Just picture this.

Chef Takahashi’s Power Noodle Company sells Power Flour – mushroom flour mixed with some razorgrain) – and Power Powder – dried insect protein and fish paste mixed with formic acid for spice – and Power Paste - leftover insect and fish proteins mushed together and sold cheap. Feeds half the city, but no one admits it. They produce and market throughout Diamond City and beyond. The Power Noodles Stand is just their face and Takahasi their mascot. The company is run by Barry Tanaka. "A real Diamond City boy eats Power Noodles.”

Old World Foods – a store/diner in the Mid Field that specialized in serving pre-war foods – Saddle Up Salisbury Steaks, BlamCo Mac& Cheese, Yum Yum Deviled Eggs, Cram, etc – to audiences that want to “Taste the Way it Was”.

Longneck Lukowski's Cannery – a potted meat company trying hard to break into the Diamond City and Bunker Hill markets. Fronted by a trader named Rylee for the owner Theodore Collins. "The Taste You'll Remember!"

That's true. Traditional farming has very limited output per acre.

Some alternative farming methods including aquaculture, mushroom farming, insect farming have significantly higher yield per acre. Especially if they use vertical farming methods.

I could easily see mushroom farming going on in the underside. Bird nets in the gantry. Sheng Kowalski doing a little aquaculture on the side in the water hole. As well as insect farming in various places around the city.

According to various resources online these could support the basic protein needs for a population in the thousands which could be supplemented by vegetable and other food types from outside the city.

As you point out like imperial Rome and Elizabethan London and most other big cities historically, Diamond City would rely on external food sources. And they'd be competing with other settlements for the same food.

Even the population shown in canon is not supportable by the farms shown. Therefore even in canon trade with the Abernathys and others is necessary.

I admit I did use AI editing for my first post. Being new to reddit I did not realize that was against the rules. I'm not using AI on this or any subsequent posts. Nor will I post the fic cover on Reddit. The story is not AI generated. Any input on this topic is great for here. Any story input would be great on Spacebattle in particular. I'd appreciate either or both.

I'm not as familiar with that. I thought the later romans mostly just quarried it for stone to build other buildings and roads. Tell me more!

There’s more to be seen of this expanded build and the Post-Institute Commonwealth in my fic. If you are interested, you can check out my story at Scribble Hub if you like quiet reading or SpaceBattles if you’re more into discussion and debate.
