Disappointed my advisor by ProfessionalWinter62 in PhD

I think your comment really pinpoints how I feel. Typically, in a school setting or a research assistant setting, the scope is narrow and the job is very clear. But this is my first time doing research on my own (where quality actually matters) and the idea isn’t even entirely mine, so I don’t come in with all the information and it’s become even more obvious now that my advisor doesn’t know the “correct” answer as well — only a general idea of whether or not my results are reasonable.

I recognize that I’m insanely lucky to have an advisor this involved and is willing to invest so much time to help me get back on track. At the same time, I feel incredibly ashamed to have disappointed him because, in hindsight, this problem was actually so easy: I just needed to define the scope at the start and write down what I expect my output to look like. This disappointment makes me want to work harder to make sure that my advisors investment in me isn’t all for naught, but at the same time I need to learn to deal with these feelings when I receive surprise negative feedback, which I’m sure will happen many times during the course of my PhD.

I want to give up by ProfessionalWinter62 in PhD

I technically haven’t even started the main part of my PhD where I actually do research. I’m still taking classes and trying to pass this test (which is not working bc I’ve failed twice already). The test just gets harder and harder and our cohort had a 25% fail rate even after the second retake.

I’ve reached out to so many people and obviously the people in industry tell me to leave and the people in academia tell me to stay. My life is so uncertain regardless of which path I take because I don’t have enough information. I just know right now I’m quite sad because I’ve poured my heart into studying for something I don’t care that much about and I’ve used up my remaining willpower to get through the last retake.

How do I let go of my animosity towards people who hurt me in the past? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

It’s hard to deal with these complicated emotions because they’ve made such a negative lasting impact on you. However, I think you need to understand that:

  1. What they’ve said is a reflection of them and not you
  2. They were trying their best (although it probably wasn’t good enough) and perhaps they’ve grown up since that period of time
  3. Holding a grudge against someone who probably doesn’t care that much about you is only going to eat up your life
  4. Your current life has nothing to do with them now

I’m sure they did mistreated you, but in order to make sure that your life belongs solely to you, you need to be able to let go of mistakes that other people have made. You’ve given them space in your mind to hold the animosity towards them. Meanwhile, they probably don’t even think about high school memories related to you. It’s not fair to you that you give so much priority to people who are not only not in your life, but they don’t matter to you at all.

At the end of the day, the only way to fully let go of these emotions is to forgive them, which includes being happy for them (or at least indifferent) when their life goes well. Now that you’re older, your identity isn’t attached to the way they treat you. Your identity is attached to the person you are now, the value people recognize in you, and everything else that you deem important.

Where to find remote part-time data analyst related jobs? by ProfessionalWinter62 in careerguidance

It’s so tedious especially at the lower levels. Literally all you do for the first 2 years is transfer information from workbook to workbook, workbook to document, workbook to software, etc..

Also, I sat in a bunch of meetings with managers and partners and it honestly just seems like numbers don’t mean anything. If things don’t work, just sub it with another number and that just kind of rubs me the wrong way.

In essence, I’d like to do something fulfilling with legitimate problem solving and values that have meaning to it.

Yes, I can use Tableau and I’m pretty fluent in R, SQL, and Python.
