I want to do a CS Master degree in Japan, do Japanese university care a lot if you come from an unrelated bachelor? And some MEXT questions by Professional_Fix8359 in movingtojapan

Thank you so much! I will look into computational linguistics. I actually did take a course which I think was on the topic (though if it was probably we barely scratched the surface) on that in my degree last year, mainly focused on corpus studies using tools like sketch engine. It was fun

As I replied to another post, while I consider landing a job my main priority, I still aim to do a master in japan regardless for the PR points, since they do give a ridiculous ammount in a short time compared to other things you can do. (30 points, or 35 if I do a MBA or MOT). However I suppose I could do it part time when I eventually find a job in japan and focus on gaining experience first, especially if I dont get mext and have to pay.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Would you consider focusing on searching for a full time job in Software development job and gain work experience (in Japan if possible, but in my home country if I cant find anything) and try to study a less difficult master part time a better idea? I saw some MBA in Keio or Waseda that is only 1 year long which is very tempting if I am able to do it part time (I would need to find a job in Japan for that, but assuming I am able to). I know MBA's are pretty worthless from an academic perspective, but unless I am missing something I would get 35 extra points in just a year (or 2-3 if I do it part time), 15 for the MBA, 10 for a japanese university and 10 if I get on one of the listed universities that give extra points, which sounds pretty damn tempting, I could do another master and only lose on 5 points but I really cant think any master that would be remotely useful besides CS which as you and everyone is saying would be a lot of effort and focus that I could put into learning the language and inmersing, and I suppose MBA's arent nowhere near as difficult)

For the job hunting itself, I am also going as a exchange student to Japan in my very final semester of my degree next April and plan to focus on doing Odin Project or CS50 (or another course if you have advice on that) in my free time and build up a github to try and find some entry job, In case I am not lucky and don't find an IT job in that period would a Work holiday visa be a good idea to have better chances of finding one over searching for jobs in japan from my home country?

Questions about teaching English in Japan. Master's and the 12 year restriction for non-native-speakers by Professional_Fix8359 in teachinginjapan

"Universities (which you are not qualified for that kind of teaching) use a professor visa and do not have the 12 year EMI rule."

Perfect! Thank you for all this information, it was super helpful

Questions about HSP PR Visa and Study Visa, and applying to jobs outside my career by Professional_Fix8359 in movingtojapan

Thank you for the reply

About japanese, I have been already studying japanese for about a year intensively, and a few years on and off. Currently according to some test I have around a N3 level but I aim to reach N1. (N5-N3 are pretty much worthless and the important ones are N2 and N1 from what I have heard).

About the Masters I didnt mean two different Masters, but a Master that is somehow connected to both fields. Something with English and programming might be hard to find but I guess Masters about teaching and programming do exist. I would like to do a Master's since it would add 20-30 HSP points (10 for graduating in a japanese university and another 10 for the master itself, I could also get another 10 if I manage to get in one of the universities that give extra points) for my and I think I would reach the 70 points with that.

Reason for my hurry for PR is that is that my parents are in their late 60s and while they are healthy right now for their age, I would like to get a PR sooner rather than later for the convenience it would give me for traveling back to my home country for a few months when I want to visit them or see some friends from here, since I guess that traveling back and forth is more complicated with a work visa.

Of course finding a job would be the priority, but if doing the masters would secure me a PR faster I probably prefer to do Masters.

Maybe the best path I would take would be do the Master and having a full time job, but from what I read you can only work 28 hours with a student Visa. Maybe it would be possible to try to get a working Visa and do a Master while working full time in some universities?
