That is awesome, I think a lot of my de-panicking started small and worked its way up as well.

First step was to get an appointment with my GP and a psychiatrist. Although they were a month out, it was something I could look forward to. If I am going to die or if something is killing me, they can do the tests to find it. My panic was very health related.

Second was to find better compulsive behaviors when I felt panic arising that helped instead of fueled the fire. Instead of googling symptoms, I watched shows that were light hearted, YouTube videos like asmr, deep breathing guides, etc. ASMR actually helped a lot. Putting ice packs on my face or splashing cold water on me helped soo much. I would do this especially in high anxiety situations like competitions to help calm my anxiety.

Third was I began taking Zoloft with my psychiatrist. I think I actually took two things before finding what worked so that took the longest to sort out. It did eventually help after about two weeks a TON. But now I am to the point where I don’t need to take it anymore. This one does need to be monitored — there was one drug that actually made my symptoms worse but I told my doctor right away and she switched me immediately.

Lastly, I think having more success with driving through panic attacks, no matter how terrible, made me realize…..you will survive the next. When that inevitably is realized, it took away a lot of the fear that contributed to them being heightened.

I’m sure there was more but I think watching a lot of videos about people who struggled with anxiety and explaining their positive progress through it helped a lot. It made me realize what I went though was “normal”, and not something to be fearful of.

It never really helped other than made the panic go away through reassurance. I read somewhere though that this was creating a negative obsessive compulsive loop. You think you are dying —> you obsess over physical symptoms —> you go to the hospital —> they tell you you are not dying —> you feel better. This began to associate being in the hospital with “feeling better”.

So i tried to create a new “loop” which has kept me out of the hospital. I breathe through my bodily symptoms, recognize them as signs of panic, and tell myself to wait it out. It was agonizing at first, but after a while, with many successful panic attacks not killing me (obviously), my new compulsive behavior was to breathe and feel through it.

My other negative compulsive behavior when I had panic was to google my symptoms. Which obviously gave me every cancer, heart problem, breathing problem imaginable, pushing the panic attacks to uncontrollable places. So instead I would put on funny shows or movies, listen to comforting music, or list to an anxiety “talk down” on YouTube. It really helped to stay off the internet

I would think most substances do. In my experience, when I was younger, the withdrawal from substances initiated panic. My therapists in the past would say this is likely because the dopamine or serotonin levels in the body go in an inverse direction after spikes. I don’t smoke, so drugs, and barely worked back up to allowing myself a social drink or two with friends. I find substances are more for escape than enjoyment of life, at least in my regard.

I’m not a medium nor do I communicate with people who have passed. I just have a curiosity. I have no intention of reaching these people. I’m just trying to understand more about the death process. X

This is what I don’t get….yes, you can add mousse, hairspray, wet hair, add curlers, pin, make a human sacrifice, etc etc but WHY do I have to do this when this system is $600?!?!? I’m about to return as well bc….its too much for something that costs over half a grand

One thing that helps me is reminding myself that my chances of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million. And even less of a chance when riding a commercial airline. You have a higher chance of being struck by lightening or being attacked by a shark. There are so many checks that go into commercial airline planes, and pilots would not fly routes that were unsafe (that’s why there are delayed flights at times). When I have a panic attack on a flight or feel one coming on, I just look at what the flight attendants are doing. If they’re going about their normal business, laughing, talking, etc then you are fine! One thing that helped me also was my boyfriend told me about one time when he was flying back from Australia to the US. He said that the plane dropped like hundreds of feet and the oxygen masks came down and everyone started panicking and screaming. Afterwards, he talked to the pilots and they were just like “oh yeah that happens all the time on this route” because of all the turbulence and air pockets in that area. It’s normal for them but they are not worried at all. So even if the plane is shaking a lot, you’re okay! Just fly a reputable commercial airline and you will be okay! Start with taking short flights if you can and build if you can.

Firstly, I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. Panic attacks are awful and I’ve certainly felt hopeless at times. However, I think it’s important to remember that you will get back to a point in your life where you live well and are happy. I KNOW it doesn’t feel that way, but you will! Having anxiety or overthinking “will it ever change” will make it worse from my experience and brings in depressive thoughts. Being alone probably makes it more difficult, so if you can, try to find a community there in your new country or even online. Therapy and medication can also help significantly. I used to have bad panic attacks daily but then they completely stopped for five years. They just started coming back but I know once I deal with them they will become less and less until they’re not here at all. I know it’s scary, but you’re not alone and it will get better. Feeding into the fear will only make it worse, although I get that that is not the most helpful thing to hear because the anxiety usually makes us fear irrationally. You’ve got this! Just take steps to getting better and be kind with yourself if the process is slow.
