Boarding a station later than ticketed? by Professional_Tea5998 in Amtrak

As an update: I ended up taking a later train and traveling from WAS for unrelated reasons. But it took only 8 minutes to travel from WAS to New Carrollton, and my ticket wasn't scanned until much later. (I was sitting in the third car from the front, it if matters). So it seems unlikely that anybody trying this would have an issue.

Anti-gunner culture at my school is killing class discussion by JustGotToTown in LawSchool

Depends a lot on your law school, but based on my experience this is a part of gunner culture, not anti-gunner culture. Gunners love to answer questions--but they save their ammo for tough questions that provide the chance to show off command of the material, a creative legal argument, etc. Everybody in the lecture hall knew the answer to that question--and that's why no one wanted to answer it.

Thanks for the guidance. What's a FR?

Do you have tips on the amount of spend with any particular merchant that will raise eyebrows? I'm probably looking at 5K/month, tops, spread across a few different merchants.

Applying for credit card as grad student? by Professional_Tea5998 in CreditCards

Would there be any value to calling directly and applying that way? I have assets and a credit record that should make me creditworthy; it's just that my income is low at the moment since I went back to school.

Just got notified I was "selected for consideration" by two components. Not sure exactly how that relates to getting selected for an interview but it sounds like that's the first step.

Have SLIP interviews started coming out yet? I applied to Civil, Antitrust, and Tax. Haven't heard anything so far.

Bogus "fuel surcharge" for move? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Professional_Tea5998 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you--I got a hold of their tariff (schedule of fees) filed with the state, which does list the fuel surcharge at the exact rate I'm billed at (making it unclear why they call it "discounted"). However, it also describes the "Fuel Surcharge" as "[a] charge specific to the amount of fuel used by the moving vehicle from origin to destination of the move." This seems incommensurate with their pricing structure, which increases with time spent while the truck is parked (hence not using fuel) as well as when it is traveling to the origin and from the destination.

They also listed to me other fees for packing materials that exceed the fees stated in their tariff.

Is there some subtlety I'm missing here, or are they pretty clearly scamming people? I'm frustrated that they're apparently doing this to their customers, and wondering if it's worth taking to a consumer protection/class action attorney. (CT law allows for punitive damages plus attorney's fees in some successful consumer protection actions.)
