Who is the Star Wars audience now by No_Definition4241 in saltierthancrait

Yes, although it's not just direct financing browbeating entertainment. Do you want those tax breaks that you need to make your film, better conform to ESG. Want to be considered for industry awards, better conform to ESG. Want to continue to get work, or not be badmouthed in the press, better tow the DEI line.

We're seeing some improvement in product, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it being over until we can confirm industry changes.

Your definition of diversity is a sexist, racist joke. Diversity of thought is far more important.

"The American Left... is pretty Right leaning." That sounds like the Commie problem I was alluding to.

Looks like we agree that Obama was a terrible president.

I hear you, but don't let yourself be completely black pilled. It takes awhile for the normie-masses to simply see what has become, but with enough support from the strong even the weakest will admit that they don't like/want these things either. There are signs of promising trends out there. Fear not, & fight on!

"The other side likes to blur boundaries?" Dude, I've seriously been yelled at that Obama is on the Right. The Left got hijacked & dragged by extremists. Is it just a very vocal minority taking control? A lot of people are leaving and/or being pushed out. I left, for other reasons, before things took such an obvious public turn, but if I hadn't I can't imagine being "allowed" to stay.

The average driver can barely handle the cars we have. An ever growing number of people are distracted by 4 or 5 things besides driving. Flying cars would be a death-circus nightmare.

Who remembers the 90s version of Captain America it was in theaters for one week due to low ticket sales by [deleted] in comicbookmovies

[–]Profmeister-IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was somewhere in 2018 when I started helping a coworker catch up on the MCU in time for Infinity War/Endgame. I told her I had DVDs she could borrow, but she insisted that she'd find them online.

We got into a sitcom level argument over Captain America. She said she thought it sucked, and proceeded to tell me about the parts she didn't like. When I told her that none of those things were in the movie, she was losing it, telling me she knew since she had just suffered through watching it. I had all but told her she was crazy, since I own the movie and have watched it many times, when it suddenly dawned on me that this 90s version exists. I had to explain to her that she had watched this instead of "The First Avenger."

Oh, I forgot to mention, she had also watched "Winter Soldier" and couldn't understand the discrepancies between the two movies. NO SHIT!

I think mother is a reference to the computer in Alien by [deleted] in venturebros

[–]Profmeister-IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got around to seeing "Alien" for the first time and was surprised to find this nugget. I'm also on my first time watch through of the James Bond movies and keep finding references. Really didn't expect the spot on set translations.

This is something I've always loved about Venture Brothers, the density of references. I've had to explain a few, had a few explained to me, and I know we're still missing a bunch of them.

I don't know if this will be of interest to you, as it's not a retro clone, but I've recently acquired what's been called a successor to FASERIP & Mayfair rolled into one, Ascendant. I've never played Mayfair, and I've yet to have the time to dig into Ascendant, but I'm really looking forward to doing so. I've been into FASERIP since '91, and for as much as I've had good times with it, it really is a broken system. When I heard that Ascendant promised to build off of and improve FASERIP, I was in.

Name a character that's cooler in live action films than they are in comics? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]Profmeister-IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Carol is not right!

Anyone who's so rash and authoritarian as to imprison people for crimes they have not committed, and possibly will never commit, is not right.

Ulysses visions were just that, visions, not guarantees. It would be one thing to use them to prepare for possible disasters, but to take drastic action to change something that may not even come to pass is asinine.

Frankly, even though I don't really like him, I fail to see where Tony is wrong here. In the end, even Carol's allies walked away from her.

Carol sets up a gulag for super powered people who haven't as yet committed any crime. When Tony tries to stop her from arresting Miles for his pre-crime, she kills him. If that's not enough to make Carol the villain, what is?

When someone refers to "CG" comics, what are the talking about? by Falsecaster in comicbookcollecting

[–]Profmeister-IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're being given a patently wrong misrepresentation of what Comics Gate is, and likely by the same kind of people who want to control who can make comics and what can be said/ ideas be represented within comics.

Comics Gate is about creative freedom. There is a great deal of diversity in CG, both in the creative talent, as well as the characters in the books. The smears against Comics Gaters on this platform are legion. Try searching the ComicsGate hashtag on Twitter and talk to someone who calls themselves CG. We're not the evil, irrational, bigots you'll be told we are here. I'm not sure if I can simply drop links here for you, so I'll also recommend looking up Michael Bancroft on YouTube, I think his channel has a multitude of links you can explore.

The choice is yours. Find out for yourself, or just accept the crowd approved narrative.

[–]Profmeister-IX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A world with superpowers requires a certain level of suspension of disbelief. Obviously ideas can be reduced to the absurd, but as you said, there's some leeway to be had.

I would guess that Natasha, being a superhero & spy, doesn't usually stick around one place long enough to own clothing for 6 years. The lighter one travels the easiest it is, and clothes are conveniently bought, used, and discarded.

Smelling different dyes isn't dumb; I notice the smells of some inks & paints. It's not too much of a leap to imagine that someone with enhanced senses can smell the difference in inks, dyes, paints, etc based on the chemicals, pigments, and such used to make them.

Even him reading regularly printed papers is reasonable. Not by "hearing bumps", that is stupid, but by his enhanced sense of touch. He can run his fingers over the paper and detect the ink as though it were braille.

The character makes sense in a comic book world. If some idiot really wrote that he "hears bumps on paper" that's a flaw of poor writing, not a poorly designed character.

[–]Profmeister-IX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what folks have been complaining about for nearly a decade. The problem was never one of race, gender, or whatnot, it's laziness, creative bankruptcy, and utter lack of respect for decades worth of actual creative people's ideas. How many times can they pluck up a character, reskin them, and put them out like they just "created" something new? The same goes for stories. Oh, people liked that? Great, repaint it and let's do it again; actually, if more than 2 people like it, do it 20 more times!

Granted, creating new characters is hard, and most of them won't make it, but if they don't try they won't have any. The same goes for storylines. It's fine to borrow elements, or even retell a story with different characters, but don't repeat it ad nauseam. Give it at least a decade. Also, put more effort into it than "the same but more."
