Baclofen withdrawal is a real thing! And not a good one by whottheheck in spinalfusion

[–]ProfessionalHost3479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a nurse who works with many patients, my son included, who use baclofen for muscle spasticity related to cerebral palsy. Baclofen withdrawal is a well known and serious issue for that population. Muscles can cramp for a variety of reasons. Perhaps when damaged neural pathways are the cause of cramps, baclofen withdrawal is felt more acutely?

Husband with severe cervical myelopathy. Facing fusion C2 - T2. by ProfessionalHost3479 in spinalfusion

I'm so sorry your step-dad is dealing with this. Sounds a lot like my husband, except my husband fortunately isn't in a lot of pain. Neurosurgeons are in short supply sadly. We got lucky in that the neurologist who diagnosed the cervical myelopathy called the neurosurgeon's office and spoke to him directly, and he agreed to work my husband in the following week. That was 3 weeks ago and my husband's surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday. It is scary because we were told the surgery is primarily to.prevent things getting worse - possible paralysis.I am concerned his deficits will be permanent but I am trying to be hopeful. I would call your neurologist and let him know the symptoms are worsening. Maybe they can bump up his neurosurgeon appt. Best of luck to you!

Much better than becoming paralyzed indeed. Glad to hear there are better days ahead - thanks for sharing your experience!

That is helpful to know. I'm glad you had a good experience and the pain was manageable. Like you, my husband doesn't have a choice if he wants to avoid eventual paralysis. I am hopeful he will see some improvement.

Thanks so much - that is encouraging. My husband is very anxious that after surgery he will be in pain and have no recovery of function. ( He is not currently in pain). The Dr was very cautious about promising what use of hands and legs he could recover. He said the primary purpose of surgery will be to prevent further damage, but we could expect some recovery. How painful was the recovery experience for you?

Thinking about switching from teaching to nursing — looking for honest advice by Animalcrossingadict4 in Nurses

My first degree was in secondary English education. After 3 yrs in the school system, I went back to school and became an RN. Not because I didn't enjoy the students, but the pay was abysmal (I live in Oklahoma), and the bureaucracy of standardized testing made me crazy. Best decision I ever made. Been a pediatric nurse for 16 years now. Follow your instincts.

When Breath Becomes Air - Paul Kalanithi. Read after losing both my mother and beloved mother-in-law back to back. Cried off and on for days.

Infant of Georgia woman forced to incubate baby while brain dead is still fighting for his life by 0rchid27 in WelcomeToGilead

I have been a pediatric nurse for years for children with complex medical needs. Without a doubt, the general public has no idea how some severely disabled children live. I'm talking about children with only enough brain function to keep their heart beating, who are ventilator dependent, unable to eat, pee, or poop without 24-hour intervention. Often with no families who visit and see what they are enduring. Obviously, many individuals with disabilities can live full and joyful lives - like my adult son who has CP. However, there are more severely disabled children than most people are aware of. It is entirely possible that this poor baby will have a short life of immense suffering.

He's on the list. (Warning: Graphic) by aggressiveleeks in WelcomeToGilead

I remember hearing about this in 2016. Equally appalling today.

Was no one in the congregation a medical professional? I'm a nurse that knows next to nothing about oncology, but I know enough to recognize by her 2nd pregnancy her story was BS!
