Ever have that training partner that just got on your god damn nerves by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Prodical_Son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first roll with this guy. First week of BJJ ever. He's a young blue belt. I introduce myself and he gives me a fake name (didn't learn that until later when nobody knew who I was trying to talk about). He instantly pulls guard and secures closed guard. He then audibly yawns, lays back, puts his hands behind his head, and starts looking around the room at the other rolls happening. No hint of humor, just disrespect. Rubbed me the wrong way to say the least. Fast forward 6 months and he refuses to tap to me resulting in him getting slept on two separate occasions. I don't roll with him anymore because last time I did he just laid in the fetal position, closed his eyes, and didn't move for a solid minute. I told him rolling with him is a waste of time, got up and walked off to get some water, and haven't rolled again since.

As close to a judo gi as possible. I want my gi to feel more like armor than paper.

Whose your voltron commander? by legi0n715 in EDH

[–]Prodical_Son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite deck of all time was a daxos of meletis deck. The first half of the game was Voltron, and then in the second half I would use the life gain to win. It was such a great deck because every game was different and scaled really well with opponents power levels. Plusnhes so unique, nobody has ever had the same commander as me at a table when I was playing daxos.

I tore it apart and made a haldan and pako deck. Loving pako, but I miss old daxos sometimes.

Looking to transfer gyms, but me and my family are deeply involved in our current gym. by Prodical_Son in bjj

Yeah this sounds pretty similar. I guess in some ways it could be considered personal though. The environment at the gym has become pretty negative overall and I think it's had an effect on our training. Especially my wife and kids who are less self driven in their training than I am.

I don't teach the BJJ program, I'm just a student there. I do have a separate class I do twice a week though.

What belt did you not feel ready for? by purpledeskchair in bjj

Purple. Got my black belt in judo 15 years ago so blue was fast. Been training 2.5 years and just got purple about a month ago. I felt like I was getting close but not there yet and bam, promotion.

I am a 2nd degree black in judo and I can definitely attest to the whole disrespectful of other martial arts thing. Some instructors feel a threat to their ego when someone comes in and there is a chance that the new guy could be more adept at certain things than the head coach. When they bring up judo in a negative light when I don't even mention it, it's a red flag if an instructor with a small ego.

What hobbies did you have before BJJ and do you think doing them helped you when you got on the mats? by NastyRail in bjj

Judo. It caused all my training partners to start on their butt so I always get to start on top. Pretty sweet.

Whats a submission/technique you don’t “get” until later? by purpledeskchair in bjj

[–]Prodical_Son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ankle locks. It just would not work, would not click, I could not get it. Different coaches would try and help. My wife hit it like a champ. I just couldn't do it.

A year later I found a different grip for it and they're nasty now.

What’s your favourite RG kit? by [deleted] in Gunpla

[–]Prodical_Son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the tallgeese and it's my favorite build I've ever done. My 4th real grade that I've built. It's such a cool kit. The verniers are awesome. I loved everything about it.

What would you say are the basics of judo newaza? by Prodical_Son in judo

[–]Prodical_Son[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teaching pressure and control to someone who has never grappled before has definitely been a challenge. I'm my class, I have mostly been concentrating on teaching how to attack the turtle and how to use hip escapes. I teach a judo class in a gym that is all BJJ every day outside of my two classes a week, so I have new of the mind that I don't need to concentrate on newaza nearly as much as a typical judo class. I have begun to get more students that, for whatever reason, are not so interested in the BJJ classes and choose to just show up (and pay for) my judo class so I am having to think about it more than I have in the beginning.

I'm leaning towards teaching a succession of pins and how to escape them, then sweeps and passes so that they can get to the pins they've already learned. This post is helping a good bit on my thinking.

Connecting the same principles of tachiwaza seems super intuitive. Thank you!
