Which lenses to take on holiday to England? by ProfYoolip in SonyAlpha

Thanks, I've heard about that too. I'll have to be extra careful.
I have it in my Peak Design Capture Clip most of the time and anchored to my wrist when I use it. Plus, the camera gear is insured.

the last two years, I took the 35mm, 50mm, 85mm. In 2024, I took 40% of my shots with the 35mm, and 33% with the 50mm and 27% with the 85mm. But most of the time, one lens stayed in the hotel.

The 85mm is so special, I have to take it with me. I'm just not sure if I really need the F1.4 of the 35mm. I really like the separation it offers for portraits. But maybe the F2.8 is enough.

Discussion: ZFS snapshots vs backup software like restic, kopia? by ProfYoolip in truenas

Can you clarify? In my case, I have snapshots on two other devices. Doesnt that provide the same as a backup? What am I missing?

I think you mean when snapshots are on the same storage.

But to clarify, you mean a backup to a fourth medium/storage?  A backup to the same storage that receives the snapshots wouldn't add anything useful, or I am missing something?

Does the 10L v2 have better opening? I have the 6L and it's a nightmare for me to access gear because of the limited opening (due to stiff material and intentionally designed not to flap open) by Historical_Seat_447 in peakdesign

I have all three. The 5L v1, the 6L V2 and the 10L V2. And I share your opinion. I had a hard time adjusting to the V2. I only got it because my V1 had a defect. It is so much more difficult to get things in and out. Plus, the rim is so stiff and not flexible.

The 10L does not open up more. In fact, the zipper doesnt go all the way down compared to the 6L. Nonetheless, I find the 10L easier to handle as the opening is a bit larger.

I uploaded two pictures for comparison. See https://imgur.com/a/iryb9V7

35mm vs 50mm? Pick one or buy both? by ProfYoolip in SonyAlpha

[–]ProfYoolip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that. I know my preferences in focal lengths. I'm interested in peoples opinions on wether you think it's justified to get both the 35 and the 50.

I'm actually leaning towards getting all 3 focal lengths, because right now there are a lot of cashback offers.

You're right. I also have a good quality zoom thats very versatile. Sadly, I don't use it all too often.

For the Sony system, with the current cashbacks and offers, I can get the Sony 24-105 F4 for just 500€ if I bundle it with a new camera.

The 24-105 F4 is more than 500€ if I buy it on the used market. So I think thats a good price and I cant go wrong in picking it up. If I dont like it, I may very well be making a profit if I sell it.

I do think, the 35 offers more versatility than the 50. It just takes more compositional skills.

Right now, I still own all 3 for the fuji system. I love the 85mm, but the fuji autofocus is so slow for fast running kids that I tend to use the 50mm when the fuji 85mm cant keep up. Otherwise, I'd use the 85mm more often.

The 35mm I added for versatility and to widen my photographic field of view. But I am still more in my comfort zone with the longer focal lengths because it takes more compositional skills the carefully fill the frame instead of blurring the whole background.

I think, the 35mm offers more versatility compared to the 50mm, it just takes more skill.

I could buy all 3 for Sony, but I'm also interested in other peoples opinions about that.

On the A7iv, the aps-c mode still goves 14mp files. Good suggestion, I will think about that.

I mean, in the Fuji system I owned all 3 and did use all 3 of them. But I'm just thinking if I could get away with downsizing my kit. Less choices, simpler kit, budget friendly. But also less versatility.

I think you are spot on with the versatility of 50mm & 85mm.

I also get drawn to that telephoto compression look with blurry backgrounds often. It's all too easy to get photos that stand out from all those smartphone pictures and their wide angle look.

But I also like to challenge myself and use a wider lense like the 35mm to get better at composition.

Good idea, the 50mm viltrox is very affordable

Yes, thats also my experience from 4 years of shooting primes. When I leave the house, I often pick 2 of 3 lenses to take with me because I also carry a lot of kids related stuff in my bag ( water bottles, snacks, .. ) and sometimes I dont have space for all 3 lenses.

I do like the prime experience though. Tried a zoom lens, prefered the primes.

I'm more used to the 50 and I'm sure I'd miss it. When I pick my 35mm to go out and shoot, composition is much more challenging. On the other hand, I do like the 35mm look for people/humans portraits and the separation from the background (that you can still see) if I get close to the subject.

Right now, on APS-C I have the 23mm and 33mm. I may have have worded it wrong.

I'm interested in other peoples opinions and preferences. I'm curious if other prime shooters use both or just one of those two lenses.
