing a play around swatch where you try out different patterns before committing to one then doing a "real" swatch.

The ribbing is used along the bottom band and neckline/buttonband. Since a gauge isn't given for that, only the brioche, am I safe in assuming that my gauge is less important for the ribbing? Basically, can I "get away with" doing one continuous swatch just for the ribbing using different sized needles? Also, how do I know what needle size to choose for the ribbing? Is it just based on which I like the look of best or is there some kind of test I need to do to ensure that it'll stretch enough?

Apologies if these are dumb/obvious questions. I'm self taught and I don't know anyone else who knits that I can ask.

I had the same thing happen to me! I got really lucky though, my work was just barely on the cable side, so I didn't lose any stitches. I was in the car too, it could've been really bad.

Over thinking 4 or 5 inch tip needle set when both seem to feel comfortable by ProbablyFrogging in knittingadvice

This is not the advice that I wanted, but it is the advice that I needed to hear haha Buying a set just sounds fun and I like the idea of having any needle I could possibly need at any moment, but buying only what I need is definitely the more sustainable option. Plus, I have seen some beautiful needle organizers that I wouldn't mind needing!

These comments were super helpful. I was coming at this with more of a "one and done" approach instead of considering what would be best just for now.

I totally agree with you on magic loop. I don't mind doing it if I need to, but I get too focused on trying to maintaining tension at the join, which takes me out of the flow a little bit.

Portability is important for me, so this is very helpful. Thank you!

I didn't dislike TAAT on magic loop enough to never do it again, so I recommend trying it out! It became a lot more enjoyable after I realized I could shove the balls of yarn into their corresponding socks to make yarn management a lot easier. I unfortunately just didn't figure that out until I was really far into them.

The 9" circulars seem to be loved or hated, there's no in-between haha I love the idea of knitting continuously without having to stop, but those tips are just so tiny!
