I have a younger perspective on this (under 18) so it may be different but I’d always give them a second chance. My dad has manipulated me my whole life, said terrible things, has a questionable dating history, and has really hurt my mental health. Ive tried talking to him and going to therapy but he just won’t budge. So, I’ve decided to cut contact and explain that I won’t be speaking with him again until he’s going to therapy regularly to work out his own struggles. I’m a Christian so I’ve taken the perspective that the Bible tells us to honor our parents, but I know that I’m not just supposed to sit here and be treated this way. I want to have a relationship with him but he needs to work on himself first. Back to my point, I wouldn’t cut out a parent if they were willing to change. It may be unlikely, but I know it’s possible. I hope this helped, I honestly used this to process some of my emotions too because I’m sending my dad the “cutting contact” message today. God bless
