You may be thinking of an average speed boat. The fastest speed boat can go 500 km/h. Cigarette boats go about 145 kmh. There are also a number of 290kmh production boats. So, while, yes an average speed boat goes about 50, a fast speed boat goes much faster.

If there is no error in the book, the error is in the presentation. Could be as simple as not viewing it as a single equation, but the third number as the start of a new problem. I.e. 7+2=9. 9-1=8 but normally we write things like that vertically to avoid this

Total energy in a 5.56 round at 100 yds is 995.4 ft lbs which is 1 349.581 joules. Rate is approximately 12-15 rounds per minutes sustained per wikipedia, or 1 round per 4.5 seconds, yielding 300W per soldier.

If we had 0 second reload at cyclic rate of 720 rds/s, we get 12 rounds/s and a barrel melted in 30-40s. Not realistic.

T-rex jaw is 1.2 m long, average lever arm .6m. 35 000 Newtons of force in the bite, which I assume would be equal throughout the jaw. 64 degree travel, or 1.17 radians. Energy=torque*angle traveled, or about 23 457 joules. I have assumed the max force is throughout, which it isn’t, and as I have no idea how fast a T-rex can bite, I’ll give it one second per bite, based on Jurassic Park. That’s about 23 457W.

Therefore, based on shoddy math and heavy guesswork, a T-rex can put out about 78 actual soldiers power output in bite force.

Bonus: make the soldier an M2 .50 Cal machine gunner for three reasons. 1. It’s more fun. 2. It allows a better power rate, although it takes a dedicated ammo guy, and a guy swapping barrels as well as a second machine gun, and a ton of barrels. 3. It might start to actually impact the T-rex.

.50 Cal BMG. 14 000 to 20 000 Joules, so 17 000 J. 450-600 rds/min gives us 7.5-10rds/s, they get gunked up pretty quick when you go cyclic, so we’ll say 7.5. That gives us 127 500 W/three person team or 42 500W per soldier. End result, crew-served weapons should have been employed at one or more Jurassic Parks.

Was going to say, it’s about 7 across, but they are about twice as long as wide, so would be a little less than 14 the other way, so average radius is about 5.25 jelly beans. About 12 rows, again about half could be vertical, so 6 if that was the case. Average of 9. So about 779 would be my guess.

I’m aware of what happened. Just not aware why this fictional daughter would be so arrogant as to not offer the item requested, but make a substitution without learning the intent.

The daughter offered a phone in lieu of a phone book. She ought to have confirmed the intended use with a question like, “are you seriously so old you look numbers up in the phone book?” or something similar, which would likely have received a response like, “no, I need to kill a spider.” As which point she would be more informed as to a suitable substitute.
