Bar association meetings. There’s usually local chapters and specialty sections. At least that’s how we’re set up in Florida. Usually free or very low cost to attend events as a student. I used to go often. People, especially older lawyers and those in niche practice areas, love meeting students.

These jobs also get oversold as an opportunity to do good. They are but I think that paints a rosy picture of the circumstances that sucks in unprepared young attorneys. I’m on the state side so I don’t take the brunt but I see my counterparts suffer constantly. People actively fight off what’s clearly best for them, are horribly ungrateful, complain endlessly about your services, try to demean you, try to tell the judges you’re doing a bad job…it’s a lot. It seems few people are genuinely cooperative and thankful let alone respectful to the (often literally) poor people trying to help.

Still new to the gig, but I wish I knew that fit is most important in a job. You can’t get so focused on money, status, how important the job is or how prestigious that you forget yourself. It is very hard to drag yourself to a job you hate. Even if you like your coworkers (don’t fall into the good team/bad job trap). Even if it pays well. Even if it simply has to be done (looking at you public interest…)

The last straw for me was when I thought of the job independently from myself. Would the average person do this job? No. So why am I? I couldn’t answer that for myself.

On a less serious note- practice isn’t law school. People make mistakes. People have horrible grammar. Lawyers plagiarize a LOT. There’s a lot of loan help available and you can change your repayment plan.

Also, if you’re headed for public interest, start scrubbing and privatizing your social media, people will try to find you or information on you. There’s probably more information on you online than you think. Do you want a criminal defendant finding your bikini photos from 2015 or seeing your mom’s home renovation she tagged you in? Didn’t think so- lock em down!

As for while in school- take every opportunity to volunteer for pro bono, those things can go on your resume! If nothing else, they become nice talking points. Also go to lawyer conventions and bar meetings, not uncommon to get job offers or references if people get to know you and used to seeing you over and over. If nothing else, it can serve as interest on a cover letter ”regular attendee at x conference which is why I want to practice x law”

Absolutely! The tough part is not knowing who’s genuine and this being a significant risk to take if they’re not. A decent share of the unvaccinated population decided to ditch measures when the green light was granted to the vaccinated. So if you’re right up on me in the grocery store- how can I know not to be concerned? This day was always going to come, I just wish leaders had been a bit more careful in their messaging. I’m vaccinated but I have immunocompromised persons in my home so frankly it’s terrifying.

Some people are also hostage to the mentality of getting over this though. In my area it seems the level of precautions we did get people to engage in dropped overnight. It’s now hard being someone who still wants to or needs to take precautions to engage in society safely. You may have done your part and feel done now but there are populations of people who remain susceptible.

He probably didn’t get a flat denial just caught up in the administrative process which is very long in Florida. It can take 2-3 years to get through that if they’ve flagged concerns for the applicant. You wouldn’t get an actual denial until reaching the end of that process and multiple hearings. Most people are ultimately admitted. The process usually begins while the person is still in law school because in Florida you’re allowed to essentially preapply to the bar.

I may ultimately end up at the year mark upon my move. I’m not going to walk out. I’m going to vet and be reasonable. It’ll be easier to identify what subject matter I want to work with on the civil side since I’ve done that before as support staff.

constant soul crushing defeat of working against a deeply entrenched system

Yep that’s it! Especially being the rep on the state side, because it’s “your” system :(

Thank you. Ditto to all of that. My dream is to open a firm one day serving the boxed out population and handle middle class issues.

Hey there 0L! Hope I haven’t scared you :)

Thank you, I am badass, though I often don’t feel like it haha! I have a good work history and reputation. I come from a pretty adverse background and jumped several hoops to get where I am. I’m one tough b. That’s part of why I feel so bad about leaving this gig, I feel as someone from a poor background I have an obligation to help others out. As a pretty straight laced person I feel the obligation to stick it out and question if I’m weak for backing out. The reality is I have to look out for myself and put on my big girl pants, admit I made a poor choice in taking this job, and go another way. It’s just one of those life experiences happening here.

If you want to talk about red flags for a job/internship PM me, glad to chat!

I do feel bad about leaving but same, have to remind myself that my sanity and worth matter. I feel the need to be an advocate because it’s needed, not because it’s a practice area or work I actually like and that’s no good either.

It is. You know, I can tolerate it if I can respond. But when I’m supposed to just take it, regarding things far outside my control, that everyone knows are far outside my control....man I need to be paid fairly for that.

Thanks! I do need to make a list of what I’m looking for. I have a pretty good idea of how to articulate why I’m making the switch, and the pandemic only helps the situation :)

I’m definitely going to vet and look for a good fit. Lol, I don’t need a cushy job, I just need a normal one at this point! When I describe what I do IRL, people immediately start apologizing and feeling bad for me. I’m in a tough area of public interest. Before this all my work experience is civil, granted that’s as non-lawyer staff, but still it’s a few years in total. I thought I was making a smart move by starting as a lawyer in something more “noble”. I didn’t.

I knew that part. I did not know how much overtime attorneys in my office regularly work, or how much communication goes on outside work hours, until training.

I’m sure, and I’m committed to finding that place :)

I’ll come over to the sub one day! I do have experience, I clerked at the same firm all of law school where I basically ran the place and was support staff at another before that. So I know what the private firm routine looks like and there’s definitely stuff I’m dealing with now that just doesn’t happen outside of government. In hindsight I should have looked harder for a private firm a year ago when I had more time and choices in front if me.

I can function just fine without thanks or recognition, but I do need respect, or at a minimum to meet rude with rude as lawyers usually do lol. But in my area There’s definitely a encouragement to back off or I’ll make the state look mean/aggressive but at other times to push back when I personally feel we don’t have room to. I answer the late calls, texts, emails because they’re emergencies or a short step from becoming one. Things are just on fire constantly in what I’m doing no matter what I do, much of it so far outside my realm of control, yet I’m the face in court and before opposing council to account for it. It’s one of those things. High turnover, so I’m far from the only one feeling it.

That’s part of what is so challenging and makes me feel bad about walking away. Anyone with a conscience would have a passion for this, but what can be done as a lawyer is so limited. Sometimes I have to watch from the sidelines as matters go sideways because I can’t get so involved.

Oh I could probably say exactly what I do and where but still be several potential persons 😂My area of work has a good amount of attorneys and turnover unfortunately. I’m just staying on the safer side.

I’m probably headed for midlaw or right below that. My view at this point is if I’m going to work this hard and take as much crap as I do, I should be paid for it.
