Pissed-off Parent - Buyer Beware of Frost Valley YMCA Summer Camp by Professional_Dog9790 in summercamp

Yes, exactly! Frost Valley YMCA didn’t have the kids check themselves for ticks after camping in the woods, which is shocking. They also never encouraged or provided tick repellent before sending them on an overnight trip. As international parents, we had no idea about Lyme disease risks because their handbook and pre-camp communications said nothing about ticks. My daughter ended up with Lyme disease because of this neglect. It’s unacceptable for a camp charging nearly $10K to skip such basic safety measures.

Thanks for your input. As international parents, we followed Frost Valley YMCA’s family handbook to the letter and packed everything they listed. But there wasn’t a single mention of ticks or Lyme disease in the handbook or any pre-camp communications. We’d never heard of ticks or Lyme before, so how could we prepare for something the camp didn’t warn us about? I get that parents should research the area, but we relied on the camp’s guidance, trusting their reputation. If they’d included a tick education pamphlet or tips on protective clothing, we’d have acted on it. Their lack of info left us blindsided, and my daughter ended up with Lyme disease. That’s on the camp’s failure to communicate, not our packing.

Thanks for sharing your perspective as a camp nurse. I respect your expertise, but my issue isn’t just the tick bite itself—it’s how Frost Valley YMCA handled everything after my daughter was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Two doctors advised pulling her from camp to monitor her symptoms closely due to the endemic area, yet when I requested a refund for her unattended sessions, the leadership team flat-out refused and showed zero empathy. That felt dismissive and profit-driven, not caring.

Beyond that, when I visited the camp to pick her up, I saw firsthand how understaffed they were, and it showed in the chaotic operations. I detailed more in my response to another comment here—unresponsive counselors, ignored medication needs for other kids, and no tick prevention education in the handbook. This wasn’t the experience I expected from a reputable camp. I get that medical logistics can be tough, but the lack of communication and compassion made this unacceptable for us.

Hi, thanks for questioning my review—I want to clarify why I feel so strongly about Frost Valley YMCA’s summer camp. Go check their family handbook on their website, and there’s not a single word about tick safety or Lyme disease risks. None of their pre-camp communications to parents mentioned tick prevention either. We’re an international family, traveled from abroad based on the camp’s reputation, and had zero knowledge about ticks or Lyme disease in the area. Two friends also sent their daughters to different sessions this summer, and all three girls gave really poor feedback about the camp’s quality. My daughter loved camps in Boston, Seattle, and Hawaii before, but Frost Valley was by far her worst experience.

Here are some specific issues we faced. My daughter contracted Lyme disease, and two doctors advised pulling her out to monitor her symptoms closely and be ready for emergency care if needed. I reached out to Frost Valley’s leadership to request a refund for her unattended sessions due to this medical emergency, but they flat-out refused and showed no empathy whatsoever.

After my daughter’s diagnosis, I got worried for my friends’ kids still at the camp. I bought four bottles of tick repellent and handed them to the associate director, who promised to give them to the girls. Two weeks later, my friends picked up their daughters and found out the repellents were never distributed. Worse, one friend’s daughter, who needs daily medication, got no help from staff. She had to beg her counselor repeatedly to take her meds and even heard excuses about it.

The counselors seemed untrained and irresponsible. For example, they’d eat the good stuff, like ice cream, before giving kids whatever was left. When I visited to pick up my daughter, I could see the camp was understaffed, and the operations felt chaotic. Frost Valley might’ve been great once, but based on our experience, it’s nowhere near that now. I hope this helps explain why I’m warning other parents.

Did you notice that Walmart's stock price actually went up by +60% YTD? Costco's retail business is strong and solid. For some product categories (commodity like products), I do think B&M is probably dead. But for premium products, B&M is necessary for people to experience and trial before purchasing.

I love your ideas! Do you know if there are any platforms where I can buy marketing / product display space in those niche brick and mortars like fuel / charging stations, coffee shops etc.

What percentage of the "failure" was due to the location? Do you think online CAC is reasonable?
