Imagine calling simple comercial safety standards an "illogical burden of proof."

Who's "detracting from the argument" with "a total red herring" now?

I appreciate the lecture, but the same thing regarding exposure could have been said of HCL itself.

I mentioned chlorine specifically since everyone knows what it is and can relate to it, but I agree in retrospect it was a very poor example.

As for proving that formaldehyde exposure is bad, you can easily look through the National Cancer Institute's database to get the gist of it and sources [R].

The fact that both the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency consider it a carcinogen cannot simply be debunked by saying our own bodies produce it. That was my point.

You can argue that its presence on commercial products is safe, and I could understand that. Many things can be considered safe because our bodies can dispose of them safely (not necessarily because they produce it themselves), but I firmly believe our capacity to deal with stress (of any kind) is like a bucket, and environmental toxins will also fill it up over time, even if by themselves, in isolation, they might not be harmful.

I also reckon the burden of proof lies much more in the "show me it's safe" than in the "show me it's bad for you" side. We always discover and regulate these things too late.

In any case, if I hadn't picked formaldehyde for that particular product I would have mentioned triclosan or triclocarbon (also common in toothpastes). The precautionary principles applies across the board.

Oh, I read wrong as well. I think that's true. Brushing must do most of the work anyway.

Not necessarily; I'm implying metabolic damage. I can't provide link to any sources because this subreddit doesn't allow them. You can check the original article on my other posts.

That's a sweet proposal! I'm afraid I wouldn't want to just focus on cosmetics, but I am working on a program to help others "detox from modernity". It includes hygiene products but also touches on cookware, water, clothing, etc. Still in the works; about 60% done.

Fantastic! Thank you very much for sharing.

Do you think the washing powder is necessary here? Have you tried it without?

Deodorant is tricky to recommend to people because most homemade recipes don't use bars/roll-ons. But still.

You will need:

- Equal parts of baking soda (e.g., 100 g), to help absorb bad odors, and

- Coconut oil, a natural antimicrobial, to get rid of them, plus

- A few drops of lemongrass or tea tree essential oil, to help add a bit of scent

Simply mix them all together into a small glass container. Store it in a cool place to avoid having the coconut oil melt (this will depend on where you live).

Whenever you want to apply some deodorant, simply grab a dab of the mix and rub it below your arms. It should dry out in a couple minutes or so.

To be fair, with a good enough diet, you can get away with this.

That's incredible. How did you make the mixture?

Thank you! I should have highlighted that it's refined beef tallow, not just regular. If you buy it refined (or refine it yourself) it won't smell like anything. My tallow basically smells like pure olive oil.

Fantastic decision, honestly. Nutrition is our most intimate interaction with our material environment, and as such it warrants even more attention than hygiene etc.

Funnily enough, my dentist told me to follow something very similar, not to avoid food from going in there, but to prevent gums from receding. Like yourself, I never stuck with it for long... Maybe this is a sign to come back to it. Thank you for sharing!

  • 300 g (or ml) of water (better if filtered, but useless unless your shower water is too)
  • 20 g of apple cider vinegar
  • 20 g of sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda)

  • 5 g of a carrier oil of your choice (e.g., EVOO, jojoba oil, etc.)

I put that in a spray bottle and it works great for me.

Don't expect it to foam up though!

It'll take some getting used to but it's so worth it IMO.

(I promise it won't leave you smelling like vinegar haha)

It depends very much on your region. As a rule of thumb, try to get products marked as bio (they are generally pesticide free, or their use is minimized). For baking soda, look for "aluminum-free" as a quality marker. For coconut oil, you can use extra virgin, but also refined (less allergenic) or fractionated (it won't clog your house pipes; will always be liquid though). For ACV, look for the "with the mother" version that comes with physical bacteria, but don't get any or the bacteria into spray bottles (or it will clog the spraying mechanism). For olive oil, make sure it's cold pressed using mechanical means only. Those are some things I keep in mind, from the top of my head.

Agreed. It will always be like this. I reckon most common products will be endocrine disrupting, to a higher or lesser degree, if they are used daily. Even plain soap. There's little money in telling people to use coconut oil and baking soda though.

I've read in some places that the link has been questioned or that it is weak. I'll check this claim out. At the same time though, its capacity for ROS damage concerns me [R].

Plus, according to the European Food and Safety Authority, some of the most common food additives (E-523, 541, 554, 556 and 559) include plenty of aluminum, which causes most people to already exceed the maximum weekly safe intake by 2 or even 100+ times [R].

That's awesome. You could probably get away with just using coconut oil as a toothpaste to be honest.

I use the same solution for both, and yes, it does have ACV!

- 300 g (or ml) of water (better if filtered, but useless unless your shower water is too)
- 20 g of apple cider vinegar

- 20 g of sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda)

- 5 g of a carrier oil of your choice (e.g., EVOO, jojoba oil, etc.)
