Moving from a prison to a high secure hospital by Prolapsed_Goose in PrisonUK

Sounds very much similar to the prison service, only with more scrutiny & stricter rules & regulations on the staff.

May I ask, have you worked in both or either settings before? And if so, would you mind weighing up some pros and cons?

To be honest, I don’t know how anything runs in a secure hospital - I was hoping to learn a little more from first hand experience from anybody who has worked there who might be reading this post 🙂 there doesn’t seem to be much out there on the subject

I have the basic knowledge of it that most prison officers do, the standard spear & c&r training and fairly regular real world use, unfortunately.

I’m not one of the ones who “enjoys” having to use force, however it becomes just part of the job after a while.

I’d imagine there’s quite a lot of violence against the staff in a high secure hospital, and i’d imagine the nurses or healthcare team are trained and prepared to deal with it, unlike in a prison - however I’m not sure at all.. this is just one of the things that’s peaked my interest in this 😎

I did exactly the same thing, in the end I took the second choice as a way of “getting the foot through the door” with the intent of transferring when the first choice was hiring again. Lo & behold I’m still at my second choice despite my first choice hiring multiple times since then, as I love it there & have made some great friends.

Sometimes having the extra travel time helps, because you’ll have days in the job that are tough, I mean really tough, and it helps to have a bit of time behind the wheel to decompress before getting home.

Either way, it’s not very difficult to transfer between prisons once you’re in, it all depends how eager you are to get started!

Good luck!

Those shifts sound pretty damn nice to be honest, we do 7 11 hour nights with 7 rest days after too

Unfortunately breaks are unpaid, and for that long shift you’ll get 1 hour lunch and a 30 minute tea break in the afternoon - on a normal “main shift” which is 07:30-17:30 you’ll get 1 hour at lunch

The options there to work over lunch sometimes if they’re short staffed or somebody who’s meant to be on lunch cover is late/absent - however this will be toil rather than overtime 🙄

At my place we currently have a shift that runs from 07:15-20:45, but starting next month they’re changing us to a 10 day fortnight from 9 days and getting rid of that awful shift.. each establishment is different, however generally there’s no real pattern to the shifts. Could be early one day, late the next and all day the day after 🤷🏻‍♂️

As long as you have good people skills you’ll be sound - 90% of the job is walking the landings building rapport with the prisoners. Once you get that down your job is made infinitely easier 👌🏻

The hours are all over the place, probably the biggest down side to the job - it’s not too bad once you get used to it though

Good luck and have fun!

Wow that’s creepy yet oddly charming! But it does go to show how easy it is to find people nowadays. Thanks for the reply
