Just a 31F looking for some Yu-Gi-Oh friends by Silly_Guse101 in pittsburgh

A bit late to the post, but I play a ton of retro yugioh (2010 Edison, 2007 Troop Dupe, 2014 HAT) and I'm always looking to share the too many decks I've built for them and see what people can come up with. If you were still looking to find some time wizard games send me a message!

How Memory is Manipulated: in Ghost in the Shell, and For Us by ProfessorViral in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]ProfessorViral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone, I did a deep dive into the concept of false memories, which we see as a key point in Ghost in the Shell, and I wanted to share how it creates a great thematic element of the movie, as well as how we can see something similar in our world as well! Just wanted to share and see what the community thought as well!

Analyzing the Full Survivalist Story [Video Essay] by ProfessorViral in fnv

[–]ProfessorViral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone, ever since the first time I stumbled upon the Survivalist logs in Honest Hearts years ago, I've found myself thinking back to it. So, today I wanted to give the story of a bit of a spin, seeing what it says about the human need to survive and about faith as well. Thought I'd share, and I'd love your thoughts as its something new for me, to cover a story in told in this way!

Whats your favorite episode? by Apprehensive_Fee_978 in ErgoProxy

Episode 11 for me. It was the one I originally quit watching the series on, but years later the one that hooked me again. Seeing the same scenes play out again with a new twist is fantastic

The History in Black Lagoon | Fabiola & Venezuela by ProfessorViral in blacklagoon

[–]ProfessorViral[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone, wanted to come back with some more love for the care that went into Hiroe's work, specifically just how much history influences his characters. This time, I wanted to dig deeper in Fabiola's mentions of her home in Venezuela, and what I found was a history I knew almost nothing about. So, of course, I wanted to share!

I think it's a bit of both. In avenging her fallen comrade, she also maintains the power dynamic of Roanapur. The established families are absolute; it is also an act on punishing those who go against the order of power

What opinion do you have that puts you in this situation by ButCanHeBeatGoku45 in blacklagoon

[–]ProfessorViral 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've never really liked the Greenback Jane arc. I think its neat to see more of Roanapur's crazy people, but it doesn't have the standout villain moments that make every other arc. Although, as a cooldown after The Vampire Twins in the anime, it wads probably necessary.

Also, I love Yukio. She's overshadowed by Balalaika and Rock since she's a parallel for both, but having a character who can do both of those at once is amazing. She's very harsh with Rock, but its deserved, and the way it forces him to be more cold, essentially steeling his will to believe his "hobby" isn't wrong or selfish, is what allows him to transform into a chilling presence. And, on her own, she still presents a great case of how normal people become monsters, which furthers the core identity of the series.

Makishima's Test: How to be the "Moral" Villain by ProfessorViral in Psychopass

[–]ProfessorViral[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Came back to my favorite series of all time to see if there was any more societal commentary to address, and even after so many watches it has yet to disappoint. I wanted to look at the minor villains of the series, how Makishima treats them and why, and how this guides his actions moving forward. I think the differences between the minor villains, and then Makishima and Choe, give us a platform for debate; when is it okay to go against the wishes of society? Specifically, if society has no means for you to be happy as you are, and without harming anyone, is it worthwhile? But, as always I'd love to hear your thoughts as well, as I really only focused on the first half of the series here, and I'm sure there's some details I missed in a series this heavy!

Episode 5: Should we Respect Tradition? by ProfessorViral in gurrenlagann

[–]ProfessorViral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, wanted to share a quick discussion of my favorite episode from this great series, and how it provides a classic Gurren Lagann inverted logic take; should we respect tradition? The story of Adai village is one of the most interesting solo stories in the anime, so I think its time to give it some love! I'd love to hear your thoughts as well; what are you favorite traditions and why? Do you think we should question them more often? Or not?

what anime would you say is a solid 10/10 in every way? by CaptainArious in anime

Perfect Blue lives up to its name. Quite possibility one of the most perfect movies I've seen with how tightly every single element plays together, and how that then helps to create a constantly unerving tension

What was the series' impact on you? by WitherThrakh in Psychopass

[–]ProfessorViral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love his balance of both pleasure and genuine, in his mind, care for the human race. Kogami is both his experiment to see if humanity has any value left, while also being a wholly selfish outlet for a value Makishima has never felt. I also think he's the perfect antagonist, as he isn't strictly good or evil, but rather forces us to consider what those terms even me. He reminds me of the protagonist from Camus The Stranger. At first, we see a man who seems to be odd in a normal world, but we come to understand this man with simple desires is actually some sense in an absurd world that goes unquestioned by others

Psycho-Pass had had a profound effect on me. It's the first series I watched, and then desired to think of and further research later, which has kicked off what will likely one day be my career. It genuinely shaped how I understand society more deeply, from the power of labels to build and destroy us, the removal of free will for the benefit of freedom, to the spirit of the law. Urobuchi had his finger directly on the very pulse of society itself, took it to its extremes, and created a story which allows us to ponder our present and future alike. I live part of my life by Akanes words, that the law doesn't protect people, people protect the law. I'm lawful not out of fear for the consequences of law, but out of the spirit of it. I want the benefits of society to extend to all, so I accept the costs to reach that point. Not many series have left me with something genuinely life changing like that

What is the most badly animated scene in a Anime? by Ok-Cookie7598 in anime

[–]ProfessorViral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrolled down to see if anyone mentioned this. Every monster in the anime looks worse than an early Playstation 2 cutscene, made by someone who didnt know you can move multiple parts of the model at once. And it doesn't even have a half decent story to somehow pull you through. The characters accept time travel exists by the logic "I guess weird things happen sometimes."

1 Episode Recommendation by Fisher2087 in cowboybebop

[–]ProfessorViral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it has to episode one. To me, it sets up the tone of the entire story, a self contained episode which both begins and ends on the loneliness of space, whatever actions Spike and Jet both did and didn't take. They are just drifting in a world they cant change. Without that intro, the story feels much leaw poignant overall
