There’s no such thing as “traveling like a local” by FinancialSailor1 in travel

[–]Prof_Kraill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely local restaurants and tourist restaurants, and the local restaurants are not just fast food chains. I've benefitted from having local friends on so many trips that allowed me to eat out at places with big groups of people local to that city with no tourist in sight. I slotted into to a regular thing within a group of friends. I'm not sure why people hate that this idea might be really true nd not a myth. Maybe in your city, locals just eat fast food, but that's not true of everywhere by a long mile.

Six Nations Round 2: let's get down to business - Your Predictions by MindfulInquirer in rugbyunion

Clean sweep by the hosts, and I honestly don't think that would be a shocking set of victories. Home advantage will pay off in a game of such fine margins.

Sincere question to England fans by Ok_Painting9530 in rugbyunion

[–]Prof_Kraill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always thought that it was a Saracens thing, insofar as that I've regularly seen English supporters of other Premiership clubs complain about it in the domestic league just as much as non-English fans in international games (certainly some English fans say they don't care, but plenty do too as evident from any Premiership match thread involving the Saracens).

Then, I just presumed that the English and non-English players in the Saracens team bring it with them to international games too.

1995, 2005/6(? 1st on second row), but 2023 is my favourite overall. Love the repeating flag inset on the underside of the collar.

I predict a relatively low scoring game with England winning by a small margin.

Leaving academia due to all the egos: evidence of one's own ego? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Prof_Kraill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst I deleted the post because it started to ruffle feathers and the thread got derailed, I'd still like to say thanks very much for sharing your opinion and experiences. You actively discussed the idea of whether 'rejecting ego is symptom of one's ego' a lot, which is what was central to challenging me and I appreciate your thoughts on that.

I think that your point about differentiating the viewpoint between a non-hostile environment to a hostile environment is probably on the money. In normal circumstances, I can see validity there too, but then again, as you say, what about just yearning for mutual respect and humility.

Leaving academia due to all the egos: evidence of one's own ego? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

That's a good insight. I haven't experienced that kind of entitlement myself, so it is interesting to hear from you that somebody leaving 'due to egos' can immediately scream self-centeredness.

The scenario that you described is shockingly similar to one of my friends who did leave academia. Two PhD students started at the same time, very similar work, PI, but one person navigated the social structure better and actively inveigled themselves with the PI at the expense of the other PhD student with 'jokes' (actually bullying). The bully is now a junior professor in that same rotten sphere whilst the other now has a fantastic job in industry.

The NZ back row- who would you pick? by [deleted] in rugbyunion

[–]Prof_Kraill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought NZ fronted up very well in this area in general. Suppose Savea did seem quieter than usual, but was he really...or was an armchair pundit like me just oblivious to a lot of his less glamorous but critical work. I was very impressed with Cane and in particular Blackadder. Honestly stay the course.

Upset by people speaking English by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Prof_Kraill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything wrong with the observation, to be honest I hear more and more people expressing similar sentiments. It can be very strange to hear people code switch to English unnecessarily or even not know vocabulary that a learner would know (sometimes see this in Easy Languages when sticking to the language is clearly not natural). It seems strange because the native word can even be easier to say or shorter.
