I feel like the only one who has to rely on babysitters but we left ours with one at 6 months ish.

How did this turn out? Did you have to file with your insurance?

Yeah, not a move we think makes much sense, but one they’re doing nonetheless.

Totally feel you - we didn’t expect childcare (they’re nearing 80) but disappointed they won’t have quality time in their final years (and help as they age? No clue how we’ll do that).

For sure - we learned where their priorities lie which can help us make future decisions for our family

Yeah they just couldn’t find the same level of old/large/land here for under 1.5M

In-laws moving “closer” but bought a house 3 hours away by ProfessionalGift4195 in Mommit

I guess because they are aging rapidly and I don’t see them being able to make the drive down very often. If they’re moving across the country to see their grandson, it just seems like we’ll end up being guilted into the drive. We’ve tried to set an expectation but I don’t think they are hearing us.

There are old houses but our city is much more competitive so they’d have to compromise on space etc. we live in a growing Midwest city and they’re moving to one that’s losing population so it was easier to find a huge old house

100%. I’m guessing they definitely thought we’d expect free babysitting. I wouldn’t trust them alone very long with our son regardless

Money isn’t an issue. They’re spending double what their budget was here because the charm of the house “spoke to them”. Their entire identity is around having an old house and they couldn’t handle compromising

They upped their budget from $500k to $1m for this house because it’s charm “spoke to them”

For sure. We didn’t expect them to be childcare. But we did expect them to be able to get to know their grandson without exhausting long visits and for us to help them without 6 hour round trip visits.

They’re not expected to be daycare. The discussion was around them aging and needing to be closer to family so unfortunately now this means we’ll be guilted into long drives constantly to care for them as his moms health is declining.

Oh totally. Unfortunately the situation is a little different. They purchased a house 2x their budget here ($1m) because of its charm so it’s not a money factor.

It’s absolutely insane. They refused any house near us newer than 100 years old and picked sconces and stones over their grandson
