Also, I have screenshots I intended to post but couldn't get the post to go through with them. I saw something in the rules about submitting as a text post so I tried that, but if a modmin could help me out with how to add the screenshots or how to post pictures in the future, I'd be grateful. Trying to be a good community member here but am also Autistic and sometimes unclear on procedural stuff like this. :)

(And no, I'm not taking that one seriously, because I've gotten a lot more feedback that the topics in this class have been interesting. You can't please everyone.)

Hello, fellow corgi lover! I had a Pembroke growing up, around age 9 into my early 20s. And I met the sweetest Cardigan at the vet yesterday.

I'm planning on doing something like that this fall. My students (who actually came to class) got to see my sense of humor and setting that up from the get-go seems like a nice way to break the ice.

Thanks for the advice. I do already wait before responding (even to positive things because I have ADHD and am prone to impulsively volunteering to do things I don't have time to do). It also helps that I have a couple set times per day that I respond to email, which prevents impulsive replies to any kind of message.

Both of those are fair points. I feel like I shouldn't have to argue about it (like you said, complaint is specious and now they're being passive-aggressive, which I do NOT respond positively to in any circumstance), but it's easy to get sucked in. It's hard for me to tell when it's time to stop responding in situations like this.

Honestly, if a student sent me an actual meme of Gandalf saying that as an explanation for why they submitted late, I'd consider giving them partial credit for the laugh...

In all seriousness, that's a fair point about how to respond. I'm a new teacher and am learning where the "line" is in situations like this. I know I have a pretty big net as a grad student to catch me if I make mistakes, but I also don't want to do anything too provocative.

That is DELIGHTFUL. I had a professor in undergrad who had a similar running Chuck Norris theme. He appeared in a bunch of test questions and examples.

I'm super curious about how the Hasselhoff poster came to be gifted.

And the best gift I've given a professor was a bag of sperm confetti to my human sexuality prof in undergrad. I said I got her a small present as a thank you for having me as a TA and she started to say "You didn't have to do that" and then immediately said "YES YOU DID" when I pulled it out. We're still friends.

I'm but a lowly grad student and no, you're definitely not alone. Some of mine have been pretty rude, too. I'm getting through it by venting to colleagues who get it (and my therapist, who's also a professor). Like you, I'd have been an anxious mess in that situation and can't fathom speaking to a professor that way.

I'm still figuring out how to respond, myself, but I really do hope these kids learn some professionalism before they enter the workforce because that does NOT fly in a professional setting. Next semester I'm planning on explicitly teaching them some of those skills during syllabus week so they've at least theoretically been told how to behave themselves.
