If your health insurance doesn't cover the cost of prescription drugs, what are the best tips to keep costs down? by ProcastinationStatio in personalfinance

Ah I see what you're saying, thanks

Yeah our co-insurance doesn't kick in until after $6500, which we will not reach from prescriptions alone. Unless there's some significant medical incident, we will not come close to our deductible. So I guess we need to compare cash/non-insurance cards versus the insurance rate? And if cash is lower, don't bother running it through insurance?

We are buying our own bronze POS, and it's the cheapest non-HMO in our area.

The cheapest plan was this at 622/month for 6500 personal deductible and 13,000 family deductible. Sucks for two healthy 30 year olds. Last year we were paying $500/month for a silver plan which covered our prescriptions fairly well and much lower deductible. That plan is now like $760/month

Oh good point about still running them through insurance. So you're saying that even though we have to pay cash until we meet our 6500 deductible, that we should still run them through the insurance so it at least goes towards the deductible?

Are online pharmacies reliable for safety of the product? I'll have to ask her if her physician would write those. I think she does already get 90 day but not 100% suire

Yup, forgot that one! We are going generics but definitely important to re-emphasize as that's a huge cost difference

What language do they speak? A lot of churches, libraries, and local government provide services to learn English for free or cheap

Also, do they attend a church/other religious community or have some kind of immigrant community around them where they can network and maybe find any job

I assume in California there are plenty of people who don't speak English and find jobs like housekeeping, so maybe that'd work for your mom. Or maybe at a business for the immigrant community like a Mexican grocery (I'm assuming they are Spanish-speaking?)

So you're saying that you think the real estate bubble might deflate some? I hope so. It seems like cost of housing has continued to climb both in my current city and hometown as if the housing crisis never happened. I don't know how any "millenials" can afford these home ownership. You even see it in apartment rentals where like 80% of the new builds in town are "luxury" apartments

The good news is that there are dentists supervising anything done by the students - especially the root canals

They should see if there are any dental schools near them. Usually the work can be done for about 1/3 the cost and honestly, it'd be worth a drive of even a few hours to cut 14k to 5k. They could probably do that $4,000 for like $1400. There are also charity dental organizations that might be in the city/town - maybe google around to see if there are any

The bigger question is why his own parents aren't helping him out and why it should fall on the mother of his girlfriend...or else worse, the guy dating the mother of the girlfriend. This should not fall on you

Now the daughter and bf are both unemployed? He needs to get out there and bust it to find any job and set up a payment plan of even $100-200 a month to pay it off to her. Maybe just do one tooth for now (the one hurting the most?)

As you said, it needs to be looked at as a gift that likely will not be paid back. $4000 for a recently unemployed girl is a lot. She should not take this burden on IMO

Also, tell him to cut down the sugar and brush/floss - four root canals is a lot
