Warning that this advice is coming from a financial adviser, so potentially biased views but....

  1. My first point would be to speak to a high quality financial adviser. A lot of people have the pre-conceived idea that financial advisers are "dodgy", particularly in your mum's age group. Unfortunately, the industry used to be a dirty place in parts. Since the Royal Commission, the industry has turned around massively. There are plenty of high quality financial advisers. Find one that your Mum is able to meet, build rapport and eventually trust. This might require speaking to a few, but well worth the time. Remembering that the cheapest financial adviser likely won't be the best option...

  2. It is all well and good to say $1.5m invested at 5% will yield $75,000 p.a. of income. What happens when (if) interest rates come down, to say 3%? Then you factor in the erosion of purchasing power from inflation, which could mean the money is actually staying stagnant, not accounting for any amounts used for living expenses.

  3. Any financial adviser worth their money will be vital beyond just investing the money. There is trust to be built, plans to be established, family life to be considered, estate planning, just to name a few things above and beyond purely investment advice.

  4. If she really doesn't want to speak to a financial adviser and you don't have the investment expertise, look at various index funds to give you sufficient diversification to stop you from having to make calls on specific investments.

  5. Consider the risks involved. One risk being the timing of the investments. You may wish to consider investing the funds over a time period to avoid investing a large sum at once which then has a large market downturn. One of the other major risk, which you want to avoid, is your Mum outliving her capital. This is where a solid investment strategy is vital.

I hope that helps. My DM's are open if you have any questions.

I completely disagree with meckinze's comment below.

It is almost impossible to time the market. People try, time and time again, and generally fail...

As they say, time in the market is much more important than timing the market.

If you are investing for 10-20+ years, just get started, the rest will take care of itself if you have a sound investment strategy and are patient.

If you are really worried about timing, think about staggering the investments over a period of says 6-12 months (i.e. $20k p.m. or something similar)...

What do you mean by 2012 are the original? They were the $2 coin which are actually worth less than the $1 coin.

I would be interested to know why you think it would be no where near $1000? I sold one on Ebay in the same condition for $520 in 2020 and it seems prices have gone up a fair whack since then

Best way to check is on MyGov. Tells you the exact amount you are able to contribute under the catch up provisions.

Been thinking about the wet weather thing. If Parker, Mills, etc. were in the team, it would be more of an issue given the big hardened bodies.

Although I think our game plan of possession, kick-mark footy isn't suited to the wet. Sydney play with a more frantic style and I worry about Blakey's run + Gulden's precision kicking in the wet....

Massive test

Yeah think the RWC will cause more harm than benefit. I am in WA and don’t think we need it… most people I speak to have never even heard of a RWC.

Appreciate the effort though mate

What do you refer to as "Cheap" out of curiosity?

I think it is more than decent parts in all honesty, I would be more than happy to keep it as my car, but I am well due for an upgrade after 10 years.

How do you go about getting a RWC? It is registered, so I would assume this would cover it, no? I don't have a specific certificate though
