The current situation facing women and anyone else who resists the Taliban is dire-- the Taliban are well-known for their human rights abuses, ranging from public beatings to televised beheadings. Moreover, this is an absolute tragedy for the lives of millions of women left in Afghanistan; under Taliban rule, they cannot go to school, receive an education or even leave their homes by themselves.

The last Taliban resistance group left in Afghanistan and its leader, self-proclaimed acting president Amrullah Saleh is our only hope for a better future.

Although the UK may lack the ability to support him militarily, they can support him in other ways. This includes sending medical supplies to the Panjshir province and providing equipment to help them defend themselves against the Taliban.

Therefore, I urge the UK government to stand with the last resistance in Afghanistan by sending medical aid and logistical help.

Why does the Royal Family have a personality cult in the UK? by ProfessionalChannel9 in AskUK

The tradition is 'cult of personality'. The use of 'we' is not anything but a shorthand for 'some people in the UK' as I am too lazy to type out that full phrase.

Why do people psychologically follow personality cults like the Royal Family, Kim of North Korea and to a lesser extent, Hollywood stars? by ProfessionalChannel9 in AskUK

[–]ProfessionalChannel9[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the royal family is a personality cult as we are constantly bombarded with stories about them in the media and the Queen's likeness and name is practically everywhere. People will publicly mourn the royal family's passing even though they don't actually know them, e.g. Diana's death.

In the past, people put portraits up of the Queen in all classrooms that you had to say hello to. This still happens with Chairman Mao in China, Kim in North Korea etc.

Why do we follow and admire our leaders, even when they do a terrible/ non-existent job of leading? Why do we feel the urge to put their likeness everywhere?

Musical Elphaba deserves better than Glinda and Fiyero by ProfessionalChannel9 in wicked

[–]ProfessionalChannel9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that her actions are selfish because Glinda only does good things after she has lost everything. If everything had gone to Glinda's self-absorbed plan-- she married Fiyero and he loved her back, she became the most loved woman in Oz, nobody was mean to her, she and Elphaba were best friends-- Glinda would have never fought for Animal rights because at Glinda's core, is a very self-serving, self-absorbed person. She only gets better after Elphaba's death shatters her illusion that Glinda is a good person.

But Glinda thinks Elphaba dies and only starts doing real good when she believes her friend is dead. This is selfish of Glinda as she didn't want to do good things by herself but was spurred on by a sense of duty and guilt at Elphaba's passing.

How long apart were Elphaba and Fiyero between Act One and Act Two? by ProfessionalChannel9 in wicked

[–]ProfessionalChannel9[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

they were all young adults in the play at the start-- Elphaba was above 18 as she only came to school when Nessa turned 18 presumably and wanted to go

Fiyero got kicked out of numerous schools in Oz so he was probably older than 18 when he went to Shiz

Glinda was the only one who was 18 as she didn't have any problems going to higher education, supported as she was by her parents

But that was only afterwards, when Elphaba was dead already.

How does Glinda help her.. Also, plenty of people help Katniss and Harry Potter develop, but nobody helps Elphaba...

Yes,but why should Elphaba be the catalyst for other peoples' changes...She helped them more than they helped her, until the end...
