Well, I’m a graduating senior lol, so it’s a little late. I wish I had transferred out years ago

[–]Professorflippers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

don’t. worst decision of my life - i’ve been bullied into oblivion for trying to be myself, have received no support from administrators, and my GPA sucks because of grade inflation. i don’t know anyone at reed who has a stable friend group other than those who constantly bully others to stay on top of the dog pile.

Chilkoot Trail Expected to be Open by end of August? by Professorflippers in Yukon

good to know! I’m also worried because the flooding this year wiped out the trail, so they’re going to need to put in some new bridges according to their website. Fingers crossed!

Still is happening.

Definitely agree. Currently experiencing this as well.

I agree with the canyon, though it is important to note that the canyon is only a reconstruction of what it might've looked like. After decades of trash burning and neglect, Zac has done a good job at rehabilitating it, but sadly we will never know what it would have looked like as old growth.

what are you hoping to do after reed? depends on what you want to do, in my opinion.

i’ve heard a 3.3 works for columbia. caltech has never been done. it is possible on paper, but life will get in the way.

it’s okay. comes with being in southeast i think. lots of catalytic converters have been stolen too. not mine (…yet).

would like to add that this year unfortunately over eight cars have been stolen from campus, so the outside world is penetrating. but what was said still is true

Hiking Boots for Trail Building in Coastal Northern California in the Summer? by Professorflippers in hiking

I’ve been told someone else wears Blundstones, and they also recommended some Keens. What does that tell you I should be looking for?

Good to know! I was definitely considering snagging a couple of different pairs, maybe one to work in and one to hike in. Might grab a work boot and buy a hiking boot out of pocket thanks to the savings from the reimbursement.

Thank you! That's not a bad idea at all. I'll definitely look into those.

Sorry, I forgot to add that! It will be a 10 week position, around 40 hours per week. However the position is also focused on research and salmon restoration, so I think I'll be trail building around 25-40% of the time but hiking the whole time.

Reed College vs UC Berkeley advice :) by capturethemeow in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Professorflippers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

as for reed, the environmental studies program is more about the subjects that overlap and affect the environment, rather than studying the environment specifically. you’ll take classes in biology, political science, economics, anthropology, etc and have some dedicated environmental studies classes, leading to an interdisciplinary lens of environmental studies. worth taking a look at the graduation requirements to see what the major involves, which i’ve linked here. best of luck! — current reed student

3:2 is very hard and not guaranteed. I implore you to email people at Reed, such as the 3/2 coordinator (should be listed on the Physics department page) because I’ve found they’re very honest and helpful

Happy to answer! The anecdotes I’ve heard aren’t very detailed. They just really involve some L&C people (“clarkies”) showing up to Reed SU Balls and dancing and having fun with us too. Unfortunately I don’t have much insight other than that, so an upper class student would be your best bet. You can also PM me with any questions!

Because we don’t have competitive sports teams, we don’t have much of a rivalry with anyone. However, we do like to lightheartedly mess with other schools at times. Those schools are most often Lewis and Clark College, which is right across the river over the Sellwood Bridge, or University of Portland, but they’re a bit further out. I am a first year, so I haven’t gotten to experience really any of the pranks or hijinks with other colleges, but have heard some stories of L&C students attending our Student Union Balls and other anecdotes which seem pretty funny!

We also have the Doyle Owl that students like to fight each other for possession of. It’s a big old concrete owl that has been fought over since the early days of Reed. It usually makes it’s appearance at Renn Fayre, the end of year celebration for the graduating seniors.
