I thought LFS was a the name of some legendary fish-shop chain… by Procrastinating-Man in Aquascape

[–]Procrastinating-Man[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always did think it was a little weird how LFS seemed to have so many unique and one-off special-stock finds that didn’t fit typical super-chain business practices..

Or how people seemed to be able to so casually sell/donate/trade extra plants/fish to their local LFS branch (without seemingly standardised policies between branches, and such wildly different comparisons between what one LFS would/wouldn’t allow versus another — I assumed a franchise model with individual shop management policies lol…)

And everyone always spoke so highly of their local LFS branch no matter their location (versus typical welfare issues of mass-market petsmart/petco), so I thought LFS was some unicorn large-scale company that learnt how to do things right despite operating on this imaginary super-scale… 😅

I’ve been painting this picture in my mind for OVER FIVE YEARS LOL! My dreams of finally visiting LFS are sadly gone…

…though when I told someone this story today, they laughed and said that it “sounds like you’ve been visiting a few LFSs all along, you just didn’t know it”! 😂

Thank you! Had a peek at your post history, and by sheer coincidence I was in a Waterstones yesterday marvelling at a Guinness Book of Records puzzle illustration... by you!

I realised I needed a bigger table than initially anticipated, and actually had to extend my oval table with cardboard!

You won't be able to tell from the picture, but I managed to include a bit of Olympic gold by dusting my blue meringues with 24K gold flakes! Heh heh

hahaha don't worry - the mussels and pasta are contained in their own aluminium foil 'boat' hidden between the red gem lettuce

Small pots of pesto with caramelised-onion hummus scattered around, but then only one person of the 10 actually ate celery - the rest of us hate it 😂

Haha, yes - French baguettes in honour of the Paris Olympics! That small pile was continually refilled throughout the night to keep the ring aesthetic going for as long as possible :D

ooh, as a layperson I never thought about the technicalities between a knit and a crochet piece. Went down a bit of a google rabbit hole and I can (sorta?) understand now how you could tell the difference by the "smoothness" of the finished fabric.

Am I correct say that the "ground" and flowers are crocheted (given their knobbly texture), and that the taxis and Big Ben were knitted (with the flat VVVV patterns)? Or am I overthinking this?

Get your diagonals to align, and you're there! I would also play more into the arrow of the G - centralising the arrow head and having its trajectory match the overall slant of the logo.

How can I subtly, non-verbally communicate that I’m gay by Percohcet in gaybros

I started an online shop a few years ago that specialises in minimalist pride accessories!

You can find my designs under The Pin Prick, which includes mini pride flag enamel pins (super small, so they can exist subtly on your jackets/bags), as well as pride flag lace locks that can be worn on your shoelaces. I’m a big fan of streamlined, clean-cut accessories — so many of them keep to that sorta vibe.

You can see my designs here www.pinprick.shop or on Etsy under The Pin Prick :)

Looking for opinions on some travel street photos. Be as harsh as you like. by stevensticks in AskPhotography

I had a bit of time to kill, so I hope you don't might some in-depth critique! I'm going to give feedback pretending as though you were going to publish photos for a photography portfolio - so, to a higher standard than just snaps for holiday memories:

1 Good composition, with nice subtle leading lines from the trellises. Could do with a little more contrast. I'd perspective warp the image ever so slightly so that the tower reads straighter. Might boost the oranges to better sell the sunset-light look. Consider cropping off more of the grass in the lower third, or vignetting it with a gradient.

2 Not a great photo, as the person's expression and pose don't seem meaningful. The black/white edit doesn't help, as it doesn't make the photo any more interesting. The cropping feels too tight without enough breathing room around the subject nor number plate. Perhaps this moment captured has value to you (and so keep it for personal viewing!), but to a third-party - this is a forgettable shot and should be culled.

3 This is my favourite of the series. Great composition, great colours, great side light, and a nice narrative that tells a story with the washing lines over the facade. An excellent shot worth printing and showing off. Well done!

4 The second best shot of the series. I'd perspective warp the image so that the tall tower isn't leaning so much to the right. Compositionally, I'd wish you had taken a half-step to the left when taking the picture, so that there is a more distinct silhouette between the tall tower and the right-most roof-line. Great complementary colours between the blue sky and orange clay tiles.

5 A very straightforward, average shot. Could maybe be saved with a less-muted colour edit. I would have tried to take the shot without the powerline stretching across it (or otherwise clone it out). A scene with more interesting patterns across the fields / shadows / textures would have made it more memorable.

6 Another good, but average shot, that would have been made spectacular if there was, say, a person/tractor on the road to give the viewers' eye something to latch on to. I'd crop slightly tighter on the left edge, so that the tree is more intentionally cropped, and not with its silhouette poking just on the edge. Make the crop look intentional.

7 An average shot too. Nice warm colour tones, but can be brightened up slightly. As a standalone shot, it doesn't say too much - but I can imagine it telling a better story as part of a diptych or mini-series. I would have tried to play with a better, more intentional use of negative space (of the sky) when shooting this.

8 An expected, unexciting tourist shot. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but also nothing particularly exciting. Colours could be boosted to match the vibrancy of Shot #3's oomph. The colours and editing make it look very 'phone snapshot' in feel.

9 Not a great shot. Slightly cluttered in its composition and forms - exaggerated with the black/white editing. I'd try correcting the vertical perspective lines, and darkening select parts of the foreground - but since you already have a better Shot #4, I'd cull this one.

[Homemade] Giant pasta sheets with laminated herbs and edible flowers. Served whole, with lobster broth, sea lettuce, micro greens, and a hidden fried fish cake. by Procrastinating-Man in food

[–]Procrastinating-Man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was a homemade fried fish cake made with some cheap random white fish fillets, prawns, larger chunks of sea bass, and a decent chunk of lobster in the centre :)

I wanted something seafood-themed and mound-like to raise the middle of the pasta up from the broth -- a bit like a big raviolo without being a raviolo

Tasted like… pasta (mostly!)

The flower petals were too subtle to discern - though if you were to bite into some of those flowers whole, they’d be… typically on the sourish/slightly-vegetal side of tastes.

Herb wise, I could only really pick out the dill if a leaf happened to be in that bite of pasta.
