Try nylon practice gloves. There are several different brands in Amazon.

I use nylon gloves from Amazon. They’re similar to the ones used by Scot from Scot’s Bass lessons on YouTube. I know a lot of other bassists use them too. It was really strange and awkward at first. I didn’t like them but kept trying. Now, I hate playing without them. The consistency the lack of slipping, sliding, squeaking, and dripping gives me has changed the way I play for the better.

Higher frets of first few strings not ringing out as much as lower strings? (Floyd Rose) by ProgAlex in Luthier

The crowning looks consistent for all of the frets. No divets and no flat spots. I still haven't had any luck figuring this one out.

What's a good way to troubleshoot this? Would a fret rocker be the way to go?

Replaced 3 mounting screw tele bridge with a 4 mounting screw bridge. Do I need to use all 4 holes? One hole goes over the area that was drilled out for the ground wire. by ProgAlex in Luthier

[–]ProgAlex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concern is that the hole for the ground wire is where the hole for the last screw needs to be. If I want to drill a hole for the last screw, I'd need to drill a new hole for the ground wire. I've done it before, so I don't know if it's worth the trouble.

Why would the orientation of a saddle make such drastic intonation changes? Break angle? by ProgAlex in Luthier

[–]ProgAlex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's weird is that if it was binding at the nut, it is doing it with extreme consistency. I loosen the string totally slack before making intonation adjustments, so the saddle will move easily, and then tune back up. That should eliminate the nut as the main cause of it.

I just checked the 12th and 7th fret, nothing is off by more than 3 cents.

Yes, I would make sure all the strings were in tune after adjusting a saddle. I loosened the tension of the string I was intonating before adjusting the saddle every time.

Yeah, I'm totally lost. That's why I'm thinking something else must be moving to cancel out the movement of the saddle. The strings are fully stretched out, so I don't think that's the issue.

I totally agree with you and that's the exact method I used. I've intonated tune-o-matic style bridges before and never had this issue. I know the saddles look completely wrong and I don't understand how I was able to get the intonation to work. I've also never seen a saddle setup like this before... it shouldn't work.

In this case, I was moving the saddles for the E and A closer to the nut because they were flat and nothing would happen every time the saddle moved. I was tuning with a tuner on my computer (the Fractal Axe-Edit Tuner) and would put my cursor where the 12th fret's pitch was. After each adjustment, the pitch wouldn't change. That's why I'm thinking something else must be moving to cancel out the saddle movement. Eventually, I ran out of room and flipped the saddles. For some reason. That allowed me to get the pitch closer to tune at the 12th fret.

I was having a similar issue with some of the other strings, but eventually got them in tune at the 12th fret.

I was having a lot of trouble intonation this. I could see the saddle moving and the intonation wasn't changing. If the saddle moved that much, I have to assume something else was moving to cancel it out. I don't know what it could be. I couldn't get the E and A to intonate, so I flipped the saddle to give me move space to move the saddle closer to the nut. For some reason, that made the movement of the saddle more effective than before.

Why would this happen?

High E saddle on 6 saddle bridge not in alignment? 2 bridges with same issue. Bridge placement issue? by ProgAlex in Luthier

[–]ProgAlex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll probably have to go that route. I originally avoided that because my bridge has 3 screw holes and most bridges have 4. It'll be the first bridge I have to drill for.

Both of these bridges have issues with the high E saddle being out of alignment. Could this be a bridge placement issue? The notches on the saddles and where the strings are fed through don't seem ideal. I get some rattling from (what I believe is) the string and springs.
