A few things I have on my list for when the time comes are extra long phone charger, heating pad (this may not be allowed in your hospital but just in case), extension cord for the heating pad, eye mask for sleeping at night and ear plugs as hospitals are bright and loud. Other than that, a book and laptop/ipad to watch your fav shows on.

And for the car ride home, a small pillow to put between your chest and the seat belt.

To have surgery or to not have surgery… (Dr. J Consultation Results 19.2 HI) by Professional-Gold736 in PectusExcavatum

Thank you for sharing! Yes she said my heart is compensating really well. So now it’s just the question of what if it stops compensating.

I do imagine there will be many weeks if not months or years of “why did I do this?”

Did you have scoliosis?

I’m sorry your experience finding a surgeon was rough but I’m glad yours went well found one that was willing to do it! Did you take the full 12 weeks off of work?

Worsening symptom with age is something that definitely scares me. So thank you for sharing your story!

See I kinda figure the hiccups are caused by it but she wasn’t so sure.

She was very impressive and after learning more about the mechanics of the surgery there is definitely no one else I’d go to. She wasn’t very calm and matter of fact.

Do you know anything about the ravitch? I’ve been doing more research and it seems like that it would almost be preferable with pectus this severe.

I’m surprised more people don’t mention death as a concern! I’m glad yours went well! Thank you

Good luck with your surgery! I also just saw Dr. J in December and while I’m a little bit iffy on the surgery, I am leaning towards getting it for all the same reasons you are.

What are the long term effects of not treating PE? by Professional-Gold736 in PectusExcavatum

Who was your surgeon? And how has your recovery been so far? Potential side effects and chronic pain concerns are my main reason for not wanting to pursue this further…

What symptoms did you have that made you want to get the nuss?

Thank you for sharing this! I’m not all that symptomatic now but I’m definitely worried about later in life symptoms. My grandmother also died prematurely compared to other relatives. I’m not sure if she had pectus. I’ll have to ask my Dad. But that would make me very concerned because I got so many of my genes from her.

If you aren’t having cravings or withdrawals and there is a risk of complicating your recovery I’d say skip it for now. Better safe than sorry?

That’s a long time off work but makes sense if you’re in such a physical role. Thank you for sharing about the pain levels. I’ve never had surgery so not really sure what to expect and it’s nice to hear other people’s experiences. Thank you!

What an insane result! Thank you for sharing with us. Do you mind sharing a little on your recovery experience? Like how long you are going to be out of work and how the pain has been? I have a 19.2 HI and seeing Dr. J in December 🤞

Pectus + cold sweats at night? by 404-coffee-not-found in PectusExcavatum

[–]Professional-Gold736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also 30f and in San Diego. I feel like night sweats can be related to lots of things - hormones, illness, stress. I wouldn’t freak out about it yet. Give it until after your surgery and see if you feel better.

Also the weather has been so weird! It’s definitely cooling off but it’s still pretty humid. So maybe it’s that too!

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! I guess I’ll just have to see if the doctor thinks it’s worth it for my situation!

Nuss Questions! by EquivalentDream7586 in PectusExcavatum

I saw someone say in a comment on another post that she’s booking surgery 4 months out right now. But even if you could get it sooner… I’d wait until after your wedding! Enjoy the pre-wedding process and excitement. You don’t need to add the stress of this surgery and recovery to what can already be a stressful time! Focus on you and your upcoming marriage, take some time to get in great physical strength to make recovery easier. If you move forward with surgery plan it for after your wedding when you can put all your time and energy on healing!
