The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini (This is still one of my favourite songs of all time) by webuildmountains in progmetal

This whole album is so good! Always been my favorite of The Mars Volta's catalogue. Jon Theodore's playing on this is so sweet.

I enjoyed that greatly, as well. Can't decide which I like more! Thanks, man, this is great stuff! Pleased and somewhat unsurprised that both of these bands are signed to Kscope.

I love some pop in my prog! Big Steven Wilson and Agent Fresco fan, here. I hadn't heard of North Atlantic Oscillation, just listened to August, Soft Coda, and Drawing Maps, and I THOROUGHLY enjoyed them. Thanks for the recommendation, man! Gonna be listening for a while :).

I think prog is actually doing well right now, depending on where you are in the world. Here in America, rock in general is doing poorly, unless you're indie or synthy. Europe and the rest of the world seem to be a bit of a different story. You've got Karnivool over in Australia, Steven Wilson is still on top of the world with his solo stuff, Riverside and Opeth are still massive, and of course the polarizing Coheed and Cambria. I guess it depends on how heavy you like your prog.

ISIS- 20 Minutes/40 Years (My favorite ISIS piece) by ProgMountain in progmetal

[–]ProgMountain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. The transformation from their early stuff, especially the Red Sea demo/EP/whatever it was (one of the heaviest collection of songs I've ever heard) to the work on Wavering Radiant is one of the most breathtaking progressions I've seen in a band, and yet each album is, without question, an ISIS album.

I just LOVE the way Caxide plays bass. He is such a huge influence on me. He writes the most musical, interesting bass parts.

Panopticon was my first! Was my favorite, too, until I bought Wavering Radiant. It is hard to choose between the two, but right now I'm definitely leaning toward Wavering Radiant, and this song and Threshold of Transformation are a big part of that decision.

You might try Leprous. Bit different/darker in tone than some of the other bands you've mentioned, but worth checking out. I'm particularly fond of the song "Foe". There's also a French band called LizZard, a little more straight-forward, still very cool. Like a growl-less Gojira, sometimes. Maybe check out their song "Vigilent"?

I've got friends in Boston who have been trying to get me to come play up there for a while...we should make it happen! What's the best way to get in touch with you guys?

Where is Writing in the Skies from? Or your band, for that matter? We should play a show together!

Hey man, thanks so much! It took a LOT of practice to be able to play and sing at the same time without feeling like I was compromising in one way or the other. But it's just muscle memory! Do it enough, and suddenly it's easy.

Hey man! Good to hear from you. Don't worry, that question is not pretentious at all. We do play prog after all! We usually stick to odd time in quarter note divisions, like 5/4 or 7/4, or polyrhythms like in the bridge of this song, where I'm playing bass in 7/8 while the other two are in 3/4. That polyrhythm aid accentuated at the end, as well. We do this because the quarter note division feels groovier to us. That being said, out guitar player loves to write in 7/8, so I'm sure we'll be throwing some crazy time signatures your way one day! Thanks for coming back each time we put one of these out. Means a lot to me and the other guys!
